I much love Rameau, but for me J.S. Bach is the one if I only got to pick one. Fortunately that is not needed. I can have both, plus Chopin, Stravinsky, Britten, and many more. I will say a bit more. I have come to think of Rameau as something of a French Handel. I adore Handel, and feel much the same about Rameau, however...JSBach is in a class above all the other for at least two reasons. The least important is the sheer productivity of this prodigious man...while fathering 13 (I think) children. I cannot imagine how this was done. The major reason for Bach's supremacy, and in this I am joined by no less than Mozart and Chopin, and a number of others, is his structural sense. Music, if you think very deeply about it, and consider what we now know about the human brain and its basic functions other than maintaining life moment to moment in our body, is about pattern detection and memory. Our brain lights up when patterned stimuli are presented to it, and nothing does this quite like music. JS Bach's mastery of hierarchical pattern seems to have no equal anywhere in music. His Well-Tempered Clavier books, and the Goldberg variations, and the Art of the Fugue....and so much more...find anything approaching that achievement in any other composer's work. I love many composers, but for the ability to inspire awe Bach stands alone I do think.

In his sixties, Rameau confessed to the famous Versailles composer Andre' Gre'try that, if he could do it all over again, he would move to Naples and compose in the manner of Pergolesi. I can understand why. Rameau produced pleasant noise. It is kind of impressive. But I am not sure that it is music, just pleasant noise. I do not mind listening to it. But there is no comparison with the transcendental genius of Pergolesi. Leo Depuydt

@williamcarter3955

I am by no means a music scholar, but I suspect that the claim that Rameau's music is just pleasant noise (not music) has somewhat to do with Rameau's emphasis on harmony/rhythmic devices to a larger extent than I would say Italian music of the time and more modern traditions might have. A melody-forward assessment might find some of Rameau's music unimaginative or lacking substance, but I think his harmonic innovations are truly powerful in conveying affects/emotions/ideas! And to me, that's all sounds need do to be music. I would be interested to hear the take of @Leo Depuydt on composers like Froberger / Louis Couperin!
