I have nerve damage in my hands and dupuytren's contracture that was resulting in constant pain in my hands. I was inspired by a friend two years ago to paint a little bit every day. In a few weeks the daily pain started going away, its mostly gone now. It has been so effective as a physical therapy that my neurologist put a note in my chart instructing me to paint miniatures. I decided to track what I painted last year and it was 206 miniatures from small to large vehicles. A few months have low numbers but that does not bother me as I was working on larger projects those months. It takes a lot longer to paint Ghazghkull then a Gretchin. I also found a great local club to play with, so in a very happy place with my hobby.

One thing I’ve heard is that when you announce your goals to others and get their reaction your brain gives you a portion of the serotonin you would’ve gotten for finishing the project itself. For some people telling people is as good as doing it… so we learn that once we’ve said it we don’t need to do it anymore…

I've heard (and experienced) this myself. Maybe it's not the same for everyone, but if anyone is similar: don't share your weightloss goals, don't show people progress until it's done, etc.

@@trisbane4086 i mean, don't share your weight loss goals for other reasons, too (e.g. it can be extremely triggering for some people). but yeah.

i wonder if there's a happy medium here (between sharing all your goals in detail, to lots of people, and not saying anything about them at all). or maybe it's just that i've never really experienced one end of the scale (rarely make "goals" and have never shared them to begin with) so don't know for sure that it wouldn't work for me, either? as i say, "oversharing" of goals hasn't ever negatively impacted me (because i lack the experience of ever having done it), but i _do_ think that the opposite pole has been detrimental to my ability to stick to goals (albeit for slightly different reasons). i can definitely see how tricking your brain into giving you a serotonin hit for merely _talking_ about your goals can be counterproductive, but also (ime) _not_ talking about goals can remove an element of accountability which might be helpful in retaining motivation-if i make a list and i'm the only person who knows about it, who will notice when none of it gets done? (obviously, different strokes for different folks, ymmv, etc.. but i think it's good to be aware there's another extreme on the continuum of "telling people about your goals" that might be just as deleterious (to some people, at least) as the other. of course, it would be nice if we _were_ always perfectly accountable to ourselves, never needed validation or encouragement from others-or perhaps never felt afraid of letting others down-but i don't think i know many people like that. it's probably okay to say "this year i'm going to break down my hobby projects into tasks that can be completed within a week each", without going into too much detail about what each of those projects will be)

Discovering your channel has been a huge inspiration for me to actually start the hobby myself. I originally thought that I wouldn't be accepted in the hobby space as a trans person, but seeing a fellow trans person find success in this sphere made me really happy and excited to dive in. And as it turns out, once I was given the motivation to start looking into it, there's a lot more queer friendly spaces in this hobby than I expected. Now, miniature painting has been a huge source of joy for me, and has helped me out of the large depressive rut I was in after finishing high school, and not having *anything* to do before going off to college.

I only play MCP, and I am not a compulsive collector, so my “pile of shame” is usually very small and also something I bought specifically because I want to paint it. But getting into a positive mindset is huge. The little plastic people/buildings don’t have any feelings so they won’t get mad at you if they are not painted

My primary motivation is paint-to-play - The problem to that is that a lot of players moved out of the hobby or moved out of town. All that remaines are 40k tournament players (the people are cool, their hobby approach is not my cup) - But i found a group of people this year who play star wars legion - so there is hoping to finally tackle my rebels as well.
@YanniCooper
@YanniCooper 4 ай бұрын
It might be worth talking to the tournament players and seeing if there any of them (or their friends) who might be interested in Narrative play. With just a few players you could do a Crusade or Path To Glory league and some competitive players may find they enjoy more narrative play (which I'm assuming is /your/ cup of tea, apologies if not) as much or more than competitive. Doing an escalation league (start at low points totals, and increase to a full army over the course of the league) can also be a great way to build an army. Though of course, don't limit yourself to just GW products, most other minis games can lend themselves to an escalation league, and I'm sure there are games with better narrative campaign rules out there.

I find discussions about motivation and, I guess, project management within miniatures really interesting. I've definitely heard people with other hobbies talk about project backlog and the struggles around it but no one seems to beat themselves up about it like miniature wargamers. It's meant to be a fun hobby, it's meant to be a relaxing distraction, so why do we all get so stressed about it 😅

You put in words pretty much what I was doing this whole year (except 1 week limit). Hobbystreak and Hobby Golf never worked for me. My brain is just not wired that way. But sorting my hoard into projects did miracles for me. As for not talking about plans - it is a real brain thing. Talking about goals releases nearly as much dopamine as actually achieving them, so brain files away those tasks as 'completed', and it can be really hard to start working on them. Your brain thinks it's already done. You aready got the reward. So why work more? Hope you have a happy new year too!🎄

I typically keep myself motivated to finish individual projects by not allowing himself to have more than a single one on my painting desk. I can't assemble and paint my Drukhari Wyches until I've finished my Fallen squad, for example.

I think voicing your goals out loud (at least to an audience) turns it into a "have to" rather than a "want to" and this makes it tedious rather enjoyable. There is no reason you have to commit to projects and timelines to us. It's actually fun to be surprised by what comes out in each video.

I made a commitment to paint or at least do something related to the hobby (kit bash, brain storm, organize, 3d print etc...) 2 to 4 hours each work day and on my days off as long as i can stand it lol. Working 12s makes it tough but you are one of the ones that keeps me on course and for that I thank you again. ❤

One thing I've done is saved a few larger boxes from combat patrols and the like to serve as my "Hobby Buckets". As I was moving apartments, I consolidated all of the Sisters of Battle sprues into my Sisters of Battle Combat Patrol box, and worked through it little by little. At the moment, I've got about 7 Battle Sisters on my desk being batch painted, and the only sprue left has 5 repentia in it. Which tells me.... maybe I can afford to get some more sisters kits - as long as i don't exceed the capacity of that Combat Patrol box. While it does place that sense of "obligation" on the hobby pile, I think it also leaves me free to break boxes down into smaller projects. I can buy a box of Battle Sisters, paint up half of them, and if the other half isn't doing it for me that day, I can leave them at the bottom and grab something else to work on. And if I find the box cluttered with too many half-squads, well... then it's not too bad to power through a half squad to clear up some space.

Great video Dana love your system and the way you think about time investment vs reward. Here’s a fun fact - there have been studies that show the more you tell people about what you are going to do rather than just doing it, the less likely you are to do it. This is because when people tell you what a great idea something is, it gives you a micro release of endorphins. We are wired to crave those micro endorphin releases over the much larger and more satisfying endorphin release we get from actually finishing a project. So like Gandalf always says ‘keep it secret, keep it safe’

The idea of painting the Marvel set as one “project” was a great idea! and I like the thought of separating things into categories - like the store, projects, etc. I may not do the same things, but I do plan to use this thought of separating in innovative ways to get through some of my “projects”.

I've found a lot of similar conclusions and solutions for my own productivity. Except the store and projects aren't clearly separated. It's just a book shelf of untouched boxes and a shelf of boxes with missing parts used in kitbashes/mixed up display pieces. Also don't feel bad about the announcing projects = it won't get done thing. That's actually a well known phenomena that happens because you get a similar reward for telling people about what you're doing as you get for actually doing it, and once you've gotten the reward it's less exciting to try getting it again through doing

Thanks, Dana, for sharing the life issues inside the painting hobby. I've been inspired by Archon Studios from Poland to paint their terrain, scatter, and miniatures. But that has resulted in a barrage of plastic, with more on the way! Since I'm not very skillful nor brisk at painting, but I really do enjoy it, your example of ways to make things manageable is quite inspiring and pragmatic. This video is a great gift for the new year! (Now if I can figure out how to install the airbrush system my kids gave me for Christmas...)

Hobby Golf sounds like it's based on Code Golf, which is itself a generalisation from Perl Golf. The reason it worked so well originally is that Perl is an *_extremely_* terse language where it's possible to write useful programs in just a few dozen characters. And, unlike miniatures of varying size and complexity, every character typed in a text string has the same weight.

This year, I learned 2 great lessons about my backlog that tie into this theme. 1) if I buy on a whim I can paint on a whim. I don't need to do all the project from start to finish. I can do another model or project, in the middle. 2) do something with the model or project. Whether it be show of the model to some friends, or use it in a game. It helps you feel way more accomplished to not only have done but give it a purpose too. It helps motivate you to do the next one

If it makes you feel any better, it's an actual psychological phenomenon that talking about projects you want to do decreases the likelihood that you'll actually finish. One theory I've heard is that you get the rush of talking about the great thing without the hard work of doing the great thing. It short-circuits your brain and you end up unmotivated since you already got the dopamine hit.

Painting stuff "good enough" is great. For any miniatures, but board game minis especially, if you do play a few times and then come back to improve the paint jobs I'd suggest a gentle wash with slightly soapy water to get rid of the finger oils before doing the "extra mile" painting as otherwise it can make it hard for paint to stick (same is true if you play a few times with unpainted minis.)

Thank you for this video. Some helpful insights indeed. I remember reading a book about the issue with announcing plans/ projects/ ideas and then never actually finishing them. As far as I recall the author said that because someone receives enough positive feedback on the announcement that there's no need to go further. You collect all the dopamine with the announcement Something like that. But maybe I'm completely wrong. For me it makes sense.

Just did my own end of year video, it kinda spiraled into something too long and boring, but I had the idea a year ago to have the following goal: Paint 2 models for every 1 that I acquire. This worked fairly well for me, although certainly not perfect. I found that because it wasn't a total ban on buying new models, I was able to pick up some of the stuff I really wanted over the year, and that got me involved in painting, and once you get started painting you paint more. Or at least for me, it gets the ball rolling to paint more. It also, very importantly, gives me a big number at the end of the year for the number of models I painted, where in previous years, just counting my grey wall I have an ever increasing number of what I *haven't* painted. So it just feels better and you focus on the positives. I really enjoy this hobby and I got stuck in, painted loads, played loads an even wrote gamerules and lore.

Dana, I admire you. I do not always agree with you, but you are still amazing. This is just a Pile of Shame with more steps. If those additional steps help you work on it and not have negative emotions, those steps are a healthy addition. It is still a pile of shame you needed a shelf to handle. Still think you are amazing. :)

13:48 “I document the time that it takes me to do everything pretty rigorously”. Curious what your process is, and which tool(s) you use! I’ve experimented w spreadsheets and bullet journaling, for instance. Could make for a wide-reaching video! :)

seriously, though, Dana: you are an inspiration! i have been in and out of the hobby for a long time and have always struggled with… motivation, making time, and completing projects. as you say, the advice to break things down into smaller tasks etc. isn't really anything new to many of us, but it's refreshing to hear it from a hobbyist i have a lot of respect for-someone who _also,_ apparently, has grappled with some of the same issues that i have-and to hear more specific ideas about the things that have worked for them. you've given me some cool ideas to apply to my own hobby experience, and it's kind of… energising? soothing? encouraging?… to hear someone whose hobby output has always been impressive to me, talk about the problems they've had, and how they've overcome/are overcoming them. sorry for the rambling and slightly gushy comment. maybe the algorithm will like it, at least. thanks for making great Content™️ and i hope you're having a great 2024!

1500 straight days?! Wow, that's impressive, like even when you were sick? I wish I could do that, sadly work and real life get in the way.

Ryan (Brutalcities) makes the best terrain out there imo. I have a lot of terrain and they ususally are either very playable but ugly af or very pretty but very bad for gaming (no space to put minis, not blocking LOS, too small etc.). Brutal Cities terrain looks amazing is very high quality and extremely good for gaming super easy access for the interior very spacious to put minis everywhere big enough to block LOS in a meaningful way and really block off sections of the table.

The reason you lose motivation when you tell others about what you are GOING to do is because your brain treats that as equivalent to you having already done it. So you get the dopamine rush before the work starts. Similarly, it's why it's best not tell others about a new habit you are picking up (Gym, ECT)

I started playing warhammer games this past year and I learned that the people who play in my area are unusually toxic. They’ve stolen books, minis, and even 3D designs from me. So my takeaways from that is this… 1. Don’t play warhammer games, just paint models. 2. See 1. 3. See 2.

18:50 I think Dr. K brought this up, mostly about New Years Resolutions. Essentially you’ve cashed in on the good feelings with saying you’re going to do something without doing any of the work, so the work you do start on feels more like a chore than positive work. I went the exact opposite of you regarding the store. When we moved, my pile got packed into boxes, and they’re still in those boxes. I opened each, recorded what was in them in a spreadsheet, and that’s where they’ve been.
