"Rajamati" is one of the most popular Newari traditional ballad about an unsuccessful love quest. It dates from the early 19th century based on a true story. A movie of the same name and based on the story of the song was released in 1995.
The song in Nepal Bhasa also gained fame because it was played in London during the state visit of Nepalese Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana to England in 1850.
It was first recorded on gramophone disc by maestro Seturam Shrestha in Kolkata in 1908. Seturam (1891-1941) was a Nepalese musician, singer and composer. He was an important figure in the development of modern music in Nepal at the beginning of the 20th century, and has been hailed as an Ustad. In addition to songs of love, Seturam sang songs with messages of social reform.
