How well will Tennis Balls work as a pressure tank fill for the ram pump? In this video we test out that idea. Turns out not so bad.

I've been down the ram pump rabbit hole over the last few days, and I can't help but wonder why (short of the cost), a small commercially built pressure tank wouldn't work in place of inner tubes and tennis balls and pool noodles.. They're built specifically with a diaphragm to do exactly what you're doing, and they're safe for potable water.. I can't imagine what water tastes like after it's run past a trio of tennis balls... :) Regardless, thanks so much for introducing me to these pumps. I've been contemplating ways to move water over some pretty long distances on my property, and this will definitely do the trick!

you should try adding a bladder type expansion tank to this system so you can pre charge your tank with above atmospheric pressures.

To drill a tiny hole, 1/32 in, just below the check valve under the pressure tank would remedy the air-loss in the pressure tank entirely. I know it is somewhat counter--intuitive, but it works. You will see water squirting out, but every time, just before the valve acts, it sucks in a small amount of air into the pipe. My grandpa used an old hydraulic ram pump some 40 years ago and he explained that this little hole was crucial to the function, otherwise the pressure tank would lose its air and the pumping would stop.

The water level went down because the air volume increased. I bet tiny bubbles in the standpipe introduced more air into the chamber. You had delivery shut off, so they couldn't escape that way. The pressure seemed about the same as when it had more water volume, so that backs up that there had to be more total air introduced.

My guess is that the water level went down without losing pressure (as noted when you opened the drain valve) because dissolved air in the water escaped and filled the top of the pressure tank. There is a lot of air in water.

Boosts aren't as wasteful though, but yeah, the concept is there. It's always amazed me how efficient boosts are though, you're shorting the supply. But when you think about it more, as you're modulating for how long it happens and so it averages out the Cu and Fe losses, which come way down to a pretty small level. Doesn't work for water haha.

I think you should consider putting a shrader valve on the top cap of your pressure tank, you could incorporate a gauge in the same plumbing to check air pressure.. You could release the pressure when experimenting to make it less stressful and wearing on the ball balve. Also, you could experiment with injecting air pressure into the pressure tank besides the amount that is passively there at the start by the size and shape of the tank itself. You could add air volume with a bicycle pump. Not that it is needed, but in the spirit of experimentation, it would give you the effective results of a longer or wider pressure tank, while keeping the size as it is. This might be useful for instalations that do not have the vertical room for the tall riser. Just some random thoughts. Great video, oh, and Ive asked before, but havent heard back WHY USE PRESSURE TANK FILLER AT ALL? It seems unnecessary to me. What is the advantage. The air is already there. Databyter

Well that settles that. Thanks! Glad to have a visual.. that explains why the tennis balls didn't do very well. Anything that doesn't hold up the "volume area" for the PC.. effectively isn't there as air pressure space. Keep up the great tests Seth! When you read deep into ram pump design.. all the old school stuff says use a snifter valve and infuse air into the pc with that. I have been wanting to for a while.. but that hole size is critical. I have some ideas though. cheers!

Yes the hole size is very important! the couple times I have tried did not go so well. I have a small valve used in a Cpap machine. I wonder if that will work? It would allow some water out but I am not sure that it would allow enough air to enter the pump to replenish what is lost. This test is on the list for the summer if I can find time to make it.

The increased air is from the tennis balls expelling there pressure. Tennis balls come pressurized. This is why they are in an air tight can.
@MrAndrewbrake
@MrAndrewbrake 4 жыл бұрын
There was far more air in that pressure tank than was ever in the balls, and the balls still had pressure when taken out. Most likely explanation is bubbles in the water being pushed into the pressure tank. The displaced water in the pressure tank would have been escaping back out the one way valve (you will always lose some water as the valve closes)

Little late but have you tried a equalizer cylinder? It's a hydraulic cylinder with a loose piston in it and gets pressurized on both sides thus creating a suppression reservoir to supplement volume and not starve a system. Sold as a race engine preludes but doesn't matter what you use on either side of piston ie: oil,air,coolant

Nothing beats good old Air. Anything you use. Tennis balls, Inner tubes, Pool noodles all have air as the main displacement component, Unless the the object is solid pocket less material. If anything you use has drag that is grater then and compression rate that is lower then air it only lowers your efficiency. The more the object can compress and the faster it can be compressed and expanded the more efficient your system is anything that takes up space that cant be compressed or expanded causes you to lose volume that could have been used for compression and expansion. A taller pipe is a better if you want more pressure. If you want to test this yourself I would strongly recommend getting a pressure gauge that shows you highest pressure and current pressure. Watch the needle bounce between its low high and common psi. The more deflection and higher pressure the gauge has the more efficient your system is.

The answer to the accumulation of air in the ballast tube is; Air dissolved in the water is released into the ballast chamber during the pulsing action (Pressure cycles) and cannot escape thus forcing the water out the bottom.

The water level did went back down due to the accummulation of air in the tank. You see, there are tiny air bubbles that go with the water or air dissolved in the water. I predicted as I watched your video that the moment you open the drain valve, there will be too much air that will come out, and, obviously there was! Thanks for sharing your wonderful video! And you can press air. It becomes hot. The reason that when the feed valve that what's the water go to where you're pumping it to? Keeps the water level up in the pressure tank is because you have a fresh flow of cool water and the cool water is absorbing the heat from the pressurized air. Keeping it cool with that valve off but still building pressure in the rest of the system. The air eventually gets hot enough that it builds enough air pressure that it pushes the water level down. Plus there was probably a very very slight leak and one of those things, but not nearly enough flow to allow the water in the pressure tank to pull the heat off of the air in the pressure tank so the reason you actually saw the water level go down in the pressure tank is because you were no longer able to dissipate the heat built up in the pressure rised air with having a good flow of water warm and cold going into and leaving the pressure tank that's why when the feed valve is open the pressure tank builds up to a certain level and stays at about that specific level and when you close it but leaves the ramp pump running. After a period of time the pressure tank will be full of water but then eventually it will look like it's empty and has no water. Realistically another thing that was probably happening is the air pressure built up so much because it got so hot that even though the valve was properly cycling it was probably feeding water from the pressure tank and water from the pressure tank since there was not enough flow of freshwater. Going through the pressure tank to pull the heat off of the pressed air in the pressure tank actually caused the pressure tank to back feed through the valve which is a completely possible and plausible reason that after 2 days the pressure tank was almost empty of water because the air had reached such a high temperature and high pressure that it had more pressure than the ramp pump could produce except for keeping a tiny bit of water in the pressure tank again with the feed valve open feeding water to wear. You are trying to get water too using the pump. There is enough flow of fresh water into the pressure tank that it was pulling the heat off of the compressed air in the pressure tank without having enough flow of fresh cool water. In there, the pressure was able to build up. Most likely the water got warm in the pressure tank as well and the water evaporated into steam in that case, which is why you still had a full pressure tank, but it was a combination of compressed air and steam at that point.

Considering that tennis balls are kept in a pressurized tube prior to use implies that they're permeable to air and hence over time in that application would become water logged. So they're not good for long term fill.

The water level went back down because of the accumulated air pressure... every time the valve slams shut and then opens, it's sucking in little gulps of air... that would be something to measure... need to get your pressure gauge on it now...

What we don't see, is how these things you put in there effect the actual operation. How many feet higher does this pump water? What is the benefit of one thing over the other? Why the bicycle inner tube? What pressure should the bladder be at? What if you had a way to pre-pressurize the chamber? What would that change? Let's say, with nothing in the tank, the air reaches 150psi at normal operation (totally guessing) what would we put in there that would resist that or be a better spring?

fresh tennis balls are pressurized to 27 psi (1.8 bar), that's why they come in a pressurized can. 7:08 you can see that the tennis balls are still crushed, so your pressure tank is working properly. the lack of water in the tank is due to air pressure forcing the water back through the check valve. likely the air built up in there over the course of two nights when it was cool, then when the sunlight hit it the air expansion overpowered the waste valve (so the kinetic energy from the ram pipe gets soaked up just from trying to pop the check valve open, which allows the motion of the check valve to actually pump the water in reverse). it would have been interesting to see how much higher the pressure was when you turned it on than it is normally. 8:00 when you opened the delivery valve the compressed air in the pressure tank started pushing all the water in the delivery hose uphill replacing the water in the hose with air, which is why all the water drained out of the pressure tank right away. if you'd allowed it to play out, the air left in the pressure tank would have cooled off quickly (reducing the volume) because of the rapid decompression and the introduction of cold water. all the extra air would have eventually escaped out of the delivery hose as it does in a bladderless tank. you'd have had a spluttery feed for a little while, but I'd guess it would even out after just a few minutes. if you did this decompression process gradually (by burping the delivery valve), when you finished, your pump would be running at just about max output temporarily. EDIT: It's also worth noting that air expansion is how bombs work. If your materials aren't up to the task, that pressure tank could definitely explode. Don't get blinded by shrapnel, or worse.
@ericroot8475

look at the condensation on the pressure tank at 6:08 vs 7:08. the water in the tank was actually warm (I imagine from a combination of sunlight and compression) when you observed the weird behavior.

Cool video. If you are trying to form a better accumulator, you could simply pre-charge the tank with air... you are looking for enough air in the tank so the water level is at about 2/3-3/4 full and it lowers down to about 1/4-1/3 at minimum pressure. Put a pressure relief valve on the output so the water you draw off passes thru it, with a spring that stops the flow at the minimum pressure to keep you from loosing the air charge. As you saw in your demo, aireated water in the input can add air volume to the accumulator, y0u will have to adjust the water level/pressure relationship occasionally...

I’m thinking your original design with the bike tire is the best. Maybe experiment with different initial tire pressures? What is the final goal here? I've never heard of a ram pump before today and I've watched a few of your videos on them now. In my ignorance I thought of a question. If you remove the PVC pipe (the one you put the tennis balls in) and replaced it with something much bigger, like a small propane tank, would the added air volume increase water pressure at the end of the line?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. That's a valid question. Pressure tanks basically smooth out the output. Adding a larger tank does not increase the output. The output is based on the input head pressure. The pressure tank can only build to the pressure of the input head pressure. That's a mouthful haha

Ok might I render a suggestion that you try a 1¼" pvc pipe fitted with test plugs = to ¼ the size of your expansion tank. Reason for the test plugs, instead of caps, because they fit to the inside diameter of the pipe, not over the outside. Also think that if you were to put a Schrader valve into the top cap you could pressure the expansion tank to about 10 psi.

If I understand the point of this, all you are trying to do is to create a barrier between the air and water. The tennis balls seemed to work fine. You just need to fill the entire tube with them. don't worry about them being crushed, because that is what is supposed to happen. It's just like when the original air gets compressed into a few inches of space at the top of the cylinder. I think that the inner tube would work better, though. You just need to place it in the cylinder first, and then inflate it as much as possible. You want to displace all of the air. Don't inflate it and then try to squeeze it in. And again, the fact that it gets crushed is fine.

Depending on your water source, you could have a bit of dissolved air or microbubbles in your drive line which come out of solution in the pressure tank and increased the mass of air in your pressure tank. Alternatively, you may have a small leak after the waste valve which is allowing air into your system. One way or another, air was introduced into the pressure tank over the course of 3 days.

you cant have air before the release valve, this only works because water doesnt compress, the kinetic energy of 1kg of water falling 10 m can be used to raise 0.5kg 20 m. those air bubbles would compress and expand some of the pressure. what the guy could do is stuff a sealed balloon in the tank.

Wow. Great video. You could mount a hose pressure guage between the tank and the bleed valve. Could you try the tube with much more pressure, ex. If tube build 35psi. Could you get 40 psi in the tube? Thanks. You are building a great library of knowledge for everyone.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 5 жыл бұрын
Oh good idea. I have that hose guage that would fit there well. I think that is a good place to start reading pressure. I won't even have to take the deliver puoe off. I am not sure about building more pressure in the tank than the ram pump can make. I would need a non return valve to add that pressure.
@MalmoeSnapphane
@MalmoeSnapphane 4 жыл бұрын
Most likely your water level got down due to the order you closed the valves, you let alot of air into the delivery pipe and I think that is the reason to the drop in water level, air can be compressed not water. If you would have left it working a bit longer I think it would have settle back to normal. You should close the valves in the order of 1. Feed, 2. Delivertý and last (3) open the dump valve.

Test #1, no pressure tank just cap it, Test #2 pressure tank with no rebounder in it, just the air space, test #3 #4 #5 #6 different rebounders. Lots of designs that do not use a pressure tank to 'even' the flow through the delivery line allowing the delivery line itself to accumulate/release pressure, especially when a rubber garden hose is used. The pressure tank filled with air from the tiny bubbles of air dissolved in the water. with the delivery valve closed, a small amount of water exchanged each time the spring valve opened but most of the water sat still, allowing it to release the dissolved air. It's the same thing that makes ice cubes have that cloudy white center, air bubbles. With the delivery valve open, the water in the pressure chamber is constantly changing and absorbing air, slowly stealing the air from the pressure cylinder until there is no air gap left. That's why pressure bottles and anti-hammer valves have a seal between the wet side and the air cushion.
@jllaine
@jllaine 4 жыл бұрын
Also, the pressure bottle providing rebound pressure works better if the pressure bottle is 'in line' with the spring check valve, maximizing the water's inertial path into the pressure chamber before the spring valve closes.

Experiment with different gases in the inner tube, for example hydrogen, biomethane, & the gas produced through the process of gasification, helium,The Deep Voice Gas - SULFUR HEXAFLUORIDE (SF6), pure oxygen, pure carbon monoxide, if there's a difference pure carbon dioxide, are the first ones that come to my mind for you to experiment with inside an inner tube, to see if there's a difference, if one compressor is more than another, or if one leaks out more than another.
@SmokeJensensJunction
@SmokeJensensJunction 5 жыл бұрын
@land_to_house, King Cobra's Den Has good point and idea 💡 different gases compress at different rates as well as for example laytex helium balloons that have high float in them last longer than a regular latex helium balloon. So maybe adding some of that stuff I believe they call ultra-high float, or some of that green slime they use to fix and patch tires and inner tubes, (these are just the first two that come to mind) in the inner tube with the different gases that little king Cobra's Deen suggested May have even more effects and differences. I know there are other things that do a similar job, offhand I just don't know the name of any of them.

Why does the pressure tank need any fill, isn’t the compressed air itself enough? Why do you like the Stainless steel valve better?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 4 жыл бұрын
Over time the air in the pressure tank defuses into the water and the tank becomes water logged. In large commercial ram pumps there is a snifter valve that replenishes a small bit of air with each cycle. The tank fill helps to keep an air space in the tank at all times. .... The SS valves are stronger and do not wear as fast. The pump cycles around 30 million times a year and that can cause the brass to wear a ring in the flap.

100 videos on ram pumps !!!! Guess I'll have to allocate more time. I really like the clear pressure pipe so we can see what is going on and I saw in another of your videos that you added a pressure gauge on the pressure pipe. I think I've missed the initial video that described why you are adding more compressible medium inside the pressure pipe and the benefit that that gives. Interesting that air started to occur after a while in the pressure pipe - would that indicate that the tennis balls or bicycle tubes may not be necessary? Did you experiment with different heights and shapes for the pressure pipe? Some designs show more of a big round bulb than a pressure pipe.

For the tube, use co2, not air. Air will leak no matter what because it's not a single molecule and unstable, but co2 is great for bike tires. Ask anyone in the Tour De France, no air in their tires. That pump is great for gorilla gardeners too, and would eliminate the need to wear a path that can be seen from above. That would have been handy before they legalized my garden here, medicinal of course...

My theory how to create a ramp pump with less exit of water to the check valve when the pressure back it up. I think how the design and the making of pressure valve that close the pressure tank thats the secret of it. And learned how to observe tha air level of the pressure tank its because the air Is important of it. It must have check the air level above the pressure tank. You must have a lettle bit of air inside the pressure thank to have an effective release of check valve.
