32:54 yea thats the popular interpretation of the ending. But there's a whole another angle to it. Why Ram is so great and arguably considered the best and the most 'human' avatar of Lord Vishnu. The ideal king or ideal human (maryada purushottam). He didnt ask Sita to test her chastity because he didnt trust her. He trusted Sita like his shadow. Knew about her love and devotion more than anyone else. Even after all that if she had to go through the trials, it was was because to Ram, Sita being his wife or Ayodhya's queen assumes no higher significance than the thoughts of the people of his kingdom. He could have easily dismissed those people or even punished them. But then what would it say about him other than he was being selfish and was acting on the privilege of being a king. Its a deed, a sacrifice only Ram can make. Its the same what happened when Kaikeyi asked Dashrath to banish him. He willingly obeyed. There he was the perfect son. Here he is the perfect king. To a king each and everyone in his kingdom, is equal. Be his wife, his kin or a commoner.

Sita’s trial did not take place in original Ramayan by Valmiki. It was a later addition centuries after this, but even that was not on the will of Ram, but people of Ayodhya demanding it, in that version Ram himself submerges himself in water and gives up life because she asked Sita to go through trial and sent her to wilderness with his two children.

They stopped the four Sanat Kumaras , the celebate child sages's entry into 'Vaikuntha', Vishnu's abode and ridiculed them , so.. infuriated Sanat Kumaras cursed Jay and Vijay to be born as mortals on earth whom only Vishnu can liberate from this birth & death cycle, the liberation part was comprised of two options : either they should take births on earth as Vishnu's devotees for 9 lives or ; take birth as demons or vile persons as Vishnu's enemy for 3 lives.. They chose the latter to quickly join their Lord. And so they took 3 births each slain by an incarnation of Vishnu ... 1. Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu were killed by Lord Vishnu's 'Varaha' (3rd avtar) and Lord 'Narsingh' (4th avtar) respectively. 2. Ravana and Kumbhakarna , the antagonists of Ramayana killed by Lord Rama (7th incarnation) 3. Shishupala and Dantavakra were slain by Lord Krishna (8th avtar) and then at last after completing the curse cycle they went back and joined the Lord in his abode .

So when they returned people started to gossip about Sita if she remained faithful to Ram & if not she doesn't deserve to be queen. Thus Sita had to prove the innocence to people. According to Ami Ganaratra and her research on Valmiki's Ramayan, Ravana was a serial molester of women. Events like Ravana molesting Vedavati ( she self immolated herself after Ravana defiled her) and Ravana defiling Rambha are some of the examples that clearly etch out his character. Ravana was cursed afterwards by Rambha that if he tried to force himself on any woman, his head would explode into pieces which would never comeback together. Hence he is subsequently fearful of this curse and behaves in that way as depicted in the movie. Spacecrafts are mentioned in Ramayan. One of them accused his wife of cheating and when the kings court were hearing the case the man said "I aint Ram to accept you even when you stayed with other man" Hence Ramji had to choose between Duty and Love.. and he was bound by Duty.. thus to restore the faith of his people in their king and queen.. Yes Sita had to give test for proving her purity, when the people of Ram's kingdom ask that. In the pressure of the natizen of his kingddom Ram ask Sita to give the test, as Sita gave birth to two twin boys Lav and Kush. And yes ! As a strong woman she took it as insults. After giving the fire test (Agni-parikhsha) and passing her purity test she went to Patal (under the soil) by spliting the floor as she felt insulting and disrespectful.

"Trail by Fire - Agni Pariksha" is mentioned in the Yuddha Kand of Valmiki Ramayana. There is deeper meaning and more rationality behind these things than we usually think. Goddess Sita could have easily gone back with Hanuman Ji. Hanuman ji would have easily liberated the incarcerated prisoners in Lanka. She didn't go back with Hanuman ji so that her Husband Lord Ram would perform his duty and rescue his wife. No one henceforth would question Lord Ram's capabilities and intent as a warrior and a husband. Similarly the " Agni Pariksha" is also done voluntarily by Goddess Sita. This is just to clear any doubts that anyone could have on their Queen being in Lanka with a Demon. These are more symbolic, as per the traditions of the time, and intune with the Dharma or duty of a King or Queen of the land. Even Lord Ram does ask Goddess Sita that he did his duty by coming to Lanka and killing Ravana. But now it is upto Goddess Sita if she wants to return back with him as he doesn't know if she wants to or not. Obviously, Goddess Sita is overjoyed and wants to return, but Lord Ram doesn't force his will and behaves as a true noble King. The Kings Dharma supercedes the Dharma of a Husband. Same is true for a Queen.

About Vivian's question regarding Ravan's backstory...that are many versions of it. The ones I remember were once there were 4 Kumaras, who were the sons of Brahma who once visited Vaikunth, the endless sea, the abode of Vishnu, they were stopped by 2 gatekeepers called Jay and Vijay. The Kumaras got angry that they were stopped on the door and cursed the gatekeepers to be born as mortals in every yugs. The gatekeepers came running to Vishnu for help, Vishnu told them that it would be his avatars that would free them of their mortal beings in each yugs. In Satyug, they were born as hiranyaksh and Hiranyakashyp (brothers) who were killed by Varaha (3rd) and Narsinh (4th) avatars of Vishnu. In their next iteration in Tretayug, they were born as Ravan and Kumbhakaran (brothers again) killed by Ram (7th) and in their 3rd iteration, they were Shishupal and Dantvakr who were killed by Krishna (8th). Back to Ravan, he was a big devotee of Shiv and before becoming a king, he was a Rishi focusing on meditation and knowledge. The description of his ten heads mean he had the knowledge and the capacity to implement stuff with the mind 10 times that of a normal human. He defeated his half brother Kuber, God of wealth to win Lanka from him and then started on his path of disturbing peace everywhere. He was cursed once that if he forced himself on anyone, he would die right then. So he did steal Sita but he kept his words that only when she accepts him, he will make a move. That's another reason why he was not concerned if the war has reached his doorsteps as he could show Sita the proof that her husband is dead by actually killing Ram. He thought that would convince Sita to accept him. A small titbit..Ravan imparted his knowledge and wisdom to Lakshman on his deathbed about politics, culture, statehood, karm, dharm and lot more. He died as a teacher to Lakshman

Exactly. Also, people often don't get why Shri Ram did that. He forced that trial upon Mother Sita at the behest of his own subjects, he himself became the subject of ridicule of his subjects. Had he not listened to his subjects and "protected" Mother Sita from that trial, his subjects would have continued to slander Mother Sita. By forcing her to go through that trial, he become the magnet for the slander of his subjects, redirecting the attention and the ridicule of the subjects from his wife onto himself. Because in the eyes of his subjects, once Mother Sita was forced to go through that trial, she became an object of their sympathy and the mirth and ridicule which was directed towards her till then was now redirected towards Shri Ram for forcing her poor wife through such a trial (even though it was the subjects themselves who were demanding it). _Wait, but doesn't that make the subjects total hypocrites? But they were cursed to be born as humans. Ravana's backstory is simply that he did penance of multiple gods, got boons from them, got stronger with each boon, and with this his desire for power grew (his power and the desire for power was already messing with his rational thinking. He already had all the knowledge of the world since childhood.). So he did a penance of the creator god Brahma to get a boon of immortality but Brahma told him that he can't give him this boon, so instead Ravana asked him to bless him with the boon that he could not be killed by gods, asuras, other rakshasas, serpents, etc. basically he listed all the beings that live in the world except humans and some forest animals. So Brahma granted him this boon and Ravana became happy that he tricked Brahma into making him immortal (because his thinking was that if the divine beings can't kill him, how can humans and animals? After all, he being a Rakshasa is anyway more powerful than them). With this boon with him, he conquered the earth, the heavens, the underworlds, and defeated all the gods and divine beings and took their wealth and power and became the master of all. All this power got to his head and he became an arrogant tyrant. So he started tormenting everyone on earth and on divine realms, abducted women and raped them. It's the power and the lust for it that made Ravana as the evil rakshasa, and made his thinking as depicted in Ramayan.
