When you're talking about how it steers and handles, it's spot on for the CX-5. I had a new one as a rental for a few days and it doesn't drive like a typical CUV. The steering isn't lazy, throttle response is quick, and it handled quite well in the corners and curves. It isn't a sports car but Mazda really did a great job with the driving feel. It's also one of the few Japanese brand CUVs still made in Japan, which matters a lot because Japanese build quality and fit/finish is second to none.

As a CX5 owner, the 2.5 turbo is quieter than the normally aspirated 2.5. A lot of value for money with the CX5, and it’s a looker for an SUV.
@lajya01
@lajya01 11 ай бұрын
It's probably because the engine doesn't have to rev as high. Above 4k RPM, the power is dead in the turbo version compared to the NA. I still preferred having the turbo in my 2022 because there's no cylinder deactivation and that thing is above 2500lbs. The earlier CX5 were lighter and could do without it.

We test drove both CX-5 Turbo and the GV70. Two totally different vehicles. The Mazda is definitely more sporty and fun to drive. The Genesis is more for comfort and cruising. Both were very nice and it was a tough choice but we went with the Mazda for the driving experience vs the slightly extra comfort features and price. You just have to pick what matters most to you.

I’ll tell ya brother. I got a 2021 Cx30 turbo. And that centre dial instead of the touch screen? In my opinion is a god send. I’m very accustom to it now. It keeps the fingy prints off the screen number one ☝️, and it’s no much safer resting ones arm and, twisting the wrist to navigate through the entertainment screen. Far more focus on the road ahead with this system. I hope Mazda never gets rid of it! Since I suspect I’ll be a repeat buyer with Mazda. Cheers 🍻 brother! And thank you Lori. Outstanding 👍🏽 work!

I've got the 22' Turbo base model, so it doesn't have the 360 camera, nappa leather, or traffic jam assist(keeps you between the lanes rather than just letting you know when you're drifting). I prefer the base turbo over this for the following reasons; black rims and glossy black trim(which looks better IMO, especially with a 2-tone scheme like I have - metallic grey) - didn't like the dark brown leather and that's the only option(I prefer standard black) - didn't need the 360 camera(the reverse cam is good enough the vehicle is small enough to park without them), - last of all it's cheaper. A few things not mentioned here are the adaptive cruise control(might be on all new cars which could be why it wasn't mentioned, but it's awesome). The remote start via the app(which was high on my list since I live in the Northeast and winters are brutal, plus you can't get that on any new European car now due to their regulations), the app itself(even though it's not very great at the moment, but I assume will improve over time with software updates, etc.). It's Android Audio and Carplay compatible as well, just not wireless. It's got a heads up display which isn't essential but nice to have. The Bose system was mentioned but I'd like to note that it bumps! The subwoofer is hidden inside the spare tire which is also cool. All features aside, I bought it for the build quality and ride. You really need to drive one to see how good it feels. Having test driven other compact SUV brands on the market, nothing compares in this price range. I didn't drive the QV70, but that was above my price range(appears the base model is more than the top CX-5 trim).
@christianbryant5617

“You really need to drive one to see how good it feels..” exactly! When I got in and test drove it I was in awe with the driving dynamics of the CX-5. You become a piece of the car rather than the person operating it. The driving feel plus the interior quality and airy feel made me buy one immediately after test driving for the first time.

It’s kind of in the grey area. Definitely much nicer interior quality, noise insulation, and refinement than the Hyundai or RAV4 but not quite as nice as a GV70. I’d say it’s closer to the GV70 than a RAV4 though.

Hey Joe! You said that the CX-5 Signature does 0-60 in 6.7secs. I wonder if that's a mistake because my 2021 CX-5 Signature does 0-60 in 6secs (on premium)

That's not much difference when you consider the many factors. Altitude, very high heat, gas grade used, load in the car, etc.

Joe, please review and drive the 2022 Lexus IS 300 Rear Wheel Drive. This is a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine. Would you buy it over the 6 cylinder engine IS 300 All Wheel Drive??

In my country a Mazda with turbo engine is not available. We have a 2.0 l.litre Skyactive engine or a 2.5 l.litre Skyactive engine.

Between the sunroof, screen size, touchscreen, and overall material quality and tactile feedback...the genesis is more expensive but worth it. Also the design language is completely different . For value the cx5 is definitely on the money.

I have this signature turbo and 2 other vehicles with touch screens that use android auto. The Mazda UI does it better. Never have to balance finger around while I'm driving.

I understand Mazda is looking to transform to a premium/luxury brand. If they do, they need much more H.P.

When Mazdas and Genesis and other premium vehicles are in the sam conversation you know they're doing something right! This CX-5 is a stunner!!! I wish they offered some more interior colors an they'd make that infotainment system a touch screen altogether or even in combination with the control wheel. Great review as usual Joe and Lori and Steven!!! On throttle!!!

Comparison to base GV70 is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. GV70 is a more technically advanced, better looking and frankly more powerful vehicles with 300 horses produced by 2.5l turbo engine. Nothing wrong with Mazda. It is the most luxurious for it's class being from compact SUV segment. But even in 2022 it is still an entry level luxury SUV. I am a previous owner of Mazda CX 5 and a current owner of the newest generation of Acura RDX in A-Spec trim. And Mazda is frankly not quite there yet with Mazda CX5. It is not even near RDX and far away from GV70 even in the base. I would call RDX and GV70 leaders in the asian combustion engine luxury SUV segment at the moment even though I think both are produced in US. I bought Acura RDX because of reliability of the V-TEC engine over GV70. Otherwise GV70 is a leader in my opinion. Switching to Acura RDX from CX5 felt like a big upgrade for me in every way.

If I were to buy an SUV for some reason, it would be this or the cx-50. I like the seats in the cx-5 more than the 50. The genesis is beautiful, but they are getting horrible reliability reports, from electrical issues to braking system failures. I smell a genesis suv recall coming, unless they get it figured out soon. My 2017 mazda3 has taken a beating and kept on going. I lost my job during covid and couldn't get the oil changed (I am so far from mechanically inclined it's not even funny) and my partner drove it from Seattle to Milwaukee already 10,000 miles overdue for new oil. That car just kept on going. When I finally got it in to the dealership for its much needed service, the mechanic laughed when I told him it was nearly 20,000 miles overdue. He said that car could've gone another 20,000 miles before it started showing signs of actually needing a check up. Mazda has my vote of confidence for sure.
