I hated those knives... There were great scout and hunting knives around, hatchets, things that would actually survive hard service but after this movie, the market was flooded with cheap "Rambo" knives. Poor quality blades, the cheapest compass one could embed in the bottom of the handle (limiting it's use as a striker)... inside was a combination of small fish hooks, a few feet of fishing line, a few matches, etc. They sold a ton of those things for $20-40... Of course this was before KZbin with a huge amount of quality outdoorsman, hiking, and other gear reviews.

A lot of Americans were opposed to the U.S. going to Vietnam fighting in their civil war. When soldiers who were drafted came back they were spit on, while the government was at fault, the people blamed their own citizens, instead of blaming the government. The soldiers were national guard, which are basically weekend warriors they are called. National guard are actually state organized militia under the command of the governor of a state. They can be comprised of semi retired regular army, example soldiers that may have served their full term, but did not want to re-enlist full time may choose to stay in the army reserve. This will help them with military pensions usually about $1,500.00 a month. As they only have to go one weekend a month, and one two week update military training a year. Military are subordinate to the civil authority. The open part of the mine is used as an air vent to help some of the toxic gases to escape the mine. Most mines now have ventilation pumps and filters to help remove poisonous and flammable gases etc. I have visited a number of mines in North Carolina, and South Carolina upstate has a series of mines.

He (more or less) invented the stealth genre and was highly influenced by the 80s films Escape from New York and First Blood. Metal Gear Solid 3 is being remade and released this year and takes a lot of inspiration from First Blood with its wilderness setting. The cave sequence is even directly referenced. 😃

In answer to your questions, in addition to elite branches of the regular army such as Special Forces and Rangers, the basic force is further distinguished by different levels of skills, training readiness in the Army: namely regularly army, reserves, and national guard. Regular army vets after their Reserve obligations are fulfilled can choose to continue to serve in the Guard but during the Vietnam era while the compulsory military draft was still in force, it was common for those who wanted to avoid deployment in Vietnam to enlist in the guard before being drafted into the regular army instead. George's W. Bush being a notable example. After basic training, unless there is a major mobilization, Guard service is usually just one summer month per year and one weekend per month, hence the allusion made by the Guard members in the filmat the mine. Also unless the President nationalizes them, they are technically under the command of the governor of each state and are primarily utilized for natural disasters from storms.

The Vietnam War had only been over a few years when this movie came out and there were a lot of hard feelings all the way around: an international political nightmare for the US, widespread media coverage of the atrocities committed by both sides (particularly how North Vietnam used children for suicide missions, branding US troops as 'baby killers'), the unpopularity of both US involvement and the draft used to support it, the list goes on. Returning soldiers were publicly accosted, spit upon, denied Veterans' benefits, and often found themselves unable to return to civilian life - all of this on top of severe PTSD from spending years under extreme combat conditions (or worse). The US Marine Corp has the reputation for being the toughest branch of the military, and the Green Berets are the toughest Marines - their style of hand-to-hand combat training sometimes called "reach out and break someone", designed to take on multiple enemies; if not to kill them, at least eliminate their ability to pose a threat. Ambushes, punji spikes, and all manner of improvised booby-traps. Take that level of combat ability and trap them in a foreign jungle where they're forced to sacrifice their own humanity in order to survive, you can guarantee that anyone who makes it out of there is going to be a walking powder keg.

Back in those days, the leftists had influence over our young that pushed a lot of political hate onto our military. When I got out of the Navy in 1970, I made sure to wear civies going home. When this movie came out 12 years later, it brought it all back to me. I think back on it with anger mainly toward the universities and media. I don't remember law enforcement being on the side of the left. What got the sheriff going against Rambo is that he most likely thought of him as being a left-wing hippy. They were known as being physically unkempt (needing haircuts and showers) as well as disrespecting the flag by wearing it on their clothing; many times on the seat of their pants. He didn't find out Rambo was ex-military until afterwards.

This one was grounded in reality and how Vietnam vets were treated after they came back (Many in our nation tried to sweep it under the rug, they couldnt face losing a war us being the USA lol) and what would happen if a highly trained vet was pushed too far. I shutter to think what a modern Green Beret could do. But the later ones became just big shoot'm ups all muscles and machine guns that defined the 80s action movie. Some still fun but unrealistic as all get out. This though is quality.

Loved this reaction. The part where poor Rambo breaks down about his friend was so sad and tragic. To answer an earlier question you guys asked, the Green Berets are special, elite forces. They are the very best at what they do. It's a part of the military, but not the same as the army. I think the police had their (fictional) local National Guard after him in this film. For the record, the National Guard is, essentially, the militia for each individual state. They will help other states if called to do so, but their priority is their own state first. They mainly respond to things like natural disasters, though they can help with other things, of course. Sorry for the rant. And may I suggest a movie? I wonder if you guys have seen The Sixth Sense?

That’s the National Guard not the US Army but they are under the umbrella of the Army(the soldiers sent in to help find Rambo). Aside from all the military you usually hear about we also have the National Guards and then there is also the US Army Reserves. They are a different than each other. National Guard Soldiers serve both community and country. They respond to domestic emergencies, counterdrug efforts, reconstruction missions for Hurricanes and natural disasters etc. They also can be sent in to combat if absolutely necessary but they really are meant for National things within the US. My pastors wife has been in the National Guard for 10 years and 1 weekend a month she has to leave for training but then she comes back home and is a nurse. They do once a year have a longer and bigger training. When they are deployed they have to take leave from their regular jobs for however long they are needed. There are of course some full-time National Guard members who have that as their career. Some states have additional (SDF) State Defense Forces. As of May 2024, 19 states and Puerto Rico have active state defense forces (SDF), also known as state guards, state military reserves, or state militias.

The 1960s and 1970s were a disgraceful time for the United States. America treated the veterans returning from Vietnam shamefully. These veterans were largely drafted from the poor who were not able to afford deferments like the people protesting them. The protestors attacked the veterans instead of the people (politicians) responsible for getting involved in the war. The things the protestors said and did is a stain on American history. The dramatic change in how veterans are treated today in America is a direct result of American society trying to make up for the 1960s and 1970s. The negative impact of the draft system also led to the reform of the American military under Ronald Reagan in the 1980s resulting in the professional, all volunteer force that exists now. The speech at the end of the movie by Rambo reflects how many Vietnam veterans felt after returning home. They were treated as outcasts by the very society they were protecting. Hate the war not the soldier forced to fight the war.

some of us know that it was just the typical lunatic hipsters that were worked up to mistreat returning vietnam vets though.. most people certainly didnt mistreat their loved ones returning home, which just about every family had

Most businesses in small towns closed in the evening. So nobody was there. I believe the only confirmed kill on Rambos card is the guy that fell out of the helicopter. Oh and three dogs.

The Vietnam War was not a very popular one in the minds of America's home population and this was compounded by the fact they lost the war in the end. Many soldiers returning home had developed mental health issues, alcoholism as a form of self-medication was quite common and perhaps to a lesser extent other forms of drug abuse. Further, this was the cold war, America's entry into the Vietnam war was to stop the spread of communism and it failed so the soldiers may not have been treated very patriotically or as hero's upon returning home. This is a far cry from the rapturous reception US soldiers received upon returning from WW2 for example. Under such circumstances it is not unreasonable to assume that some Vietnam vets were treated very poorly indeed upon returning home and First Blood is that story in it's most extreme form. I'm glad you liked this one.

If you look at your comment you'll see the contradictions in it, and it points to the fact that the point of the war was to delete millions of civilans in developing counties if they tried to declare independence. The mental heath issues came from deleting civilians and realizing they are' lives sacrificing themselves and buddies for the cause of deleting civilans, and realizing even most of the enemy troops were, relative to the US forces, civilians too. And the US won the war which was against the region.

Nuclear Signs in the 1980s were common in public buildings. They designated that there was a shelter in the building in case of a nuclear war. I have no idea if there really were shelters or if it was to create the illusion of safety.

This movie is one of those few opportunities for Stallone to show that he has real acting depth. Stallone has never been the best actor in the world, but when he finds his grove he can be really excellent. The Rocky franchise is another one where he really gets to show his talent as an actor. In fact, I don't think you guys have watched Rocky. I would strongly recommend them all (Rocky V is a kind of mediocre movie and IV is a little goofy, but they're still worth watching. All the other Rocky movies are excellent, though).

This takes place after Vietnam war the soldiers where treated very poorly due to the extensive news coverage of the war, it was the first time Americans back home saw war on live TV and they didn't like it. Unfortunately they lashed out treated the soldiers badly when they came home.

The National Guards are referred to as Weekend Warriors - they are regular Citizens who work all week and then on the weekend the practice tactics in case of a war or in case of some need the state has to put out a curfew or protect property from thieves after a Natural Disaster hits and people have to evacuate the city or something like that. They are usually well intended and good at what they do - in this particular movie they show a group that are fairly new at their jobs and immature. Rambo however was a regular Army man and he was mistreated by the Sherriff because in those days so many men who did not go to war, were envious of the glory of those who did also on the other side - there were men who did not go who hated those who did because the army promoted propaganda commercials all the time announcing that the men who were in the army were real bad asses - so men who were not like that in civilian life hated them out of pure jealousy.
