I use a BSA 20 as a daily shopping bike, olive green, converted to trigger and a bigger back cog for easier pedaling, it's a 1974 and great to mooch around on,the step through frame is something you appreciate as you get older, good film, best regards.

You are at your best when working on/refurbishing these old bikes. Many good tips and tricks, with a bit of history mixed in. Feel as if I'm in my favorite class with a favorite professor. Pleased do more of these; completely enjoyable. Greetings from the States!

Just my cup of tea! Today I crossed the Pennine's to collect SEVEN shopper types I bought on ebay, unseen. 1 Raleigh 'Shopper', (identical to your bronze example) 1 BSA 'Twenty', 1 Triumph '20', 2 junior Dawes KP18's, and a couple of other Raleigh 'compacts'. Not a folder among them. All are fitted with SA 3 speed hubs, the 'Shopper' has a rear dyno-hub as a bonus. All in surprisingly good condition, only the tyres a bit iffy. I only wanted the 'Shopper' but the vendor wouldn't split them up. I got the lot for what I was happy to pay for that one. So I've got more than enough spares to last anyone a lifetime, far more than I need or have room for. Next job is to build a single wheel shopping trailer.

I did a non-folding Triumph 20 "clone" rebuild last year. It started in far worse condition than this 20- for one thing I literally pulled it out of a skip after it had lived outside in a lady's back garden for a decade or so. Upgraded from single speed to 3 speed and a full repaint (which it needed). It showed me how tough these old shopper bikes from 1960s/70s are.

Another enjoyable tinkering session, perhaps a little more in depth than a "light tidy"! I was lucky enough to pick one of these up last year and have been clocking up the miles since. It is fairly standard, with new cables and tyres. The Raleigh Record whitewalls seem reasonable across a variety of surfaces. I have to admit to sneaking in a little over the recommended pressure to good effect (especially on the road). The grip shifter survived in good order, but was changed over to a trigger type for personal preference. Always find the grip a little narrow on those. To achieve a comfortable position, I have changed the stem, bars and seat post for longer ones. All easily swapped back to stock if I ever move the bike on (very unlikely!). This has proved a great machine that fits in my little car easily, rides well and takes a decent sized rack top bag on the rear carrier. Definitely recommend one of these if someone needs a sturdy folder that doesn't cost the earth. Will look forward to a Raleigh twenty special! Best wishes and happy pedaling

Good to see you do these. I refurbished the pink/purple version of this for my mum last year. It was a surprisingly difficult project but it looked good when finished. Have a darker green version myself that I should take out this summer 👍🏼

You can adjust the two nuts on the folding hinge lever so it’s tight when pointing forward. Looks neater and you won’t catch it when stepping through.

The problem with the rear brake cable coming in from underneath is that it soon fills up with water and seizes up with rust. I've tried those concertina things with limited success. I'm guessing whoever fitted the top feed cable got fed up with this problem. Thanks for the video.

Put a blob of thick grease round it to help stop water ingress with the cable from the bottom.
