I hate the fact that newer trucks use buttons for 4x4 now, just something about a second Lever always felt right to me and better than buttons. But aside from my preference for old stuff it's overall a good video with good info. Thanks m8

I drive in 4WD Auto mode 70% of time , when it is snow or slippery road I go with 4WD LOCK mode in heavy snow/mud/ice, and 2WD in dry summer road (except when it heavily rains).
@GettysGarage3 жыл бұрын
makes sense. one thing I would say is that in 4wd auto there is slight pressure on that clutch pack in the transfer case. meaning there is going to be more wear on it then in 2wd. Now the system is designed to handle like that but something to be aware of. I personally only go into 4wd lock or auto when the roads are snow covered.

I got a riddle for ya, I have a 2016 ram rebel 1500 with air suspension. It snowed here In Washington St, so I decided to put truck into 4low to get out of parking lot. Drove forward for like 20ft no problem then reverse for about 20ft then right when I shifted into drive my 4wd light on my dash disappeared but when I looked at my 4wl button, I noticed that 4wl button was blinking and my 2wd was aluminated. However, my truck is still stuck in 4wlock, it allows me to get on free way and go above 50 miles an hour and even go into aero mode. Dealer said I was not in 4wd because none of the buttons work and 2wd is aluminated but when I turn hard either reverse or drive like unto a parking spot the tires or something feels like it's binding up or not turning correctly and become hard to move until wheel gets straight. Unplugged the battery and now 2wd and 4wl doesn't aluminate but nothing happened still feel like I'm in 4wlock

With the part time (no "auto") transfer case the driveshaft doesn't spin in 2wd. I have stuffed a camera under my 2015 Ram 1500 with the part time transfer case and the driveshaft is stationary in 2wd. There is a center axle disconnect.

This is a great video explaining how it works. On those concerned about the clutch plates, my Rover has this design clutch plate system on the rear locker, I call it variable lock. The plates have never worn out, 260k + though I'm on about the 3rd set of bearings. I think the clutch plate is a reliable system, given the understanding that the computer needs time to "figure it out" It seems like a plus to have the "auto" 4wd in less than ideal conditions, but not strictly on the the trail.
@GettysGarage3 жыл бұрын
personally I would much rather have an old school mechanical gear on gear type of system but you can't argue the simplicity and reliability of a well designed clutch pack 4wd system. I'm hoping mine will last that long!
@toddt31973 жыл бұрын
@@GettysGarage I see no reason why it will not. It also does provide some "give" in the drive train. These trucks, at least the 2500 PW can be ordered either way, so if folks have a preference, bear that in mind when buying. I hope to be happy with my choice (clutch pack) auto mode.

I haven't seen a video that shows how the GM trucks for the Fords operate. Do their front driveshafts also spin in 2wd?
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
it all depends on their 4wd set up. I would imagine if they have any 4wd auto option their front driveshaft would be spinning at all times.

Maybe, but I doubt it for a 1500. when you step up to solid front axles in the ram 2500 your much more likely to have option there. it is interesting how the the ford super duties have stayed with the manual locking hubs. or at least have the option

If you engage 4wd on dry pavement do not turn left or right as that is when you will have binding. I've owned a 2005 Dodge Ram and know for a fact.
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
these new rams have a different transfer case. it's a clutch pack system and it will disengage itself when it senses steering input. it's not a true locking 4wd system. more like an Awd set up. I put this truck in 4wd lock with traction control off and turned this truck in a circle as tight as I could. no binding at all. the bad part of that system is that these new trucks suffer some off-road capability
@dalephillips82502 жыл бұрын
@@GettysGarage Oh ok I didn't know that about the new ones. When mine was in 4wd people were surprised that all 4 wheels turned at the same time as if I had lockers on the front and rear and it was a beast in the snow.
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
@@dalephillips8250 unless you have two lockers (front and rear) the power won't be split evenly to every wheels. obviously every wheels can receive power and when all wheels are on relatively equal traction (snow) there is no need for differential action. odds are you probably have a LSD diff or locker in the rear of the truck but it is rare to have one in the front. either way a truck a true locking transfercase and a LSD in the rear is usually very capable!

Great video. I was wondering how the front diff and axles worked. I read that Ford uses clutch plates as well, but on the hubs or front axles for the F150. Hence why the Raptor can have an Torsen diff in the front. I was wondering if there was a way to have a Torsen or Eaton Truetrac in the front as well for the Ram. That would be my preferred setup instead of switchable lockers.

unfortunately there is no aftermarket diff offered at this point for the front ends of these 4th gen trucks. which does kind of suck.
