This video is about RAM CUMMINS P20E8 DEF CODE ALMOST COST ME $3K!! I had trouble with my truck driving down the road the other day. The check engine line came on along with service def system. Then a message appeared max speed 5 mph starting in 150 mi. I took the truck in to get scanned and the code was P20E8 reductant flow low. The dealer said def fluid was good but the pump and def injector needed replaced. I declined the work brought the truck home cleaned the crystallized def fluid from the injector re installed it and all is working fine now.

Aye, 17 year old here. My mom has a 2013 2500 crew cab with the 6.7l turbo cummins. She bought the truck like half a year ago with moderate mileage stacked on the odometer. Its currently having this service def system message pop up. today is the first time its ever happened so im crossing my fingers and hoping this is the issue. Im pretty ignorant when it comes to the computerized stuff. My dad was a heavy equipment mechanic and could tackle pretty much anything given the proper tools and space to handle whatever project it may have been. Unfortunately he passed away october of 2019, so im stepping up to the plate and embracing mechanics. Never worked on a diesel in my life. I understand what makes them run. My specialty is small block chevy, I just had a set of 1.94 camelhump heads rebuilt for a small block im building up. Really would like to save mom the 3k if I can. People like you make life easy for people like me. Thanks for the video and pointing me in the direction of the other channel. I will say this, if I ever buy a dodge, im getting a 93 extended cab 4x4 2500 with the Allison 5 speed and the 5.9 turbo cummins. My dad had one and it was the coolest truck ever. My husband and I want to thank you for making this video. You explained it very well. I have a 2014 Ram 2500, and over a week ago, I was in town when the DEF message came on with the 150-mile warning. I got it home, looked it up on KZbin, found your video, and had a hard time finding the pump, but I finally found one and ordered an injector. I ordered the pump tool from your Amazon link (thank you so much for that). My husband put it in no problems. When I started the truck, the DEF message went away. We drove it a short distance a few times. Then I took it to town, which is 45 miles. To get my check engine light to go off, we did not have a code reader. So found out if you turn the key two clicks before it starts 4 times, let all the dash lights finish before you go on to the next, then one more time but when all the dash lights go out, start the truck. So you do it five times, and on the 5th time, you start the vehicle. Check Engine Light went out right away. The first time I did it, I went too fast, and it did not work. Thank you again. It saved us half what they were going to charge to fix.

Light came on first of June at 180 some thousand miles. I cleaned the injector and cleaned out the hose and that got me by till about the end of September and then the pump quit altogether.

The big problem with all the pollution controls on the diesels is the parts are all aftermarket. The engine manufacturers dont make the parts. The makers dont have any incentive to fix the defective parts just minimal warranty on them. We all should be pushing for legislation to mandate 10yr parts and labour warranty on all parts related to the pollution controls from the date of sale regardless of how many times the vehicle changes hands

Thank you for posting this! I was driving from the LA area to Las Vegas on a Friday and near the Nevada/California state line I got the dreaded "limp mode" message. Of course I freaked because I was 240 miles from home! The next day I took my 2016 2500 to local Ram dealer in Vegas. I asked them to run the code so maybe they could narrow the issue to a sensor, pump or sensor. The folks at Chapman Ram were great but unfortunately the code was very generic. They told me since I was from out of town, they could squeeze me in and have their diesel tech take a look at it more deeply for a fee but they couldn't do any actual work on it for days. I had this issue before, a few months after I bought the truck new. I got the injector replaced under warranty back in 2016, so I figured it may be the injector again and maybe if I just clean it like you mentioned, I would be good. So before I agreed to have the diesel tech look at, I went to an auto parts store, bought a small metric ratchet set, found a shady spot in 108 degree Vegas and went to work. Sure enough, the injector was all crystalized. I cleaned it and after 2 restarts, the message cleared! Drove home the next day and the message hasn't returned since! BIG THANKS again for posting this and saving me from a nightmare!

I just took my truck to dodge dealership with same issue. I found out if you overfill the DEF tank your pump will not pump. Plus the level gauge is slow to react so you need to be patient when filling. They drained about a gallon out of tank and pump started pumping. Just a issue I had for your viewers.

Would you mind providing more detail? This is exactly what I am dealing with and my mpg has dropped to 11 with an empty trailer. Doesn’t make sense, I had a feeling the dpf wasn’t getting cleaned. Do you drain from the filler or the tank itself?

That's strange because when the guage says it's down to 1/4 tank, I always refill then. I usually go to truck stops while towing or 5th wheel and able to fill both my fuel & def tanks from there pumps and pay for both. But as I'm filling after about 2 gallons it registered full but traveling cross the country I try to to off both tanks. After guage read full I've continued & out in atleast another 2-3 halls of def until it actually over file it once but my 2013 6.7 Cummins didn't have any problem you mentioned about being overfilled!!!

If you do delete the EGR , does that disable the whole DEF system without removing the rest of the parts ? TIA . . . .I've got a light on my dash right now throwing a P202C code. They say it is the upper heater but can't even order one until June 30th. , they looked at it April 28th. So, driving it hoping it doesn't throw the 150 mile warning before I can get something done . Im in a state that doesn't do inspections so I'm really leaning toward losing a few parts on a bumpy road .

@@b10santaana98 you will have to go online snd dig around for a shop that will do deletes. Depends on your state . In my case , The egr was deleted by adding a EFI live tune ( 45 hp ) increase for fuel economy. The egr is left in the closed position snd the computer reprogrammed as not to notice it any more. The hard ware remains as it still looks operational but the wiring harness is disconnected and ends taped for water intrusion protection. The def delete involves remove the entire exhaust and related hardware, the def tank remains and a new flow pro exhaust was installed. The truck drives better, sounds better, breathes better, and 15-20% increase in fuel economy.

My 2017 3500 just did this today, cleaned the injector like you said. I took an ice pic to clean it out, it was blocked pretty good. Cleared codes and reset. Engine light off and no codes showing. Thanks for video👍🏻

These dealership mechanics are scroundrels, my brother bought a ford edge but didnt get the key pad codes for the door locks with it and the dealer mech told him it would take an hour hooked up to a computer to retrieve the #'s and it was gonna cost $300. So I found a youtube vid and had him watch it cause it has the #code up under the dash on a sticker which he could look on his own and retrieve for free👍

Ya, first time I had that happen, DEF delete, straight pipe and tune. Best part is the massive mpg jump. Screw DEF, my mpg return with current fuel prices will cover the cost of the kit.

Yep plugging in is not always a definitive diagnosis. Weather the dealer knew the actual problem or not and was going to replace the parts or do whatever you did in the way of cleaning them and charge you for new parts you'll never know. Where I live California 1997 is pre diesel emissions so I just stick with the old ones.

Had this exact thing happen to me with my previous 2015. Happened while loaded in Indiana and I live in WV scared me to death I wasn’t gonna make it home lol. Ended up unplugging one of the batteries and tried starting it to reset it and that worked long enough to get me home but mine started at 200 miles. I ended up spending about 5k though. Crazy how the prices were different for you and I lol.

I had the same message pop up. I removed the DEF injector and noticed the crystalized DEF almost blocking the hole into the SCR. I cleaned out the blockage and the injector using distilled water. Also used the Android "Alfa OBD" app to actuate the DEF injector with the test "DEF Reductant Doser Pump Override Test" after placing it into a container. It causes the DEF injector pump to run for approximately 6 1/2 minutes. After the time is up you make sure it pumped 85 ml to 115 ml (1/2 cup) of DEF. Mine tested good. I replaced the DEF injector gasket and reinstalled the injector to the SCR. I've been problem free now for 6 months. Part of my normal maintenance will be to remove the DEF doser injector annually and remove any crystalized DEF with distilled water. I find it to be an easily preventive service process to incorporate into my normal maintenance routine.

Add a water methanol injection if you're out of warranty. It helps clean the DPF and will delay regeneration from about 110 miles to over 200 miles. Really helps with MPG. Diesel Power magazine did a study b4 they went under...

Dealer told me the same thing they said 3400 in ONLY parts plus labor said I was looking at about 4200 total cost I told the service guy “so you’re telling me I need to delete and tune the truck”, service guy: *stuttering* um uh umm I I guess that would be a cheaper alternative” I said you damn straight it is leave it like that and I’ll have that truck breathing like it should have been out the factory for about 1400 with me doing the install on a i6 6.7 Cummins best thing I could have done to that truck it’s a monster now, fuck the dealer the reason I got a Cummins was so I could work on my truck maintenance and everything. Took it in just for shits and giggles one day to see how much they would charge for trans fluid, transfer case, and radiator flush with new hoses told me it was going to be 1400 parts and labor if I buy the fluids I’m looking at about 400-500 in fluids and parts I’m saving about 1k just in maintenance

2014 3500HD Dually long bed crew cab. Had the alert of the "Exhaust filter 100% full". Then the DEF put me into the warning of, now at 50 miles till 5mph. I decided to do the delete. Got the pipes out and replaced with straight pipe. Removed the DEF system. But then decided to look on here to see information and found I could clean the filter. I did that, along with the def part of the exhaust, cleaned the hell out of the def tank and all the lines and cleaned up the injector. I do have the straight pipe in but think I'm going to replace everything and see how well I did on the cleaning. If it's all good, I'll leave it in place. The next alert I get I'm going to find the tuner for less than $1200 and do the delete. I cleaned the shit out of everything. Wish me luck.

I did the complete delete with program on it with amazing improvements on power, fuel consumption and performance eventually pulling my 18,000 pound 5th wheel. I used the "Autocal" tuner, I believe I remember that correctly.... I have it in a box somewhere.... I paid around $400 plus $150 for the vin tune Tuning with "tow" program. I'll be doing the same thing on this new Silverado I purchased last year that replaced the Ram. As for attempting the reuse of the exhaust system, I hadn't tried doing so. Just removed it all and did the tune.

I’d love to just remove my injector and clean it. But the heads of the bolts are rusted off. I’ve tested all I can test on the truck itself. DEF pump is working and as far as I can tell the injector ohms out good. Just can’t get the injector out because the heads of the bolts are basically rounded off. Guess the SCR pipe is going to have to come off

Not sure about the pick ups but the big trucks have a filter in the def tank for the def fluid. Pick up should have a filter as well they get plugged also get old and deteriorate because no body knows to change them. Will give same symptoms

I'm going to try this on my truck... My truck is a 17, had just over 25K miles on it when these alerts started. The truck has 66, 345 miles on it now and I've had probably 13-14 alerts but it only happens at high elevation (6,000-8,000 feet) when these alerts pop up.... Dodge has flashed the computer system (4 times) and replaced the DEF tank & pump.. did not fix the problem... now, the truck is out of warranty and I need to figure out what's going on.

I have a 2014 and I just got a U029D code lost communication with NOX sensor A. I did their the service DEF message on the instrument panel/dash… I ordered the tool to remove NOX sensor and I’m gonna clean and see what happens. Now I just need to figure out which one is module A….

I have a 2016 Titan XD PR.. Had a CEL at 23,000 in Nov 2020, Scanner said Nox sensor.. I took them out to soak and clean overnight.. no help.. I took it to stealership they said they read online SCR Replacement needed.. that diagnostic was $150... repair estimate $4000. I left and made it home.. now truck sits in driveway.. keep thinking delete.. but maybe I should say the hell with diesels.. never again..

I have not the slightest idea about the titan. I’ve never been around one. If they telling you an scr replacement that’s one of the filters in the exhaust which are extremely high priced. If you can delete it I’d look into that. I enjoy diesels but unfortunately I feel like they are going to make the so complicated that people stop buying them and get forced to get a gas or electric vehicle.

Thanks man, The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an advanced active emissions control technology system that has crazy high costs and no choices except to routinely replace components or remove and clean and have ECM reset.. (it measures amount of fuel used in truck among others things.) However, they are all failure prone.. mine failed just outside of basic warranty.. and Diesel Emission are excluded from everything except basic 3 year, 36,000 miles. I have a 2016 I purchased in May of 2017, Dec of 2020, have 23,000 miles on it, had many failures with engine parts that were under warranty but Nissan did not do the complete repair that would have prevented future premature failure of the Emission systems. They did not put it in their repair manuals, and techs have to follow manual to the letter, still not there either, never will be they just discontinued selling the Diesel line and at least in my area got rid of all the Diesel Techs. So at 23,000 miles, I only have a couple of choices, I do a delete and void the warranty, pay what could end up being a $15,000 repair on emissions, or try to trade the truck in.. and take a huge loss.. If I drive it too much more it will go into LIMP mode or Derate and then it will need to be towed into a dealer with no Diesel Techs.. to sit for years I assume..

Same happened to me in my 16 ram that only had 30000 miles on it. They told me it was $4000 to fix if it wasen"t under warranty. The cummings is a great motor but the accessories parts are junk.I now own a ford ..

3k, would have been cheaper to do a DEF Delete. Stealer-ships were going to clean it and charge you 3k. I do all my own work, don't care if it ends up costing me more the first time around, it's a learning experience.

I wonder if you flush out the tank with hot water, would that clean out the crystallization inside the tank, fill it and pump it back out.

im sure it would if you have crystalize built up but i dont know. strait water would make the sensors freak out probably.

Thanks for this video.. had the warning come on my way home. I didn't have enough miles to make it home so I stopped with 89 miles till 5 mph (limp mode) unhooked both batteries let truck sit for about 30 min reconnected batteries. The countdown was off but the message to service def was still on. I made is roughly 40 more miles before the countdown message came again. Atleast I had the restart of the 150 miles so plenty to make it home. But now here sit .I will try cleaning the injector in the morning. Btw mine is a 2020ram don't know if anything has changed on the Def setup. I assume it's the same?

The 2020 is a 5th generation so it may be a little different but i dont know I haven’t seen one.

I know 2 people who had to pay over 3k to replace the entire def system. One truck is one year old, the other is 4 months. It's ridiculous.

What if we redirect that flow back into the top of the tank instead of the exhaust. Then we can fill it up one time and the computer shouldn't know the difference

Not bad... buddy,s paying 10,000 for head gaskets In chev duramax...they had to pull the cab off to fix it.....cheaper than pulling the engine...

I dont know just depends if your pulling a lot I’d rather have the torque of the diesel. We have a brand new f-450 with the 7.3 gas an it already has a check engine light on for a engine misfire.
