I'm a little upset about this one. I took my 2021 RAM 3500 in for "perform service" message on the dash, and the dealer quoted me $4,000 in repairs! I'm going to DIY for about $350!

Look in your owners manual and you'll find the only thing that needed to be changed was the CCV filter. Ram did away with the requirement to clean the EGR filter when they started using DEF, 2013 as I recall, and the "67,500" service actually jumps up to an even higher interval with the 5th Gens I believe. The actual service manuals have the correct data but the dealers always seem to go with the requirement on the older configurations.

There's no EGR filter. You are referring to the EGR cooler which really gets clogged up on pre-DEF cummins (pre 2013).

@@jamesvuxta8723 2013+ trucks run fewer EGR cycles because they run more SCR/DEF so they don’t clog as often. The EGR maintenance interval mileage is a lot longer on DEF trucks. Therefore newer trucks should have fewer EGR issues.

FYI, chrysler tech here. The "perform service" only means that you need a ccv filter. You don't need the egr cleaning until 120k miles, and even then, they are usually perfectly fine and don't benefit from the service.

Newer has never been better. I was told by my Grandfather to buy used but cared for as opposed to spending big bucks for new when I was 12 years old. I am 75 now and practiced what he preached except for a new Pontiac GrandPrix in 1997, which was a lemon, and suffered a $6500.00 cash loss.

The only real issue with this gen Duramax are the injectors. Keep your eye on the oil and oil level as the diesel can go down into the crankcase when this problem presents… but otherwise it sounds like you’re winning.
@themichaelcreed

Unless the 2003 Duramax was fitted with an aftermarket exhaust break, you have a lesser truck. Less HP, Less torque, possibly less towing capability. Of course you swapped that for less payments too. For me, the exhaust break is the winner. I can go down a 7& grade towing 11k lbs, set the cruise at 55 and hardly if ever have to touch the brakes. Exhaust brake magic.

I'd buy a Cummins any day, over the other 2 V8 Diesels? After working on a P.O.S. 6.0 Power-Choke, that was done at 150K, the Cummin's is much easier to access main components, and more reliable? A V8 configuration is not as balanced as a straight in-line 6 cylinder? I still think the old 7.3L Power-Stroke is the best diesel Ford ever had?

My 2016 Ram 3500 is very expensive in maintenance. I do the fuel filters myself ($80) in parts. Oil changes I get done at Jiffy lube because it’s just a pain and messy. The dealer charged me about $1500 fir the EGR cleaning. My heater core went bad. That was $2800 including changing the AC evaporator because why not. The dash is already taken apart and it’s a $180 part. I go through tires every two years because the truck is so heavy, it just eats them up. I’ve tried Toyo, BFG and Michelin. I’m doing the egr myself next time thanks to this video.

The maintenance schedule does NOT require the cleaning of the EGR and cooler. Instead of selling your truck it is good to do the maintenance yourself to save money. I’ve changed my leaking plastic Y coolant to aluminum, oil and fuel filter change, crankcase filter, and my turbo actuator myself. You still need to do the oil change on your differentials, transmission and filter, transfer case which the dealer did for me in an hour. They had a special for $1000 which still seemed high but didn’t want to mess with my Aisen transmission on my 2014 Ram 3500 4x4. I do still drive my 1996 Dodge 2500 as a daily driver with 389000 and California does NOT require smog testing pre 1997. I installed a 2013 seat which makes it very comfortable. I love the exhaust brake on my 4th gen for towing but try to drive my old faithful 12 valve which I still love that I bought new. I bought the Banks Ram intake and will try to do that myself and clean the EGR at that time. My friend lost his engine to the grid heater bolt failure at 120,000 miles. Beware! I did have to change the killer dowl pin on my 1996 12 valve so always something….

I would definitely look at the older workhorses. Vehicle prices are dropping, so too will the trade in values

Diesels are NOT cheap! I’ve got a 2016 ecoDiesel….and early on, she was expensive as well. But the last few years, she’s been a good rig. Thanks for the education…. Also, the EPA requirements force dealers to follow the procedures. If they don’t it will effect their relationship with big brother!

Another great interesting. I'd definitely buy the older truck. I'm not mechanically inclined at all but I know wth newer the car the less I want to have to do to it at all.

Great video! You are very clear and to the point. Inspired me to save some money.You mentioned that you "torqued" down the EGR when you reinstalled. Are there actual torque specs or were you speaking in more general terms?
