My grandfather fought during the battle, or battles of the Hürgten Forest. He was Private First Class in the 112th infantry regiment, he used to tell me that sometimes he remembered himself and his friends running through the forest praying that artillery wouldn’t hit them. Two of his friends died. He recalled how soldiers felt death left and right. He got hit by shrapnel and turned unconscious. He told me that when he worked up he saw the dismembered corpses of fellow soldiers. He did not got injured so he continued fighting with another platoon. At the end of the day, after the retreat, when he reunited with his platoon only him and 13 more men and captain were left. He remembered all the bodies at the forest and wondered how did he survived. Later during the war he got injured and was sent home. He couldn’t return because the war ended during his recovery.

My gramps fought the Americans in this battle. It was his 2nd to last major battle of a 6 year military career before he got captured during the bulge. Said the incompetence of the Americans during this battle was both astoundingly high and very uncharacteristic as he thought higher of them than just about any other side in the war.
@theclown23932 жыл бұрын
In my most humbled opinion, I think the American high command was hell bent on taking Hurtgen forest regardless of high cost of casualties which is why they kept sending waves upon waves of tanks and infantry which I do agree that it's out of characteristic of the Americans for making such a move that's something you would expect the Soviets to do.

The hurtgen forest cost the allies around 50,000 casualties and the Germans had a similar but slightly smaller amount of men lost, which is why the allied divisions were sent to the Ardennes for rest and re preparing their assault on Germany itself.

I heard a story of a pair of teens who stayed at all hallows evening (Allerseelenschlacht, 30.10.-05.11.1944) there. @@warfare11gaming thanks for answering! Sure there's a lot of legendary skirmishes from the bulge to reproduce. Too bad the A.I. doesn't always help. You did a siege of Bastogne video not so long ago and the Hellcats sucked, pardon me. Uncharacteristically ferocious for that theatre of operations. And America's Stalingrad or Iwo Jima of northwestern Europe, that forest battle was hellacious, terrifying, desperate, confusing & a waking nightmare to be involved in for both sides, yet more so for the Allied troops. I wonder how many experienced & hardened Eastern Front veterans that the Germans had amongst their ranks (such fighting men were unbeatable on a man for man basis, thankfully they were badly outnumbered)? Also, considering that they were going up against the best, most proficient & tenacious troops on planet Earth the American GIs largely held their own & acquitted themselves very well during that battle, terrible, costly & savage as it was (& depicted quite realistically above, in graphic, horrifying detail)!

Alright who's the wise guy to think an 88mm or 8cm flack anti aircraft gun would be the same thing as a towed 155mm field howitzer there's a huge difference between the two in terms of their shells flight paths and the type of flight trajectory they take to there targets AA guns shoot flat on straight like a Lazer to achieve the proper lead distance for hitting allied bomber's in coordinated salvos of 8 gun's per battery & supported by 6 quad barreled 40mm auto cannon's 3 37mm single barreled AA guns and several MG42's set up with inter-linked triggers for AA support role that's not field artillery it shoot's from fixed position out to extremely long ranges and can be used to walk fires forward or use it to create an Arty beaten zone around the objective to keep Wave's of hostile units tied down and unable to break through the wall of HE shrapnel and willy Pete white smoke on top of being shot at by small arms fire from multiple different directions or interlocking Fields of fire to cut down whatever try's crossing a point that they couldn't be allowed to get through. that scene of the 8cm flack's shooting like Arty is lame and it's strange that you used those with the multiple Arty that the Jerry's have in the game
