I was a Crew Chief on C-130's for 21 years. We were taught to wait 2 minutes at ground idle prior to shutdown. As a test cell operator at Pratt & Whitney, we too observe a 2 minute cool down at G/I prior shutdown for oil coking.
@MarionBlair6 жыл бұрын
Hey Phillip, you know better than I. (I have been on a c-130, ha), Isn't the bearing operating temp on the average turbine in the 400 deg. F range? Is that right? We are talking about two different animals. Oil cokes at about 600 deg. (synthetic better) so the 2 minutes is probably very conservative?

Hi Marion, Great video and agree with you on the damage that is done on hot shut downs. I find cool down times interesting. I own a toyota hilux turbo diesel and utilise a cool down period of about 1-2 minutes if working hard, and normal city driving with no load, i’ll do 30 odd seconds. I also work in a mine in Australia that operates large turbo diesel equipment. I, myself operate an excavator with a 50 litre, v16 twin turbo cummins( sounds amazing under full load ). These run around 10-11 engine hours per shift at 80% load or greater all shift, so they get hot, especially during summer, and i see these things shut down from other operators for a lunch break immediately. They literally get throttled down to idle, and then turned off immediately, by operators who don’t care or don’t know what they are doing. These engines have zero cool down time generally, and yet these turbos survive on these engines for around 10,000 hours before being replaced under ‘mid-life’ replacement programme. I dont do this myself as i have far more sympathy than other operators, but yeah find it interesting they survive this extreme shut downs every single day. Do you know where your ‘Egt1’ probe picks its data from? I know our equipment do have probes for egt’s and after only about 2 minutes, they are in a safe 400f/200c degree range according to the machines on board computer. 🤷♂️ keep up the good work, and drive safe 👍

I always let my truck idle after pulling heavy for 5-10 minutes but after this video I will likely extend that time. Thanks for the videos.

Marion Blair have not been to ARK yet but I am sure it is nice. TN was beautiful but campsite was disappointing- we know for next time😁. I can’t say enough good on how the truck did towing again. Pulled up and down the mountain great. The auto exhaust brake is excellent for holding the speed you are at when you get off the throttle and/or brake. Trans got a bit hotter than I would have liked,(212 degrees), but it was because of all the stops and starts while climbing- dropped right back down once I was able to keep moving. Keep the videos coming👍

@MarionBlair5 жыл бұрын
I'm just a conservative person, 5 mins might work fine but and may not be much difference. The main thing is do some cool down to keep from coking the bearing. The temperature is what significant, not the time. But if you don't have a way to monitor temp. I'd stretch it a little when heavy towing. thanks. I like your channel.

I don't, You'll have to drill the exhaust manifold to insert the sensor. There's a sensor already in the exhaust downstream of the turbo but you need a gauge to read it.

Great video as usual Marion. Don’t have an exhaust gas temperature gauge, what is your engine temperature related to that 400 degrees and would it be relevant to shut down.
@MarionBlair6 жыл бұрын
Oil can coke and begin to ruin the turbo lines and bearing at 600 deg. F so 400 is considerable below that and is generally accepted as a safe conservative shutdown temp. IMO waiting longer just eats up time sitting in the truck waiting and doesn't really accomplish much. Probably excessive idling does more harm than good.

@@MarionBlair to monitor the turbo temperature does a sensor have to be added to it? Or does it get it's information from the obd port that the Edge monitor is plugged into?
@MarionBlair6 жыл бұрын
No, the EGT1 is adequate for turbo temps. The only difference is the EGT1 reading is probably delayed a few seconds since the exhaust gas travels from the manifold to the turbo and thru it before you get the reading. As you run down the highway, All 3 EGT sensors eventually have the same reading so I'm confident the EGT1 is more than adequate and you use the sensor that's already being read. thanks.

Do you let it idle while sitting at the pump itself? Won't that annoy people behind you? If pulling a trailer it could pose some logistical problems to park on the side somewhere to cool down. I have noticed at truck stops when I drove a diesel rental truck that the big rigs idle for a while at the pump is this what they are doing? I don't remember if they even shut down the engines. I am new to diesel - actually don't have one yet so pardon the newbie questions.
@MarionBlair5 жыл бұрын
I've never had anyone complain about noise at a diesel pump and I usually fill up on the auto side not the big rig side. Yes, the big rigs know the problems you can encounter with oil coking from not cooling down and they also like the AC running, ha. Don't worry about it running around getting groceries but towing or high speed empty, definitely. The Ram does have a water cooled turbo and that helps a lot but the manual says 5 mins. That's a little shy as the video shows if you have been towing and pull right in for a fuel up.

Does the EGT readout on the edge insight read from the OBD2 as well or is there an actual EGT probe on the manifold? Research seems to indicate you still need the physical probe but your comments seem to indicate no external probe required. Thank you - Looking to gauge up a new 2018 Ram Laramie 3500 4x4
@MarionBlair6 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. For shut down temps and general EGT, I don't think you need to drill and tap the manifold. For racers and engine builders etc.... Yes, you wouldn't want any delay in EGT read out. Personal opinion. When I run for 10 to 15 minutes on the highway, all the probes in the exhaust system read the same, so I'm comfortable with the reading from the EGT1.

@MarionBlair6 жыл бұрын
No, I'm reading EGT1 behind the turbo.
@monsterram66176 жыл бұрын
Just a FYI, that reading can be 100°-200°F lower than when measured at the collector, which is considered to be the more accurate location to read EGTs.
@MarionBlair5 жыл бұрын
@@monsterram6617 Yea, I know it's not accurate as the manifold. Are you saying the manifold temp is going to be lower than the probe downstream of the turbo?

@@monsterram6617 F.Y.I. all 18 wheel trucks E.G.T. probe is AFTER the turbocharger.
@monsterram66175 жыл бұрын
@@nellyfarnsworth7381 What does that have to do with getting a more accurate reading from the manifold? The idea behind measuring before the turbo is to get the most accurate measurement of *cylinder temps.* If you measure after the turbo charger, you're getting readings that are hundreds of degrees lower than what's actually occurring. Mfgs of 18 wheelers probably don't care because they aren't fueling enough to create absurdly high EGTs in the first place. And the EGT probe is more for the PCM and not the driver. Likewise, if you aren't at least tuned there's no reason to even monitor EGTs either. It's only there for the PCM. But if you're going to monitor EGTs, it's probably because you're truck is tuned and maybe even has air/fuel mods. Then you definitely want the most accurate reading, and that is in the collector _before_ the turbo. Does that make sense?

Carl, the sensors are already on the truck, the gauge plugs into the ODBCII connector under the dash and reads the trucks computer. You can do this very easily with an app called torque and a bluetooth transmitter.

quick question, if you arent hauling and trailering, do you still see these temps?
@MarionBlair6 жыл бұрын
Skipnick, no you don't see nearly the high temps as towing. You will see about 700 F when running highway however and that's too high to shutdown. Normally, by the time you get on the off ramp and a couple of minutes have expired, you are safe to shut down. The engine cools down much slower when towing.

For egts as important as there are why (strictly dodge only what I’m familiar with since I own one) don’t they have a factory parameter to monitor also a cool down warning or auto cool down.?
@MarionBlair5 жыл бұрын
They are not on a stock truck Some people like to know when they are in a regen. Monitoring the DPF EGT3 tells you that but no need to spend money on a gauge. If you tow, let it idle 5 mins before shutting down and all is fine. On a tuned truck where the HP is cranked up, an EGT probe in the manifold would probably be wise to not exceed 1000-1200 max.

I come from the Subaru world, where they have an separate coolant tank for the turbo to give it somewhere for the turbo to thermo syphon after shutting the engine off. I haven’t looked at coolant hose routing on the 6.7 I just bought, but I wonder if it is routed in such a way to allow for a thermo syphon after shutoff.

@@MarionBlair - Looks the JIC line at the top of the turbo does come forwards and tie into the braided hose that’s between the air intake silencer and EGR butterfly, which then goes to the 5/16” line back to the coolant degas bottle. Not gonna lie though, I know for a fact that Subaru’s run a 1/2” or 9/16” coolant hose for their turbos (albeit way higher EGT’s) and this might be 3/8” on the Cummins.

Yes the manual says 5 minutes to no minutes depending on conditions. In town driving, traffic light to traffic light sort of thing, (empty), no need to idle.
