The thing about Teacher's that has not changed is the price. Thank you Teacher's! I have had some of the off batches over the last couple of years. They are still better than the mainstream blends. They have righted the ship as of late. Thanks Ralfy and all concerned. Teacher's is a jewel when funds are low and single malts are out of reach. I love it!

If it's this label Teacher's yes, the newer version isn't that creamy. When I first tasted Teachers with this label it was addictive. Very sweet and cream taste for a 3 year old blend was remarkable.

My Welsh uncle grew up in a pub managed by his mum, and he swore by Teacher's. I have followed suit and I absolutely love it. I enjoy Teacher's in a long glass with Schweppes Dry Ginger Ale and some ice. I find the peaty/malty flavor cuts right through the sweetness of the mixer. Win-win as far as I'm concerned! Thanks for another great review, Ralfy!

Ralfy - Good points on the changing of our palate. I notice my palate changes almost daily, often based on what I've had to eat or drink earlier that day. Even our levels of hydration can affect our palate, since it affects our saliva production and taste buds. I've had whisky that has been disappointing one night that suddenly tastes fantastic the next night. Have the contents in the bottle changed? No. It was me who changed!

Sipping on some Teachers right now. It's my favorite blended Scotch, and brings a lot of peat to the party for a budget whisky. The Grouse is a good value too, but comes in second to Teachers.

You may be tasting Ardmore, but not GlenDronach. The latter was a core malt of this blend for a very long time, but no longer due to a change in corporate ownership. GlenDronach has been replaced with another malt and hence a lot of the reason for the change in flavor. At least that is my take.

Thanks Ralfy for this re-review of the Teacher's highland Cream. I have limited experience with whisky and I'm not a rich person, so buying an affordable bottle once in a while is a good thing in my book. I just opened up a bottle of this stuff two weeks ago and I must say that I find it enjoyable and quite a bargain really. I figured that at this price, it wasn't much of a gamble. But I'm pleasantly surprised that I actually enjoy it. LOL

Great review. Quite caramelly/sweet for me now that my tastes have developed. I mixed about 150 ml Ardmore in an almost full bottle of Teacher's and amazingly, after a week came back to it and it tasted really creamy like the Teacher's I tasted 15 years ago. Teacher's Origin very similar and not so caramelly and a bit more depth.

I consider Teacher's to be one of the best widely available, affordable, entry-level blended scotches. It actually has 45 percent malt whisky, which is a lot more than many other brands. Many blends only have 20 to 30 percent malt whisky, and some have as little as 10 to 15 percent, which explains why they often don't have much character. I often say that Teacher's is the value alternative to Johnny Walker Black Label. Obviously, they are made by different companies (Diageo vs. Beam-Suntory) and the whiskies that compose them are different, but in terms of peat and style they are quite similar. The main difference and difference in price is that Johnnie Walker Black is aged 12 years, while Teacher's is basically aged the minimum 3 years. But I feel that Teacher's tastes mature enough for a young whisky.

I have not tasted yet (will do later!), but I actually wanted to say that I find so easy to understand you speaking, it is so perfect! Wise words, my friend! I think you were saying that the bottlers would tell you to take a running jump at yourself and touch the cat when you arrived! A certain vineyard in NZ put out a justly popular cream sherry. But then (1978) for some reason, they let a sour batch slip through. They lost so many customers that recovery of reputation was not at their disposal. Once bitten, twice shy.

Ralfy I have to tell you that this stuff is so smooth, and I think quite tasty. I've tried black bottle, and I actually like the teachers scotch better. With a little water added, it is an excellent blended scotch. I had to do a bit of searching to find it in Indianapolis Indiana. I finally found it, and couldn't believe how cheap it was to purchase. Just thought I woul d share my opinion of this more than affordable scotch.

It's no Islay, but...the malt component is definitely evident; more so than on comparably priced blends. I was not impressed years ago, because I was drinking Laphroiag (one of the several best whiskies of all time). Teacher's, however, about 30% of the price. There you have it. Great video, by the way.

I didn't experience a decline in the Ardmore bottles I had last year. Maybe Teacher's is watering down the single malt with more grain spirit? Another blend that might justify a re-review is Compass Box Peat Monster. They've added Laphroaig to the blend which, to me, completely dominates and overpowers the other malts. Not saying whether that's better or worse, but very different from the initial review here.

I bought a bottle at the local Co Op last week on offer at fifteen quid. Usually I only drink the single malts but seeing some of your previous reviews of blended I thought it was worth a try. I was not disappointed, the malt is there in strength and although the sweetness surprised me the kick of the grain tempers this and makes for a somewhat pleasant tipple, although the sweetness does becomes a bit much after a few. Agree completely with your review, this would be a good whisky for the newcomer to try and is not out of place in the more experienced whisky drinkers cupboard alongside the single malts.

Ralfy just tried last year. This is what i think now. Theres alot of new cask influence like striaght american treatments. STRS casks show there face. This leads to a lot of vanilla. Theres alot oak mixed wih with barley. Butterscotch. Some peat. So cheap in usa 13$a bottle. Very worth it in my opinion.

I don't know, Ralfy. I usually concur with your reviews, this time however I do not. I bought a bottle a while back based on a review in a different site. It was without a doubt one of the worst whiskeys I've ever tasted. I thought it deserved another try, so I picked up another one last week. It tastes medicinal and metallic and just plain bad. Maybe it came from the same batch as the one I first tried, or maybe I just don't like it. It reminds me of really bad Canadian whiskeys. I'm oddly happy that I don't like it. I was starting to think that I was succumbing to the power of suggestion, and liking it just because you and others do. Anyway, nice review as usual. Keep up the good work!

As a Scotch newbie, I like this one. Scotch to me is usually too woody/bitter/acrid compared to American whiskeys. I like some sweetness. I love the smokiness in this. It reminds me of mezcal. I hear that it is artificially colored. : (

Agreed! things are getting out of hand. There was a time I would drop $200-300/month to the online brokers...but not anymore. It really is a crap shoot and one can just read the comments that afford testament to this this fact. If things aren't "that bad"/"that good" in which direction will the balance shift? Is it up to us to spend big dollars to find out?? Isn't that what "reviews" are all about? I often feel that there is a subtle bias between the industry and many review sites...not all of them but its becoming clear when these $60-70 bottles of scotch are disappointing at best. Its becoming a trust issue and I have not heard the "real truth" from any commentator. We do however get "truthiness" that little area between fact and fiction and its up to folks like Ralfy to give it to us straight, neat if you will with nothing ambiguous or watered down. I no longer am playing a guinea pig for the industry there's just no future in it. Peace

I may have mentioned it before, but I would love to see you review Bank Note. It is easily my favorite blend for the price. In my opinion it is along the lines of a young JW Black. Perhaps because of its youth, but I find it has greater character (though does taste a bit green) than JW Black. It is also bottled at 43% rather than 40%. Teachers has been my go-to for almost 8 years now, since down in Brazil it is pretty much the cheapest stuff you can get, and even when it's not so great it kicks the arse of just about anything else near twice it's price point. The quality has indeed varied very much from 2013-ish to a big dip that seems to happen every few months or maybe every few years. Flavour profile, aroma, bite, everything changes, and while that is not a bad thing in and on itself, the changes in quality were rather drastic. A good lot gives most stuff twice, thrice or even four times it's cost a run for it's money, but bad lots make it stand for a cheap whisky (to be fair, it is). EDITING because I didn't realize that I didn't give a ballpark. Teachers costs from £10-20 a bottle, while just about anything else (that's not a Brazilian "whisky") costs £30-100. Yes, converted for your convenience.

In respect of Teacher's, Suntory has advised the percentage of peated Ardmore in the blend has reduced as they compensate for the extra peatiness coming through from the use of ex-Laphroaig barrels. They have over 20 different malts and 3 different grains in the blend, Ardmore was and still is making up 15% of the full blend, Glendronach was part of the blend, less than 1% of the malt and therefore less than 0.5% of the blend. Glendronach as a single malt is normally Sherry Matured, the stock for Teacher’s was not sherry matured and none of the stock is sherry matured. The 0.5% of Glendronach is no longer part of the blend as the new owners, The BenRiach Distilling Company, no longer trade Glendronach. Others include Aultmore, Auchroisk, Balmenach, Benriach, Dailuaine, Fettercairn, Glenfarclas, Glenrothes, Linkwood and Pulteney.

Hi Ralfy.. You mentioned this is for folks who like little bit of peatiness but not an Islay fan. Could you please recommend me some more similar whiskies which are lightly peated and smokey but not overwhelming. thanks.

Surprised by this. I tried three or more bottles over a year or two here in Canada just to make sure it wasn't one bad bottle, and they were all dreadful. Like 68/100 level bad. Tasteless stale watery peat and not much else. I had to make sure it was bad because it used to be my favourite blend by far. Perhaps I'll give it another whirl one of these days, but I hate being ripped off.

I bought a bottle recently out of curiosity when it was on sale -- I find the flavor to be plain and flat except for an odd sort of peaty finish that is reminiscient of the smell of dried sweat socks. IMO, most comparably priced blends, such as JWR, Dewars WL or Grants, are far better.

This whisky has become my go-to whisky for everything, cooking, mixing, sipping, and getting sideways at parties. Ardmore is a delicious whisky and this blend is much better suited to me than Johnnie walker red/black (most of the time)/ gold, Grant's, Ballantine's etc. Again, my go-to whisky under $50 (LCBO prices)... rest of the world you can get single malts for $50. Oh and it's very peated, the hipsters keep out of my bottle!

Ralfy, just got to say this is the first time I tried teachers blend tonight. I bought it because it was 17$ a liter bottle in America. There's only a few scotches that can beat that! This had some peat on the nose, and some rubbery medicinal stuff and grain and wood stuff. The taste wasn't as good. Vanilla, carmel, but very bitter. Your opinion, is this legendary blend going to be killed off, or relegated to the bottom shelf. Thanks in advance

ralfydotcom Glad I tried it for this bargain price. Was seen for much more expensive over the years and I always passed. First impressions aren't favourable, but maybe it will improve with time.

ralfydotcom Also, bottled at 43 abv. I believe that has been changed, I wonder if the new branding and lower price mean a campaign for this in USA.

ralfydotcom 2/3 of the way through now. It's much better. Great peat that's very different then Isay peat. Like a scorched top soil. Rich honey and caramel are also enjoyable. I wish I could find Ardmore. There's still unpleasant bitter tannins though. It takes a good bit of water for a blend and it helps. I think I'll buy a few of these liters though. Excellent price in US.
