This helped me identify a rifle that has been in my families possession for at least 90 years. It sat behind a door in my parent's house for decades. It is identical.

that is a whole hell of a lot of work for someone who's never touched a reloading setup. As cool as the Beaumont is, I think it's gonna have to sit on that rack at cabelas for a while longer lmao.

Great video! I’ve had a lot of luck with the Lee .458 405gr cast bullet in my Beaumont, loading with a 45ACP bullet seat and taper crimp die. I’ve used 70gr of FFg in the past, but I think I’ll move to smokeless loads based on 45-70 trapdoor recipes from the old Lyman Cast Reloading book. I’ve bought 43 Beaumont and other brass from LGM on Gunbroker, he does fantastic work making all sorts of esoteric cases.

I use the Lee 340gr .45 bullet mold and they seem to hit point of aim. I know everyone likes the BP thing but, I prefer mild loads of smokeless. I am on the waiting list for C&H dies. They estimated 2 years. I still have a year to go. I did manage to get some Bertram cases from Huntingtons before they went out of business last September. I have some 32 ga brass shotshells put back to try when I get my die set.

@@rakumprojectsOh, I've been shooting mine using the Bertram cases I bought. I love it. I also have and shoot an 1874 Gras, a 71/84 Mauser, a couple of Swiss Vetterlis and more. As a reloader, I enjoy making this ammo and shooting the old guns. Thank you for your excellent videos and keep them coming.

Kudos! For most people, that rifle would be a wall hanger. It's awesome that you actually manufactured ammo for it. One thing I would like to see is a video on cleaning these old black powder cartridge rifles after firing them. I've done plenty of it with muzzle loaders, but a cartridge rifle would be a completely different method.

I had the same ejector problem (missing one). I eventually made one and it solved the issue of the spent case getting caught on the one under it in the magazine.

My Dutch/Ethiopean Beaumont just arrived from Royal Tiger Imports. Appearance wise, the rifle is a mess. It’s filthy and even had a stalk of straw in the bore. My first concern was the bore, which after some cleaning turned out to be a pleasant surprise. There is some pitting but the rifle should be quite shootable. I plan to take the bolt apart and all other removable parts and get them in the ultrasonic cleaner today or tomorrow. The stock will need lots of fine steel wool and linseed oil. New cases ARE available from Northern Shooters Supply in Australia and I plan to order some. I’m in the US so there’s a six week delay while they get an export permit but I bought .43 Spanish cases from these folks and the cases are really nice and the price was right.

Ah, a kindred spirit when it comes to jerry-rigging anything at hand to reload an old calibre. Ironically, my last project was trying to figure out brass and resizing for the 8x58mmRD round, one of the sets you used. It was only after CH4D had a short run of those dies that I was able to finally easily produce rounds for my Husqvarna Rolling Block rifle.

Great video. I wish I had seen this video when I started reloading this caliber. I have some information from original sources. The case length could vary from 50.5-51.5 mm. Therefore it is better to call the cartridge 11x51R. In 1875 another bullet, the Harsveldt bullet was introduced. Diameter 11.6mm = .457. Weight 25 gram = 385 grains. 5 gram Black powder. Cases can also be bought from Horneber Germany . They can also be formed from .470 NE. I was lucky because someone sold once fired cases!. Or from 32 gauge shotshell. I have Ch4d dies. I am not very satisfied with them because the seating die does not accept a .458 bullet.

In my experience, lighter bullets with the same powder charge will likely hit even lower than the heavier ones due to a flatter trajectory. More powder will raise POA some. Glad you were able to get this old, obscure rifle running!

The rifle have the barrel inside shape matching with the ammo shape ? If not, do you tryed yet to make a extra long cartridge with substantialy more powder than the normal lenghts For turn this rifle into a african hunt kind of rifle ? This is co0l when i finaly build my own rifle thr first thing i always imagine that i goin to do is to make my rifle a super caliber kind of rifle and at same time shot regular short normal power ammo
@rakumprojects

The chamber could be reamed to fit a longer cartridge but then you could be exceeding the pressure the action is designed to handle.

@@Vo_d_kontra_o_norMAL it's not just the metallurgy, it's also how the action locks. The way the Beaumont locks with just one locking lug at the midpoint of the bolt isn't sufficient for mostly smokeless powder cartridges.
