There's something alluring about these smaller, independent distilleries. I've been a fan of Glengoyne for many years. I really respect Malt Master John Glass and his team and what they're achieving over there. Also check out Glengoyne's sister distillery, Tamdhu. Glengoyne used to publish a cask recipe sheet on their website, but, they removed it a year or so ago. The sheet states that the 18-year-old cask recipe (at least, at the time this sheet was published) is: 35% First Fill European Oak Sherry; 15% First Fill American Oak Sherry; 50% Oak refill casks.

Hi Ralfy, Thanks for this short but excellent review. Let's hope that some executive people at the Glengoyne distillery listen to you and give the 18 year old 46 percent without chill-filtration and a smaller box. The actual box is to big and wastes to much paper. Safe on the packaging and give us 46 percent. We malt mates deserve this. Cheers from Germany and keep on rocking

Good advice on the road. If I recall they also bottle the 21 at 43. I know they bump up the 25 to 48. Why they don't do the 18 and 21 at 46 boggles the mind. Especially, as you point out, since they go for the over the top packaging instead.
@MrChristopherMolloy2 жыл бұрын
Fantastic point about the sacrifice of ABV for an overly-large & ornate box. Everyone should keep in mind that virtually all American whiskies are shipped & sold without a box; so they would seem to be entirely unnecessary. Glengoyne 10 and 12 are still decent values, particularly the 10 which is one of my favorites under $40, but where I am, older bottlings are much more scarce than they were 3-4 years ago, and MUCH more expensive if you can find them.
@alancats2 жыл бұрын
The older Glengoyne packaging featured the 18-year-old in a standard canister tube. Only 21-year-old and older expressions were packaged in a larger, more ornate box. I think Glengoyne's marketing team decided to package the 18-year-old in a box instead of a canister when they revamped the packaging about a year ago.

Prob should as everywhere else it’s already $140 and above. Crazy times. Btw if you’re going to pay $140 for the 18, go for the Tamdhu 15 instead. Better in my opinion. It goes anywhere between $90-140. If you can find them.

I love that term: "Location Exploitation". I haven't noticed it so much in Scottish distilleries as I don't buy the regular product line up when I visit, but concentrate on the distillery exclusive releases and branded products, which you can't get anywhere else. As for the regular product line up, despite the argument that they ought to be cheaper at the distillery due to zero shipping costs, that's not actually true as almost all single malt distilleries do not bottle on-sight, so they have to order their own stock to be shipped in. One case in point. The last time I visited Oban distillery, they complained that Diageo had not re-supplied them for ages (due to lorry driver shortages) and indeed their shelves were almost empty. The other issue is the pressure to sell at their official RRP even though the parent company offers bulk discounts to all the spirits chain stores, which means that in most cases, you can buy that bottle of standard 12 Year Old cheaper at the spirits shop across the road from the distillery. *Israel Wineries* Having said all this, it continues to infuriate me that there are wineries here in Israel, such as Ramot Naftali winery , Golan Heights winery, and Dalton Winery (but they aren't the only ones), which practice the most ludicrous "Location Exploitation" and mark up their own wines, because they happen to be in the tourist holiday region of the Golan/Upper Galil so think they can charge tourist prices for their own products. Despite the great tours, I refuse to go there anymore. Right next door Dalton winery , is the lesser known "Adir" winery which does not do tours but their wines are far superior to Dalton's, in my opinion and their prices are lower than the stores. There are a number of excellent Boutique wineries like Gush Etzion, Pesagot, Gevaot, Shilo, Toura and others, which do excellent tours and prices are comparable to wine stores. *Israeli Distilleries* Despite Golani (Golan Heights) Distillery being in the heart of the touristy holiday Golan region, their prices are often cheaper than the stores, as well as selling Distillery exclusives like small single cask bottlings. They also do the most amazing tours. Likewise, Milk and Honey distillery, near the Hi-Tech area of Tel Aviv, do great tours and prices are always cheaper than the stores.

Greeting from down under Mr Ralfy, really appreciate these reviews, you have become my whisky university and I am really enjoying it. My local bottle shop has offered me a job since I always stand there in front of the whisky cabinets and talk to customers who are not sure what to buy 😆😆 Glengoyne is one of my favourites, I have 10, 12 and cast strength but never had the 18 year old one and don't think if I can buy it any time soon. I have already spent couple of hundreds this month on whisky and my partner has forbidden me from buying anymore for the next few weeks. Please forgive me but I bought Glen Grant 15 year old and I think I was lucky and didn't really taste that burnt taste you mentioned in its review. Also bought a Glenfiddich 23 year old but hasn't opened it yet, along with a few other usual ones such as Glenlivet 12, funder reserve and Glenfiddich 12 because existing bottles were reached the panic line. Take care and cheers.

Don't often disagree with the great man, but he isn't correct about maturation being in the Lowlands so its a Lowlands. If that was the case Talisker, Lagavulin, Oban, Caol ila and most of the other Diageo Distilleries would be classed as Lowlanders. Nearly all of their production is immediately tankered down to Blackgrange (Alloa), Leven (Fife) or Renfrew (Glasgowish), to be filled and matured. It also doesn't make commercial sense to mature everything on one site, just in case of fire or some other major incident, you would be at risk of losing all your portfolio. Plus the transport cost of shipping casks to and from Skye and Islay is prohibitive. Glengoyne's' big issue I think is that they struggle to keep up with demand, so can only sell a limited amount to keep the stocks good for the older releases such as the 18, therefor they up the prices, because we still buy them. I do agree though, it should be 46% and ucf, but I'm sure that will come.

Yep, I was going to make the same point. I am not sure how serious Ralfy was being here as he does describe Caol Ila and Lagavulin as Islay Single Malts, Clynelish as Northern Highlands and Talisker as as islands, etc. Moreover, what would he do with the fact that, for instance, some Clynelish casks are kept in the the warehouses at the distillery whereas other (the majority) of Clynelish spirit is matured down in Perth in the Lowlands. Sure, I am a great fan of Estate distilleries where the product uses (at least partially) local barley, is malted (at least partially) on site, distilled, matured and even bottled on site, but at the end of the day, the region designation should, in my opinion be where the spirit is made, after all, the term Single Malt refers to the single distillery where it was distilled, not where it was matured.

Glengoyne used to be my favourite distillery. Still very good but the price increase (this has gone up 25-30 quid in the last couple years alone!) is not commensurate with the liquid anymore. I’m simply not paying £110+ for a 43 percent bottle. @@roryalexa Eh I would wager that most consumers who buy whisky wouldn't understand how ABV affects flavour though. A lot of people think 40% is high already and 43% may be the highest ABV threshold they can take. I've seen uneducated "observers" scoff at 46% let alone anything above 50%. Not the producer's fault but they are a business who caters to what the majority of their consumers demand. I think it's changing though. There's a lot more bottlings at 46% today than there was say 10+ years ago.

Regarding Glengoyne's practice of bottling @ 43% rather than 46% (even their 10 is bottled @ 43% here in the USA), I know the consensus here is that any malt being marketed as Premium or Artisanal should minimally be bottled at 46%, but I have met those that prefer whiskies bottled at Minimum Strength, and I wonder if Glengoyne, and others, simply think their whiskies taste better straight out of the bottle @ 43%? In the case of Glengoyne, my gut says no, and that if they're being honest, it's nothing more than the penny-pinchers in management trying to squeeze a bit more, but not every last cent of profit out of their operation.

I have no idea why they went from the previous tube to that huge box. As you said, they should have allocated the extra money spent on packaging to increase the ABV and simply rebrand the tube.
@roryalexa2 жыл бұрын
Their reasoning for ditching the tubes is that it was harder to recycle due to the tin at the bottom of the tube. Cardboard only is easier to recycle. Love this distillery as they make beautiful Whisky BUT, 48% NCF on everything above the 10 (and that should be 43%) would benefit it so much. Right now the 18 and 21 are positioned to be an expensive gift alternative to Johnny Walker Blue but it's such a waste to those of us who are buying it for the liquid in the bottle and not as an ostentatiously presented present to be given as a luxury item not a great Whisky.

I'll preface this by saying Ralfy is by far my favorite whisky reviewer, and I find his videos and ratings spot on most of the time. However, his accompanying review of Glengoyne 18 leaves me a tad gutted, and here's why. It seems very personal and picky, especially when he states that with less packaging, 3% more ABV, and a bottle statement on chill filtering it would rate a 90 at least. Come again? I get that 43% is a tad underwhelming nowadays especially for an expensive expression, but between that and the label and the excessive packaging the whisky gets docked 5 points? It almost sounds like a Ralfy review of Bowmore (hee). It also sounds like Ralfy suggested changes to Robbie and the gang at Glengoyne and they held fast (corporate decision?) It's not the 85 that burns me as much as the insistence that packaging, labeling and ABV create that much more added value in his review. The financial tradeoff between the hideously excessive box and ABV also leaves me puzzled as I doubt one has any impact on the other. Oh well, still love Ralfy.

On another note Ralfy, in a recent episode you reviewed a whisky (can't remember which) which specifically stated on the label "no added colour"...that stuck out to me, as it rings a degree more integral than the usual "natural colour", which depending on the level of personal integrity may provide wiggle room, since all whiskies (perhaps debatable) contain natural colour. It is in fact the added artificial colour which is the nuisance. I'd actually had this thought before, wondering how far the term 'natural colour' could be stretched, but that recent labeling brought it back to me. Cheers!

Think pretty highly of themselves don't they?

Those way oversized, ostentatious boxes are a big turn off; wasteful, unnecessary and patronizing. Sad to see Glengoyne, a malt I enjoy, is going this route.

Personally I'd be happy to see Ralfy abandon his no NAS policy and replace it with a rule not to review anything under 46% ABV.
