Fun trivia time - ALW was originally writing the role of The Phantom with Colm Wilkinson in mind, but then Colm took the role of Jean Valjean in the London production of Les Miserables, which was the first English language production of that show. "Bring Him Home" wasn't in the original French version; it was written specifically to take advantage of Colm's incredible high range. Colm Wilkinson DID go on to play The Phantom in the Toronto production, along with Rebecca Caine, who had played Cosette in London, as Christine. And an adolescent boy from Toronto named Ramin Karimloo went to see that show god knows how many times, and decided that he was going to be in musicals one day too.

Ramin has a younger man's power and control, but Colm's voice has a depth and richness that cannot be imitated. The one thing that I feel Colm has over any other performer in both Les Mis and Phantom is his ability to convey the psychological truth of the moment in any given scene. Some people think that the choices Colm makes are too broad, but personally, musical theatre is supposed to be heightened to the threshold of credibility, to play the emotional truth of each moment and no one has ever done it so well. With all due respect to Ramin, Colm is Val Jean, and (with respect to Crawford and Ramin) he is the Phantom.

Colm's voice is that of an angel. Ramin is a very good approximation but doesn't quite hit angelic. This is my first time seeing video and the two together are a wonderful pairing! Glad to know the history of the two - having a mentor/inspiration to look up to is wonderful!

This Song was written expressly for Colm Wilkinson, because the Composer was so impressed with his voice. So happy someone else has come to do justice to it. Spectacular Performers!

This duet literally gave me goosebumps! It’s like listening to the Colm’s then and now in sync; but I agree, only Colm Wilkinson can do that final note, and Ramin stepping back in line for him to do it 😘👌🥺💕💕

Oh My Heart. Doesn't matter how many times I watch this- chills and tears every damn time. This was so beautiful in voice, in comradery and fellowship, in humbleness and humanity. So moving to watch and hear. Every Damn Time.
