I appreciate a good, solid, cardboard tube, because that's how I store my Scotch bottles on my mini-bar. Reason being is that my mini-bar receives a laser-beam of direct sunlight in the later afternoon. The exceptions are my Glenfarclas bottles, which are dark tinted glass. Eventually, I'll buy a proper liquor cabinet with doors.

The last two Springbanks that I bought, a 10 YO and a 12 YO CS had no box. I like that they've gone from a minimal box to none at all. James Eadie is boxless, and I see that you can opt out of getting a box at Nc'Nean distillery's shop and save £2. The extra packaging of boxes and tins is not necessary...in my opinion.

Absolutely on your side. I see a lot of highly priced bottlings like especially Glenmorangie with their Signet doing way bigger than they need to be. They care more about the shiny box than about the content of the bottle. Which results in boxes too big for my shelves which are fitted for standard sizes. A tube is perfectly fine.

Thanks Ralfy, that put a smile on my face. That box is borderline ridiculous, but I do like a half-decent box generally, as I tend to keep individual bottles for several or even many years, so it helps to keep the sunlight off and protect against breakages. @KMMHL20122 жыл бұрын
You're entirely right Ralfy. The problem in my perspective is, the brands need to stand out on the shelf, not for people who know about whisky, but rather for the uninformed buyers, who rely on the visual appeal of the box and the fancy marketing department wording to attract buyers. I would buy a Glengoyne 18 if it was stuffed in a sock and put on a shelf in a dark corner. The occasional buyers would look at that and associate it with a lack of quality. We've seen this throughout the industry, fancy marketing wording, E150, packaging, etc... just to give the indication of quality vs. the actual quality of the spirit.

Packaging has almost become commercially more important to the powers at be than what is inside for many products including whisky and oversized packaging in particular has become fashionable to big industry think tanks. I remember meeting the famous Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan in the 1970's during my University years in Montreal and his iconic The Medium Is the Massage. This relates directly to how advertising particularly appealing to the "sensorium" positively affects sales and interest in a product. I'm for what's on the inside of the box.

Ralfy, great review, an instant classic! I was thinking at the beginning of this video that you should stomp the box, and you did! I agree completely with your opinion that we consumers don’t need or want the fancy box. We buy the whisky to open and drink. The box gets “tossed”. I recycle the paper product boxes, but I wonder how many boxes end up in the landfill. Such a waste. Keep these reviews and extras coming.

Couldn't agree more Ralfy. I find it nonsense that some big, online retailers (who's name's I won't mention) wrap your bottle in bubble wrap (fair enough), then put it into a box along with the broken down packaging that it came in from the distillery. I don't want/need that packaging. I underatand that it's designed to be eye-catching and built to be "protective" for the bottle but...if these retailers don't feel it's necessary for their transit...then why is it necessary at all? As you said...put the money into tbe presentation! And I don"t mean how the packaging "reflects the sheer intrinsic quality (or some such crap)" of the bottling!!
@pinkwaferlover2 жыл бұрын
I agree except in the case of gifts. For example you can buy a bottle of Arran 10 as a gift pack with 2 glasses. I received it as you described and I was able to assemble it for perfect presentation. I'd buy direct if I could save money and didn't want the presentation packaging.

Exactly this. I bought two bottles of Tamdhu from John Lewis, and it came in a HUGE box with layers and layers of bubble wrap. The box was big enough for 18 bottles. 18!!! I can get Old Forrester 1920 for a couple dollars cheaper than Booker's Bourbon. both are decent value, and excellent bourbons, but I generally choose OF because I don't have the box of wood ànd plastic to dispose of afterwards. Do I just toss it in the trash? It isn't recycleble. Stove kindling? Less boxes, more tasty affordable whiskies. But people do see value in packaging, and I know some people like the theatre of a fancy box, so I'm glad to hear you continuing to support distilleries like Spring Bank that spend less on marketing/packaging, and more on community and integrity statement bottlings. Love your 'rants' Ralfy, you'll get no arguments from me.

Just recently figured out that I can use the empty bottles for storing condiments and it looks kinda cool too. The boxes are pretty useless I think (later edit: not useless because probably the point is to keep the whisky away from light), not much use except for storing socks maybe. (joking) I seen someone cut the round ones short and make smaller containers. About the Ardbeg warehouse box, I have one and always wondered why the G is a different font from the rest. Maybe production mistake. They should've just used the font from the label in my opinion. I like good packaging design. I like what Bruichladdie is doing with their box/label/bottle design. I have 3 Arran boxes side by side atm and the height of the graphic elements are different on all of them. It's not a big deal, but it's also something you can easily fix. Hampden rum is my favorite bottle/box design to date.

I like some packaging for protection. I don't mind a naked bottle, a slight preference. And if we're honest, if it's a present, it is added value. A cardboard tube protects the bottle nicely and is the minimum amount of material since it's roughly bottle shaped. Or just wrap it in paper like Osmin's Apothicaire armagnac. That would stand out if you're the first to do it.

I agree that it is important to note that regardless of whether it's recycled or not, these oversized pretentious boxes still require energy and cause waste in their production. The "made from recycled" claim is often used by companies to 'greenwash' their reputations despite them doing more for the environment if they just don't do the problematic thing in the first place. I agree with the others that Springbank's bargain basement super thin boxes are all you need, although I do find they can become a little too 'efficient' - the Bladnoch 10 box I had could never contain the weight of such a heavy bottle! I also agree that Glengoyne, amongst supermarket malt brands above all, is screaming out for full craft presentation. It's a small distillery so can manage its stock much more effectively in this way.

I don't know - in most cases now, if as much thought and care went into the whisky as went into the packaging, whisky would be in much better shape. It's the expertise of the packaging and marketing people which has allowed the performance of whisky producers to slip, not the other way around. Is the "over packaging" a distraction? Sure, but the real question is why is it seen as a necessary distraction? It's true, we can talk about how some overpackaging isn't helping the planet or saving the whales (yet many other things also fail to do that), but I have to say that the packaging people often DO accomplish their jobs well, at least in this respect: they encourage, rather than discourage, consumers to buy the product in question at the prices being asked. If the people actually making the whisky did THEIR jobs half as well today in that respect, I'd have far less to complain about as a customer. Sure, packaging could absolutely be better, but it ISN'T the place I would start in reforming the whisky industry. Am I overpaying on packaging? Sure, but it's the least of my value worries in whisky these days. Given recent trends, I have very little faith that the corners cut on ANY aspect of whisky production today is being passed on to me in the form of lower prices or better products, or ever will. Something else we need is a video clarifying exactly what the role of the SWA is, and isn't, in the world of scotch whisky (and beyond).

Hello Ralphy and all. I like whisky but as a peasant :) my experiences are limited, though I am trying to expand them. I was put off whisky for 15 years as when I was 18 I tried Jack Daniels and not being a big drinker ever I hated the stuff and never went near "whisky" again and stuck to what I knew which was Aspells cider from the tap at the local ye olde pub. Which is a curious drink that works from the feet upwards over the course of about 3 pints. In any case, an old friend dragged a bottle out 3 years ago on new years eve, of "monkey fist" and a couple of what I thought at the time were comedically oversized globular glasses, in any case I expected to hate it but it was wildly different and delicious. Then I found the next I tried of a different brand was wildly different to that. Then I discovered that the brands themselves subtly change with each batch as well and as you can see we are off to the races as I finally found an alcohol that I can drink with some frequency because I actually enjoy it. I don't drink to get drunk, never have though in company a little wobbly never hurt :) and oddly I have quite a high tolerance and a pristine liver so its been a perfect match for me coming up to 40 lol. I've narrowed what flavor's I like and don't by trying all the usuals from the shop shelf over the last 36 months. I found my favorite blended regular tipple so far is White and McKay, and I found a single malt I could afford that was very pleasant, I expected it to be awful given it was from Lidl, their speyside single malt, the light sweet one, red tube,, I've found lighter whisky's tend to be more my preference than dark and old oaky wood with a hint of disinfectant and perfume AKA Bells. I am going to up my game a bit and spend up to £30 on my next and if you or anyone have a suggestion given my preferences for lighter whiskies then I would welcome a point in the right direction. And I am going to save and treat myself to something in the £50 to £70 range for my 40th birthday in May if any have ideas :o) Also, on that packaging, to me as just a regular guy with yeah a tiny bit more knowledge than avg but certainly not enough, that packaging simply says to me "I am not for you, only for the middle classes" and I would not even look twice unless it had an X % OFF sticker slapped on it, as the fancy box would instantly say I am going to be paying a healthy price where as if it were just the bottle on the shelf well I would have paid more attention to it and who knows maybe sprang for it in such a situation regardless of offers. I am a working class person as are the majority of the planets population, and to me the box is pretentious incarnate. Many thanks for your time and wisdom all.

This Ralfy's opinion correspondence to the earliest opinion about price of the place on the shelf in markets and so on... big package no place for opponents on this same shelf :) Could be some official gift box for each whisky, if you want you are buying only bottle with content, if you need / want to give somebody good whisky with exact proper glass you should have opportunity to choose, this is only my opinion ;)
@robfut99542 жыл бұрын
I think you’re onto the point. Distillers view these whiskies as one or twice in a life gift whiskies. Everything being equal what does it matter “wasting” a bit of paper on what is essentially gift wrapping to make somebody receiving it just a little bit happier. Remember, not everyone understands whisky and presentation matters sometimes. People get too angry over too little, if you can afford $200 on a bottle does $2 extra for packaging actually matter to you?

The thing is, that this huge box takes up a lot more space on the retail shelf than a usual box or tube, thus the retailer is forced to create more space if he wants to sell this bottle, or remove other bottles. And of course, a big box is simply more eye-catching, it's a pure marketing decision in every way possible.

I’ve bought $16 bottles of olive oil that have ornate bottles. And I’ve bought children’s toys for $20 that came in extremely ornate boxes. Did that add a lot of cost to the product, or was that just marketing dollars that would have been spent on Google ads instead put into packaging? Personally I think it’s money that would have been spent either way and didn’t affect the MSRP hardly at all. The hippie dippie environmental aspect doesn’t bother me frankly. How many expensive bottles will I buy in an entire lifetime? Maybe a dozen? Is that REALLY harming anyone?

I hope it never happens to anybody, but I always wonder what somebody would do if they had a few beers with their friends around about Xmas time, then they all realize that they probably won't see each other again for a while, so they decide to celebrate by opening that bottle of 18 yr old and having a few drams before the holidays over. They get box, put it on the table, realized that it won't open the normal way, and bing bang boom, the bottle is broken and the 18yr is all over the floor, all because the box opened in some way that a person couldn't navigate while toasted. What do you do? ask for a refund? Do you take the box back to the store and show how this cardboard mechanism confused you while you were a little tipsy? Cross your fingers and hope the guy at the store says: "You're the third person with a box-complaint this week." Only to have the same guy state: "No, there's no refund. However, we do sell a small booklet with instructions on how to open a box."

The old bottling of this 18 had the much more upscale looking label on the bottle and came in a tube that also looked very good but was not ridiculously oversized. Funny how Glengoyne ditched the tube with it's metal end caps but went for the overboard box.

The marketing team have to justify their existence.

Backwards step for Glengoyne and adding cost to the product we don't need. For me, boxes are irrelevant and go in recycling bin. I would rather do without box and pay less or get added product value with %ABV etc. Be like NcNean and offer boxless version .... that's environmentally friendly. Many retailers by courier take bottles out the box ( flatpack it) anyway to bubble/ air pack etc

The box I go out in won't be as elaborate as that!

Some of us even throw the boxes away the second we get home with our new purchase

Bravo Ralfy, BRAVO! I abhor wasteful packaging. It turns me off when I am buying whiskey. I do not want my hard-earned money paying for packaging rather than the product I am actually buying. I would rather NO packaging at all. Although it's not all bad - I recently bought a bottle of Aberlour a'bunadh batch 66 with a 30% discount because it didn't have the outer tube. All the batch 71s on the shelf had them & the bottleshop owner told me that "no one wants that one because it doesn't have the box". It even had dust on it :)

'Evening Ralfy! Well said good Sir on the Glengoyne 18 excessive & unnecessary packaging. I'm 100% with you on this topic. Best wishes, Paul
