Sons of Raj Kapoor few years back said that it was misplaced expectations of people due to which the film bombed very badly at the box office when it was released in 1970. From the name, 'Mera Naam Joker' appeared to be a comedy movie, but it turned out to have very serious and philosophical undertones. Manmohan Desai once had rightly said that a film maker should not budge from people's expectations (he was not talking about either Raj Kapoor or this movie; in fact, he was a shagird of Raj Kapoor). Desai said that a film maker should give people exactly what they expected when they bought the movie ticket. Giving his own example, Manmohan Desai said that when people come to see his movie, they expect a family entertainer, comedy, good music, melody, lost-and-found, and other formulas. Add action scenes to that - Desai movies like 'Naseeb', 'Coolie' had some very magical action scenes. Desai said that he delivers what people expect from him and this is the reason of thunderous success of his movies. Though Raj Kapoor achieved great financial success in 'Bobby' after that, sad that from 'Bobby', he turned from an artistic and aesthetic film maker into an exploitative one, who heavily relied on glamorous females and nudity to make his films hit. Raj Kapoor of 'Awaara' and 'Shri 420' was a different film maker. Watch these two movies again and realize what a great actor/ director/ producer he was.

Public soch rhi hai ye film flop kyu huyi,, ye film main Kapoor sahab ki tharak ki wajah se huyi, mai tab pune ke office kaam karta tha , collegues aur family ke saath ye movie dekhne gye the 4:30 hrs ki movie thi, upar se bina matlab ke sexy scenes daal rkhe the 1ghante kam ki jaa sakti thi, minu master wala pura illogical tha, uske baad ye tharki usko only saari la kar deta hai, itna erotic ho gya us jamane me ye saari wala sequence 20 min ho gya tha, public aur families jo U certificate ki wajah se andar thi woh bhi,, uncomfortable ho gyi aur 70percent theatre khali ho jaata tha,, aur uske baad us jamane me logo ke pass entertainment ke liye movies hi hoti logo ne family ke saath jaana chhorr diya single ladke aur kuch couples woh bade towns me movie dekhi
