I have tested both cars. The 50 is a really cool-looking, low-slung car with the right buttons (a la Subaru Outback) to make it feel outdoorsy - and while it's not a Jeep or Isuzu Trooper, it is pretty outdoorsy - but for my money, the CX5 intelligence, feature set, and suspension wins. Unless something really jumps out, I'm leaning toward a CX5.

Intelligence and feature set is the same for the most part. Trim for trim their options are very similar. CX-5 rear suspension is superior in everyday use but, the CX-50 has a more modern interior with panoramic roof, something that isn’t an option on a CX-5 trim. Both have the same engine/trans and they have the same performance numbers. CX-50 feels more stable in unidirectional changes and swift turns due to the lower stance. The CX-50 feels more comfortable driving around town cause it’s not as stiff.

I got the 5 yesterday. It will be driven on road like 95% of its life so that's where I want it tuned. We were actually looking at the 30 vs the 5, not the 50. The 5 handles much better. Stays flat when cornering yet still eats up pot holes nicely. The 30 was more cushy, a lot more body roll when you were casually driving than the 5. That kind of thing makes my wife seasick so that was the deal breaker. I was going in expecting the smaller 30 to have better handling and acceleration but the 5 blew me away. We also test drive a 5 with 50K miles on it and I think it handled better than the new one so that is something to look forward to.

I am on my 4th Mazda, starting with the CX3 hatchback, and now my 3rd CX5, which my wife picked out. Mazda is an innovative and reliable manufacturer. Their AWD handles snowy weather well, but it's best to pay attention and not become a tow truck driver's customer (as with any vehicle). I would not take it 4-wheeling, but I do take it fishing. I like a little technology, mostly for safety, but not a distraction. The visibility is great in the CX5. My attitude is to pay attention to the road and my driving. A fighter pilot friend told me years ago, look 1/2 - 3/4 mile ahead of you as you drive. Then if something happens in front of you, you have time to react. Your eyes will focus immediately on the hazard, compared to looking up from your dash and/or no farther than one car length ahead. Did I mention keeping your hands off your cell phone? These days I'm looking at the CX90, but not the PEHV or turbo. I prefer better gas mileage. My POV. I wish Mazda would build a small pickup truck using their amazing styling and engines. I think this is a bit of a missed opportunity for Mazda. They have the more street oriented CX5 so why not take the CX-50 a bit further to actually compete with the Subaru Wilderness line up? I would have used those as a benchmark - 9.2/9.5 " clearance and 20 degree + approach angles, comprehensive under-body protection. I have an Outback Wilderness and have taken it on some technical trails - it's very capable. I don't think the Mazda CX-50 would really compete outside of rougher dirt roads. But then that begs the question - how much more capability than the CX5 is this really providing? If you wanted additional off-road capability an Outback Wilderness is probably the better choice, as I really think the regular CX5 will do almost everything this would do.

@@stevep8773 This is actually a benefit. Torsion beams are inherently worse than multilink conceptually, but with a lot of R&D it is possible to tune a Torsion Beam so it feels nearly identical to multilink outside of extreme edge cases that you’d primarily only find on a race track with highspeed turns. By doing this, you get added benefits from Torsion Beams, they are mechanically simpler so its easier to maintain, its cheaper and quieter due to less parts. Torsion beams are also lighter because they don’t need a subframe. They also allow for more cargo room/AWD room since they take up less space. In terms of speed Torsion is still good. The Civic Type R had a Torsion Beam suspension. They said they went to Torsion Beam because it provides an improved rear roll rigidity saving extra weight by not needing an anti-roll bar. I personally don’t think its a coincidence that Toyota bought 5% of Mazda and agreed to a partnership right around the same time that Mazda released their patented Torsion Beam and Skyactiv high power/efficiency engines. Then all of a sudden the first car Mazda and Toyota produce as partners at the Alabama plant just happens to have a Torsion Beam suspension even though Toyota hasn’t used Torsion Beams for something like 25years. It just doesn’t make sense for Toyota to partner with a small company like Mazda and give their Hybrid technology to Mazda unless there is something valuable they wanted to learn from Mazda.

@@WARnTEA Well, I agree to a point but I think we can agree torsion beam is considered "cheap & cheerful". Good value for money and as we agree better packaging - esp for an EV. But no luxury car ever touted its torsion beam suspension and no one ever "upgraded" a model to TB. And if you look at this new "U" configuration, it appears the coils are doing a huge bend when they actuate. Obviously I trust the engineers, but the spring rates have to be weird as a result. Typically, a TB coil operates almost perfectly linearly and vertically. Testers have pointed out the CX-50 ride is not as good - despite them glossing over a lot (like the uglier exterior and interior) which means it must really be bad, I suspect. Just bought the CX-50 Preferred after leasing a CX-30 for a couple years. I love it. Been thinking about replacing the tires with the Wildpeak A/T's but still sitting on that. The 50 is certainly a step up from the 30 I previously drove.

Could you explain a bit how exactly? I've been looking for comparison vids between CX30 and CX50, couldn't find any. Thanks!
@ryanyomomma2 жыл бұрын
@@etme1000 It's probably because the 50 is better compared with the 5. For starters, the 50 is bigger, yet I don't feel like I sacrificed performance for weight. It's also built for more offroad terrains (but more like offroad-lite) and the potential for aftermarket accessories tailored to offroad is better for the 50 than the 30. Among other things, the ride is more comfortable, quieter, and the creature comforts are a step up from the 30 I had. As I assume that you know everyone's preferences are different, this is just my experience between both vehicles. I wanted more out of my Mazda and my lease for the 30 was almost up. The 50 has what I want so I bought it. Plain and simple.
@etme10002 жыл бұрын
@@ryanyomomma Cool, thanks! I assumed (from reviews) that the 50 is noisier than the 30. Of course, the proof is in the pudding - ie one needs to test drive both, which I have not. How did the driving experience compare - I also assumed that the 30, being closer to Mazda 3, than the 50, would feel better. For me, the pleasure of driving is what I like the most in the Mazdas - after all, that is their guiding philosophy, and you can feel it.

Unfortunately, the 2022 CX-5 Carbon Edition doesn't have the turbo option. In 2021, the CX-5 could be bought with a turbo for $32k. Now, you need to spend $38k to get a turbo on a 2022 CX-5. I actually bought a Cx-50 last week. I haven’t been able to do much off roady type things, but I’ve put 800 miles on it already. It’s comfortable on road trips, and I would love to go find some light trails and go drive down those.
@karenandrearamos72262 жыл бұрын
Last week and already 800 miles?! Damn 😂😂 how are you liking it, I’m thinking of getting one myself :)
@samthecarguy11432 жыл бұрын
@@karenandrearamos7226 yeah, 800 miles in a week and a day 😂. About 50 miles a day for work not including grocery runs, or runs to go see friends, and I took a weekend trip that put about 250-300 on it. I had a 19 CX-9 GT I traded in for it because the numbers worked out and the dealer didn’t mark it up at all, so with trade in, my cost went up only $60 a month. My other car is a 2007 FX45 and the Cx-50 to me feels somewhere between the CX-9 and FX45. Space wise, I’m getting used to the smaller crossover, but it’s the same size as my FX45 so it’s not too hard to get used to since I’ve road tripped the Infiniti in the past and been fine space wise. I love it personally. It does have a few hard plastics around the interior, but it’s not bad, they give it a more rugged type vehicle feel so to me they don’t bother me. It has this weird feel driving it where you feel like you’re driving a car and an suv at the same time, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in a crossover which adds to the fun for me 😂. The road my neighborhood is on is terrible with so many hard bumps, and the 50 feels good driving on it, it’s a rough ride on that road because of how bad it is, but it’s still comfortable on it. If you don’t mind a little rougher ride over a CX-5, and love the agressive style of the 50, I’d say it’s definitely something worth looking into. My friend/coworker says it reminds him of a Subaru Forrester. I’m curious to see how the Meridian does since that will be a little more off road based. mine is a Turbo Premium Plus, kind of like the one reviewed here, but in Poly Metal Grey with the black interior.

I have a 2022 Mazda3 Premium AWD (not turbo) and it’s a great car. I love the look and the amazing stereo. Sadly, my previous Mazda3 was much more fun to drive. I wish I had gotten a CX-5. I would’ve had to sacrifice most of the luxuries of the Premium trim Mazda3 for an equally priced CX-5 Select or Preferred, but it would have been so much better to drive. At least the grip of the AWD makes up for some of the ride quality and handling drawbacks inherent in the new Mazda3. Also, swap the tires. The OE ones are trash. DWS06 Plus was my choice and it was a dramatic improvement.
