Do not forget Craigellachie and Glen Elgin using worm tubs. Their whiskies are really savoury and yummy.

The cost of producing a 20 year old Armagnac is probably higher than the production cost for a 20 year old Single malt - they use fresh cask, the maturation in a warmer climate may lead to larger angles' share, etc. Yet the single malts are more expensive, usually twice the price. If we are talking 50 year old Armagnac vs 50 year old Single malt, the difference is much bigger. So the higher energy prices might be just an excuse. Single malt whisky is expensive because of the demand, and because 4 or 5 companies control like 80% of the distilleries. Plus the Talisker 18 for example was distilled before 18 years. The price of the electricity sounds like a silly excuse. It is a good whisky, but sorry, I am not paying for excuses.

@@thewhiskybothy Was going to write the same. Grape crops are also more volatile and pricier than barley and yet you can pick up aged brandy from Jerez for a fraction of the cost of whisky. It is clear from recent auctions that the downturn has already started, with smaller auctions and many whiskies ending with a lower hammer price than last year. The whisky industry have had it good, including and perhaps especially over the covid period. As both a collector and drinker of Scottish single malt whisky over many years, I have no doubt that their recent raising of prices and marketing BS will come back to bite them sooner than they think. Yes their costs have gone up, but they have also been able to take advantage of a captive market for a long time.

Consumers vs customers, bravo Ralfy. Edradour was the first distillery I´ve ever visited. Remember arriving by train in the little town of Pitlochry, walking past the old cemetery, just to catch the very last visit of the day. Will never forget it. Hence a higher malt mark :)

Serendipity.....just by chance, last week I purchased a 12 year old bottle of Caledonia,...which will be my first Edradour whisky....and I am shortly coming into possession of a bottle of Signatory vintage 8 year old Staoisha un-chillfiltered collection heavily peated Bunnahabhain at 46%...and it will be my first Signatory bottle as well! Thanks Ralfy for the extra info I needed to help me in making my choices. It is nice knowing you have less of a chance of being disappointed with a flavourless mass produced offering.

I’m not so big a fan of sherry caskings, especially when PX sweet or richly raisin, but I dig the unusual, savory, sour or funky, so Edradour/Balechin definitely needs exploring more!

Thank you once again for your knowledge. I do know vodka producers add additives to it, most common are E422 , citric acid ,honey and sugar. It's an absolute shame it's almost never listed on a bottle. Right now I only buy bottles that include Armaniac , Cognac,Rum ,Vodka and most importantly Whiskey, which have nothing added to it. And I truly believe if we all do that they will change eventually they are not going to have a choice. I really hope one day it's going to be a standard to disclose everything on a bottle of liquor just like on a package of any food. Once again thank you for your knowledge and everything that you do.

I bought a big box of hand-filled samples to discover a wider array of flavours and have the chance to taste some older bottles without getting broke. I use them to understand my other bottles better or have a peek taste of not so prominent distilleries. Also a few samples of Armagnac and rum. Its a great way, if you have allready a small collection and dont want to buy another dozen bottles.

Greeting Mr Ralfy and thanks for the informative review as always. Right on point , it is all about the feeling and joy you get when drinking a dram. Last week I believe there was misprint or unusual sales in my local bottle shop and I bought a bottle of Raasay while we wait for AU$50, I really enjoyed it and went back and bought 2 more bottles I know a 46% single malt Isle won't last long on that price. As you mentioned Talisker 18, I was lucky to buy a very last bottle on its normal price , I have to admit that I love it very much, one of my fav peaty ones. Take care and don't worry about the winter, you are very welcome to come down here to sunny QLD and spend some time in my Bothy 😁

If the Edradour 10 DE is cozy and creamy the Unchillfiltered version is more outdoor, with the taste of fresh twiggs and leaves in it. Thanks Ralfy for introducing Edradour! Especially the Edradour Ballechin 8, but that was an earlier review. Anders, Stockholm

I love the Signatory releases of Edradour 10 year olds. I have been getting those bottles for around low-mid $60 USD as of late. For my budget that isn't bad considering the quality (non-chill filtered natural color and 46%) Love those releases. But if they get more expensive (like 100 USD) I definitely wouldn't keep buying! Plenty of other options.

So, thanks for the ammunition but it doesn't affect me personally 😁 Your notes on Edradour are very nice! I is a while ago since I last had one. It is on my screen now - and I will try to get one. Thanks!! However: If they sold anything below 40%, the law would be in the way to be able to call it Whisky!

I absolutely love Edradour. Sadly the pricing in my area of the US is really high. The last time I bought a bottle it was almost $70US. Now days in think it’s even more. Super frustrating the way pricing for liquor workers here.

I bought the 40% 10 year old and the 12 year old Edradour . Have to say I found the 10 year old a little insipid and thin and will perhaps add a dash of higher proof spirit to beef it up. Speaking of beef does anyone else get beef stock/ vegemite aspect in these whiskeys ?

Interesting. Trying to suss out the independent bottling situation here in the US I find a large retailer here in the US ( Specs ) has 9 different offerings from Edradour, 6 of which are under their own label, ranging from about $80 to $200. AND though they show nice color pics of many malts they don't show a real pic of their own offerings. Surprised given how small this distillery is. I suspect one of your indys like North Star has teamed up with whoever Specs is. Also suspect there is NOT a lot of real competition and or variance in this distribution. Nearest actual store for me is 100 miles away so .....

@@mrnosebear7406 I think that production capacity has changed since the installation of two new stills in a new stillhouse in 2018, thus doubling the output. Capacity may be now around 400,000 litres p.a., but actual production of spirit may still be around the 200,000 litre mark. Cheers.

I have given up on scotch whisky as the quality of the products doesn't match the price.Most of the rums I drink are reasonably priced and good quality products.If diageo increases its price that quickly it doesn't deserve to survive.
@tcandrewtam2282 жыл бұрын
Scotch, imo, reminds me a lot of the country in terms of environmental friendliness. The reusing of casks to make scotches showcases how you can make a quality product out of reusable materials. People needs to stop looking at it like a purist product and just enjoy it. Collecting scotch should be seen as buying a pair of used shoes.
