Best day of my life was when I was walking down the street in Gatlinburg TN , on my phone, because I run a distillery gift shop here and there was a little person wrestling competition in town. I hung up and realized that I was surrounded by a league. Now, I am 5’11, the guy walking beside me looks up and says “ everyone is going to think that you’re our mom”. Frank, Rondo, technically speaking, both terms describe someone 4'10" tall or less. Midget is considered a derogatory term among people who have dwarfism. But it was originally coined to distinguish between 2 forms of Dwarfism. Dwarves (and we are talking "little people" not mythological Dwarves like in Fairy Tales, Tolkien's Stories, Poetic Eddas, etc) are described as people under 4'10" with disproportionately shorter limbs. Usually the torso and head are not much different than regularly proportioned people. Whereas "Midgets" was coined to describe people 4'10" or less who were proportionately built, but still a dwarf. 😉 So little people don't like the term "midget" because it was often applied as a substitute word for freak. Also, there have been frictions in the past between the two types of dwarves. Some little people see proportionate little people as strange or a bit alien. And vice versa. There are Midgets who find the word Dwarf offensive. There are Dwarves who find the word Midget offensive. And there are little people who don't care unless the tone of voice of the person calling them midget is obviously intended as a slight.

Midgets are little people whose bodies are proportioned the same as a full size person. Dwarves have parts of their bodies (usually heads) that are proportionally larger. I think that used to be the difference between the two words, but now they seem to be used pretty much as synonyms.

They probably both started at the same time. Back in the day, before there was science, people used myths and legends to explain everything they didn't understand. When someone was stopped growing at a young age and was super short as an adult, they probably came up with some magical or spiritual explanation for it, and then people probably started coming up with legends about dwarves. Over time, as people started using science to explain things rather than myths, the mythical dwarf and the real life dwarf became two separate things.
