Great job as always. I have been to 30 US State Capitol Buildings, and I have to agree that North Carolina's isn't very impressive, but it is definitely an excellent example of Greek Revival Architecture. While many other Greek Revival State Capitol Buildings have long since been torn down, I have to appreciate the decency of preserving it this well.

For a city as big as it is, I find the downtown to be quite lacking. It feels like a big suburb and you have to still drive everywhere. The Pour-house is a fun record store/music venue and there's some cool food joints, but it doesn't hold a candle to so many other cities of similar sizes around the US.

I agree, I was surprised to find nearby Durham much more urban and interesting than Raleigh. Downtown was quite disappointing and empty but walking around was enjoyable thanks to the interesting architecture. However it felt like I saw everything in one day while tiny Durham had so much more to explore.

Great video! Raleigh is easily one of the cities I really want to visit. My wife and I even considered moving there some day. I knew about the Research Triangle park, but didn’t know about the 40+ museums and historic features and its nickname the Smithsonian of the South. Also, 2.1 million people in the area is quite a number! I wonder if that even beats out the Charlotte metro? Hmmm…
@CityGeek Жыл бұрын
Thanks you!! Yeah I think it’s a great city. I don’t think the metro is as large as Charlottes but I’ll have to double check 😊
@MrRalboi919 Жыл бұрын
@@CityGeekNo the Charlotte Metro area has more people however just a few Years ago Charlotte Mecklenburg was bigger than Raleigh Wake, but now Raleigh Wake County is Larger in population if you just put the two Counties up with North Carolina two largest cities, we rub it in Charlotte's face every chance we get lol 😂
@northwolf Жыл бұрын
The Raleigh area is actually bigger than the Charlotte area. Wake County has a higher population than Mecklenburg County. The only reason they consider the Charlotte Metro to be bigger is due to the fact that they grab around 8 counties surrounding Mecklenburg to "officially" call that the "Charlotte Metro". Meanwhile, the "official" definition for the "Raleigh Metro" is only including about the equivalent of maybe two counties surrounding Wake County. If you took the 8 counties surrounding Wake County and counted that as the "Raleigh Metro", then the Raleigh Metro would be larger than the Charlotte Metro.

A piece of history that this video missed is that the state's early lawmakers had a favorite Tavern in the central part of the state while the colonial era government was coastal. Like other states during the revolutionary war, North Carolina's capital was moved inland partially to better defend it. When the lawmakers were deciding where to establish the new capital city, they deemed that it needed to be no more than 10 miles from Isaac Hunter's Tavern. Essentially, Raleigh is a city that was established based on the location of a bar. The site and relics of the tavern sit squarely in the modern city limits, fewer than 4 miles north of the capitol building.

I lived in Raleigh, but to me the skyline is lacking. When you compare to other boomtowns like Nashville or Austin, its not even in the same league. The natural science museum and the NC history museum are great! I didn't know its the second biggest globe though! To me the art museum is just okay, I live in Richmond and we have a much better art museum. I do like that they have the trails though.
@tysonmcjunkin708 Жыл бұрын
Yeah the skyline isn't super inspiring, but there are a lot of large projects in the works that will transform it in the next few years. Everything just takes so long to get off the ground here...

I live in the Raleigh area too. I don't care about skylines whatsoever. It's a superficial thing that really means nothing. Raleigh is a great city, and is consistently ranked one of the top 5 areas to live in the United States, as well as top 5 in fastest growing areas. If anything, having the population (or workers) crammed into a small area with high-rise buildings is actually a BAD thing, leading to increased traffic congestion and other problems.

Raleigh, the land of "Holier than you." Spent most of my life in the Raleigh area, no thanks. The city has this strange need to be upper class, upper crust. It doesn't rate it, but that's the attitude you have to adopt if you want to get along there. Backward? You will be amazed and horrified if you spend a few days there. It's the only place I know where people still throw around the "N" word on a casual basis. Places like RTP make it look like the area is on the cutting edge, but in truth it has to do with all the cheap labor available. It was a fairly cheap place to live but real estate prices are now out of control. Smithsonian of the South, museums, RTP a great marketing ploy. I'm going to go with backward. Of all the places I have lived, Raleigh would be at the bottom of the list to ever live there again.
@BryantBaudelaire4 ай бұрын
So true! I just sold my house in Raleigh and moved to the coast. I'm from Nashville which really is upper class and a world class city what Raleigh wants to be so bad but will never be. the amount of racism in Raleigh is unreal. the "Triangle" is much smaller than my city and they are trying to be something they are not. they thrive off of cheap labor and unfair labor practices. people here hip Raleigh up to be something its not when the truth is, Raleigh doesn't really have moneyed they people that live here fake it a lot. The people here are very low morality and rarely smile it's like they are miserable and want you to be as well. staying there 3 years, we see we made a huge mistake moving to Raleigh when there are much better cities to chose from. I literally didn't make a close friend until I was leaving Raleigh and that's how most of the people are. its the most boring hateful place I have ever lived in my life and glad I got out. a lot of companies have been pulling out of this area while other cities are thriving but no one wants to have that conversation. When I first moved here and tried to buy a house in the west side of the city, I would walk in and agents on duty wouldn't even say hi. They would yell out "we are charging Apple prices". So when Apple announced they are pausing building the campus here was my big slice of humble pie I served to the area on how they have treated me and others like me in Raleigh. its been a domino effect and you will see there is more to come. Karma is a you know what!
@user-ms4ef8xz9t4 ай бұрын
@@BryantBaudelaire You hit the nail on the head with trying to be something they are not and faking it. Racism, oh yea. NC was once known as the "Rip Van Winkle State" because they were always 20 years behind everybody else. I don't think that has changed.
