Krag Jorgensens were used by three countries. In today's milsurp market, US and Norwegian Krags can easily be shot due to the availability of .30/40 Krag and 6.5x55mm Swedish. Unfortunately, 8x58r for use in Danish Krags hasn't been made commercially since the 1960's. Brass also isn't available, however it can be converted from two very different parent cartridges. I show how to convert both of those, as well as discuss loading and shooting in a Danish M1889 Krag Jorgensen.
8x58r was also used by Sweden who converted a number of their Rolling Block rifles to fire the Danish cartridge in the 1890's. The converted brass can also be used in these rifles, however care must be taken during loading as Rolling Blocks operate at a much lower PSI than Krag Jorgensens.
For an in-depth article on the subject of original 8x58r loadings and the pressure difference between Krags and Rolling Blocks, please visit

That big of a resize would be easier if you did multiple annealing steps as well as multiple passes through the die.

In the 1980'ties I had app. 3700 pcs. original loaded Danish 8x58R cartridges, but no gun. I sold those cartridges in one lot, for US$ 0.40/pc.

The Swedish rollers in 8x58 are fine with modern loads. The Swedes case hardened the BP receivers to strengthen them for smokeless propellant.
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects 4 ай бұрын
They did re-harden the receiver during the conversion process, but it's still debatable if full power loads can be used with them.

They were strengthened to withstand the Swedish service load. The original service load is the benchmark. I load mine to 2000fps, & of course, the old girl isn't fire much. I have had no problems.

Good video. Bertram Brass in Australia still make 8 x58RD cases, expensive though. As you've said, annealing is vital before forming. 45-90 is good for length, the rims need to be reduced in diameter a little, same as 45-70 .45 basic brass is ideal. I have also re-sized and then fireformed 8 x 56R Hungarian cases from PPU, they are a little short, but they work well enough. You're advice on not using the data from Cartridges of the World is absolutely correct, they are far too 'hot', as is your advice on the load for the Swedish Rolling block, which is much softer than for the Krag.

A great video. I am surprised at how much you could change the shape of the cartridge without it deforming completely. I would think that once you have fired the cartridges a couple of times they will shape even better to your rifle so that blow by will be reduced

Using blackpowder 45-70 brass would solve the blow-by issues as the walls of the brass are ever so slightly thinner. Haven't looked for it in a few years so i dont know if they're even made anymore. I dont see why not but you know the China pandemic hit and all.

45-90 brass works quite well. Use a LEE shell holder as the process will destroy multiple RCBS holders. Ask me how I know? You can adjust the rim dia in a drill press w/file. No need to pussy foot around with multiple strokes - do it in one pass. I did a hundert and din't lose a case. Use Tempilaq indicator to tell you when to take the torch off of the brass, then drop it IMMEDIATELY into a pan of water. This is important.

Rakum, are you based in the USA? If you need assistance machining parts id be interested in partnering up with you for content. Ps you make want a 6 jaw or collet chuck for turning cases so you are less likely to crush them.

@moosesmachinery
@moosesmachinery 5 ай бұрын
@@rakumprojects you can bore a 5c emergency collet to hold each case or make a diy reamer fairly easily. But it would have to be a spiral one to work with the gaps from each leaf.

@@rakumprojects Well, I'm going to be honest enough to admit that I didn't fire my Husqvarna Rolling Block enough to seriously stress the 8x56MS brass to find out, so you could be justified with that concern. Each piece I used went two or so firings without issue but I was working with a relatively small sample size.
