@@Benjam311 I got no links for you, maybe someone else does. It is money either way you go. What you really save is time spent as you don't have to destroy your old base, and then redo the basing on the new one. You will also have the models on the old size for when you ever need them for another game. If you want so save money, but not time, you can always make your own and still have the flexibility of smaller bases. You can make it out of wood, cardboard, or plasticard. your choice. You can even use pre-made standard trays from some company like sarissa-precision, and just add spacers if you aren't too confident. A 5 wide, 4 deep tray for converting 20mm to 25mm would give you a 125*100mm footprint. Make the outer rim 2.5mm and the inner spacers 5 mm and you have a nice spacer tray.

My biggest argument against the FOMO marketing is the fact that GW has stated that these new box sets are being manufactured under their normal process and are not being advertised as "limited quantity". As a new player it is upsetting because I have no clue where to start or what will or won't be limited time only. I want to buy multiple factions; Wood Elves, High Elves, Empire, and some others if money permits. But if some are limited time only then I would obviously want to focus on those first. The lack of communication is very disheartening and gives me a lot of second thoughts. It's not like this game is cheap, and if I want to solo skirmish or against family, I need to make an even bigger risk. GW is not making the decision to buy in easy.

Couple of points. 1. The big impressive starter box for Horus Heresy, with all-new plastic models, is the big box they created for the second edition of the game, not for the initial release. So it was only after they had seen that the demand was there for it. This fits with what you say later about the current release being GW testing the waters, to see whether it is worth spending a lot of money on new plastic kits. 2. GW certainly haven't spent any money on new moulds for old plastic kits. That would be crazy for many reasons, not least of which being that the sprue layouts for the old kits were wildly space inefficient, and even if they were simply re-releasing the old models with new moulds, they'd definitely reorganise the sprues, but we know they haven't done that. And, besides, the new moulds are the greatest part of the cost of a new plastic kit, so if they were going to do that they might as well have their sculptors design new kits.

I don’t believe GW is looking for evidence on which way to go with their fantasy line. GW doesn’t expect fantasy to overtake AOs just like HH doesn’t overtake 40k. It’s just another game they’re releasing to make some money from because they must have come to the conclusion there is a strong enough want from the community to justify the cost of the project. They will just co exist and that’s good. Its not a mainline game and won’t be again but it’s awesome that it’s back and a lot of people are happier for it

I will say as a Heresy player, that was not a 2 player starter. They hedged their bets in the marketing, but the 450 point Spartan is kind of impossible to split, and gives away that they always intended it to be a one per player box, which is how it has mostly shaken out in my experience. I add this because I think it supports your thesis: we could see the Mark III armor Battlegroup as a real world example of the seccond wave you're talking about. It's a smaller box, but offers the same thing in principle, although the Heresy range is getting a lot more new models. Given that they are both the "prequel" games for their franchise, I think it's a fair comparrison, and Heresy has basically done what you're describing so far. It's just not as obvious because the armies are less distinct from eachother.

I think the problem with ToW primarily comes from the launch boxes. The old miniatures being sold at silly prices is one thing when they're standalone boxes like the Ushabti, but the box sets were supposed to be the chance to relaunch the game. Everything in them should have been new models like with every other launch box.
@chrisjones6792
@chrisjones6792 4 ай бұрын
@@user-ds8rj2vc4v I think the Warhammer Fantasy community, from my experience, is interested in the old sculpts. From what I've seen, Heresy players always saw Forgeworld Resin as a necessary evil, and are thrilled to see the new plastics, but the people who are still playing Fantasy are dedicated enough that they want the classic sculpts. Weather giving them what they want drives away new players and kills the game is an open question, but I don't mind the crowd that was alienated by AOS getting thrown a bone personally.

@Joooooooooe11
@Joooooooooe11 4 ай бұрын
The article that originally displayed that artwork said that the artwork was for the Old World, but that article was from so long ago, it's anyone's guess as to if there was a change in design or a turnoff in their development roadmap for Kislev. What adds to the complication is that those early Kislev articles came out right before Covid hit, so the fear is that things could have gotten derailed from the pandemic hitting and disrupting everything causing a hard turn in GW's plans which could result in Kislev falling by the wayside. Like Dana mentions in this video, GW have been tight lipped about a lot of stuff regarding Old World and they haven't said a peep about anything Kislev related since those initial articles. The general hope is that new factions like Kislev and possibly Cathay will show up with new model kits once all the core factions are released and everything caught up, but who knows.

As someone who played mainly Warhammer Fantasy since 1990 I bought the Tomb Kings box. I played AOS from the moment GW realised that a game like this is only playable when models get pointcosts. I for one am glad that Old World is back, but I am not dropping AOS (Flesheater Courts) completely. More likely, my Old World is gona be main, folowed by 40kNids, then AOS. My reason for this is simple. Old World is a true strategic wargame imo, wheras the other 2, like kill team or Mordheim (of old) or Warcry are tactical games. Sure they have an element of strategy, but giving 1 order with command points to turn the tide in battle brings down the battle to a 2 platoon level fight on each side versus all out war like in Battlefleed Ghotic or Apocalypse. In Old World, building your army, finetuning it, is just as important than nowadays is painting your AOS kill-team to get the mandatory bonuspoints for having a painted army. In Warhammer Fantasy, learning to properly move your bloks of troops was/is just as important as having some converted models in AOS. It came down to properly mastering YOUR army, because just copying a random persons army that did well at a GT would not guarenty that you could do the same. In the release idea you brought forth, well they may actualy do something like that and in the second year launch the missing armies. So for me now, I'll stick to Tomb Kings and maybe Wood Elves. But them WE have to wait untill I'm done painting my TK for my war against the unpainted gray is killing me. Not that I'm ever gona score points on painting, contrast paints and drybrushing, that is something even I can do... I realy hope Old World succeeds and hopefully not in stead of AOS, but my choise between them 2 clearly goes to WHFB now Old World.

I'm not expecting a AoS style of release for the old world, if they provide support as they continue to do I think it will cement its place as a specialist game. I'd hate it to be a verses battle between AoS and Old World, I have no interest in AoS but I've had my favourite tabletop game destroyed, so I'd never want that to be the case for anyone else, why would I. Legacy Vampires first, I have most of the army unbuilt ready to go, I'll expand it with some current purchases and order a boat load of bases from China. Then Orcs and Goblins I have the heart of the army, so I'll add to that and rebase it when they get their time to shine.. I need a good faction, still on the fence to which I'll choose, might wait to see what happens with Kislev and Cathey, I think Cathey seem to look very interesting to utilise and paint, very different from all other factions.. My largest current army is dark elves but they are going to sit on the shelf a while, it would take a huge amount of work to get them ready for the old world, its a very big army and I'm in no rush.. I brought all the core books already, and I'm eying tomb kings to be used in conjunction with my vampires, a force led my Arkhan the Black as my army is devoted to Nagash's return, that would fit.. Should keep me very busy for the next year, especially as I've got a bunch of Star Wars legion to buy, KDM and shadows of brimstone to work on and about 10 or so Kickstarters I'm waiting for delivery of in the boardgame space.

Totally agree with the speculation of GW releasing aditional pairs of release boxes (though I have them in slightly different orders in my head). Seems like the most reasonable way to get that many armies re-released. I think for a good portion of people who still play older edtions of WHFB the fact that most of the minis in the boxes are the older sculpts and not new ones is actually a plus, nostalgia is a helluva drug.

I wish people would stop claiming that nostalgia is the only reason why people flock to fantasy. Some people prefer when their fantasy is based on real world history and like it more grounded. From what I can tell, that potential release schedule is pretty much what most TOW enthusiasts are expecting to happen anyway. I'd like to add that TOW will not only be carried forward by nostalgia alone, but also by its gameplay - it *is* more involved and more tactical than AoS, which is more action-y, so that should offer a nice gameplay alternative for people who might find AoS still a bit shallow. Speaking of AoS, that game's minis will also see a nice boost in sales, seeing how cross-compatible many of their sculpts are - especially when you keep in mind that certain factions will get new army lists in the form of the Legacy rules for free. Of those, you can create almost the entire Vampire Cpunts roster with miniatures from the AoS Death Alliance range (mostly Gravelords, with some Flesheaters & Nighthaunts for selected units). Bat swarms & mounted characters might need some improvisation, though. Skaven & Ogres should be fully playable with what AoS offers as well, Dark Elfes in large parts... only Chaos Dwarfs might suffer in that regard. And looking at the army book factions, Beastmen are just reusing the same range that AoS had adapted from WhFB, and Lizardmen can be completely represented with the new Seraphon range. What I am getting at is that GW is probably soft-launching Old World just to be safe; fully aware that it will still boost their overall sales numbers, and that it absolutely alright. Warhammer Fantasy did "fail" as a system before (although that is somewhat debateable). I understand why the business-side of GW would be careful, even if the hobby-side is frothing at the mouth to get their hands on the game. And with the help of readily available base adapters, why not play both games with the same minis and just add to the hobby experience overall? 😁

The reason WHFB wasn't working was because it needed a refresh, it needed simpler rules and a cheaper intro point. You didn't need AoS for that, you just needed a different WHFB.

If you can find Cities of Sigmar kits, that's where the old Dark Ef line went. I just scored an Anvilgard box at the Langstaff Warhammer store, and am scouring the Web for models I can use. Not a lot of luck, but I've found a couple of things out there.

The old world boxes are a lot of money but you get a lot of models in them. If you work out the price per a model in the UK it was 2 pound a model in the USA a little over 3.5 dollars. If you look at the original boxes which had half the models and added inflation they are actually cheaper than the original price. The single boxes is where GW pricing is a lot higher. This idea you paying a high price for them is not true. You have to look at what you getting in the box for that price.

Dana, you're right on the money. Rolling out all the main factions' army boxes in 1 year gives them time to consider what to do for the (presumably already planned-for) 2nd edition of The Old World. Until then, they can fill the release schedule with less demanding things, such as supplemental books, a few brand-new miniatures, perhaps a few updated plastic sets, and a couple "made to order" runs of old-school metal and resin models. Personally, I am comfortably working away on a big backlog of models and have no interest in starting any new armies, especially not for The Old World, where giant blocks of infantry are the norm, of course. I have also learned from experience that the value of paying more to get more stuff is often very questionable in this hobby, so I'm not tempted by the army boxes compared to just the rulebooks by themselves. By the way, that Empire spear guy turned out great!

There could be something in the forecast. “Old World” reminds me of the release of 8th Ed. 40K, offering faction army books and then replacing them with new, more complete army books or arcane journals. (Sell twice what you need once.)

I really want to build a Wood Elves army, and I assume (hope!) a box is coming later this year. Thus I held off on buying one of the new boxes for now. What I did do is decide to get a head start while I'm waiting, and ordered the AoS Dryads and Treeman (Treelord) along with some square bases. That should keep me busy for now as I wait. I did order some of the books - my hope is the difference between the initial boxes and subsequent ones is that the rule book is not included and thus it brings the price point down a bit. Would be nice, but in the end doesn't matter..

I have 2 40k Armies (which have sat on the shelf for about 3 years now...weirdly, my wife won't let me sell them due to the work I've put in.) and 2 AoS armies, as well as at least one more wargame I am heavily invested in (Bolt Action) and many other little ones. The thing that's appealing about Old World is that with this release, aside from the cost of the rulebooks, it seems relatively casual or laid back; at least, that's the approach I intend to take towards it. My intention was to simply buy a Kings of War army and base it properly for Old World so I keep my costs down. With the way Old World seems to be a bit of a backburner project for GW, it feels to me that I can take a similarly casual approach and I don't need to have the official models or anything. It seems like something I can dabble in, more than have to make it my "Lifestyle", as you've put it. In fact, I'm sick of GW games right now because of that "Lifestyle" thing that goes into them. I feel like if I take a break from them, I fall behind, because there's just so much to keep-up with as far as rules updates, model releases, the amount of models to paint, etc, etc. It's why in the past year, Bolt Action has moved to the forefront of my hobby and become my main game, because I can take it so much less seriously, for lack of a better term. I can paint the models, enjoy the game and still have time to do other things with my life. I don't need to sit and study rules, battle tactics, grand strategies, etc. This is the kind of thing that's really been turning me off about GW games recently and why I'm pretty sick of AoS, in spite of trying to get myself hyped for a tournament my buddy wants me to participate in. GW was a fine introduction to the hobby, I still love the models and the high level strategy and thought process behind the game can be fun, but I'm not always down for that and I'm hoping Old World will be something I can take a little more casually.

@edhamacek2469 4 ай бұрын
I am an old cynic but I think they are just using this as a way to offload the mountains of plastic crack they have in warehouses and not reprints. I have heard stories of customers asking for particular older models/sets and being told that GW staff would have to check various warehouses to see if there are any to be had. Support for the game won't last as the same old story will crop up, "not making enough money", meanwhile players will be buying AoS models and rebasing to play Old World either because the models are better or they are sick of waiting for OW versions to be released. Boosted sales for AoS, RIP Old World.

I like the Bretonnians and used to collect Wood Elves, but the overall ability to collect and paint all the armies I'm interested in is limited in multiple ways. For example, old world Wood Elves is likely to be released around when 40k Adepta Sororitas are updated. There's a good chance of there being a Kill Team box or two that I like between now and summer. So, choices to make. I will the the high pricing on RESIN, which I don't like, is basically a double whammy on my collecting Old World minis.

The pricing of that Tomb Kings box for models from the Clinton Administration convinced me to finally take the plunge and buy Kings of War. Paying 2024 prices for 1998 models is shocking, especially as they are trying to lure me back as a consumer after deciding the game I enjoyed was unprofitable and detonated it. My KoW Abyssal Dwarf and Twilight Kin elf starter came and they look great.

Very sensible perspective. One of the few people who has nailed why Games Workshop behaves as a company, as it does; 'it's the share price folks, the share price'. I loved Fantasy, but I, like so many, had stopped buying anything. Supply & Demand mechanics is a real factor in business. Ignore it and the company goes broke. I hate where GW pricing has gone and I buy heaps less from GW now, but what's the answer?
@wulfbak

They have a good format. Each faction can be released with a starter army box similar to what we see with Bretonnians and TK. After all has been released, GW can add to the model ranges, produce campaign books and, if the game is successful enough, introduce new factions. They can even roll legacy factions into the game without much issue. This game has a lot of potential.

While I get where you're coming from with this theory, I don't know if GW would do something like that (sneakily roll out future budget boxes to capitalize on FOMO and force people to buy certain boxes without knowing what's coming in the future). They still provide roadmaps for everything else that has FOMO, like the Kill Team seasons and other limited time/edition offerings. That said, I do think they'll come out with boxes for the known supported armies, but maybe they'll release a launch schedule at LVO. Meanwhile, knowing that certain factions won't be supported or tournament legal (Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Skaven, Ogres, Vampire Counts, Daemons, and Chaos Dwarfs), it still feels half-assed by GW to capitalize on existing WHFB fans and potential new players. Personally, I'm not an old WHFB player and don't have much interest in splitting my time and energy (and money spent on books) between AoS and WHFB. I'm just waiting to see what AoS 4.0 looks like.
