If you write "NEBEL (fog)" backwards, you read "LEBEN (life)". Till is brilliant how he combines these two motifs in the song. "She carries the evening in her breast" means in my opinion that she has breast cancer. I disagree with the translation of "und seine Augen werden nass". It shouldn't be translated to "and his eyes tear uo" but rather "and his eyes get wet" even if both mean the same thing. The image Till wanted to tell us is lost in the translation.

PS: You should check out "Dalai Lama". kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIfdc6Zrq7t6qKc The song is Rammstein's modern version of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "Erlkönig". A classic of German literature. I still had to learn the poem by heart in school. I would have preferred to learn the Rammstein lyrics.

I think the line “ She carries the evening in her chest” may also reffer to a simile between evening (almost the end of the day) with her disease meaning that she is about to die. Either way, I have no words to describe the song. It is just too beautiful.

There is another Rammstein song about death, respectively about someone taking a drug overdose (I think it was a friend of Till's). It remains unclear whether he dies in the end or if he turns into a vegetable, you could interpret it either way. Actually I think the later is more probable, going by the lyrics ("he opened his yes, but he did not wake up"). They took an entirely different approach there. The song is fast-paced and hard, but even if you don't know German you will know that it has a deeper meaning. The song's title is "Adios", which is quite fitting.

I also did adios but it was live, I was more focused on the performance than the lyrics so I will probably do like a review on the official song whenever I can, thank you!

Very good response. Till Lindemann is a poet. He also writes good and lyrical texts in English. For example the song home "sweet home" in his solo project Lindemann. It's about cancer.

There are only a handful of reactions to this outstanding "sung poem" and most of them are more or less inadequate. Yours is pretty good. "Nebel" basically is about love, death, loosing a beloved person, eternity and the afterworld. Till uses several uncommon poetic words and symbols which leave space for a couple of interpretations (as a good poem should do). As already said beneath, if one inverse the title Nebel (fog) one gets Leben (life). Till uses this poetic technique of inversion throughout the whole poem. An example: Men live on land, not in the ocean. Therefore we talk about Land's End, terra finis etc. But in the poem the perspective is inverted: from the Sea to the Land (wo das Meer zu Ende ist - where the Sea ends). That's a fish's perspective. But it's not about fish here, so who else could have such a perspective? Someone who can have both perspectives because he is above both. This brings us to the question who is the unnamed all-knowing third person who tells the story? Obviously not a human but a higher entity, maybe God? Now it becomes clear: "wo das Meer das Land berührt" (literally "where the Sea touches the Land") means "where death touches life". Between both is the "fog" zone (Nebel). First she dies passing through this transit zone, at the end he, when his memories already starts to fade. There is much more to analyse in the poem. In my opinion it is highly artistic. In the same category of similar topics fall Rammstein's "Stirb nicht vor mir" (2001) and "Zeit" (2022).

In addition I want to draw your attention to these lyrics: sie trägt den Abend in der Brust und weiß, dass sie muss Common modern German would be "sie weiß, dass sie (bald) sterben muss" (she knows that she has to die (soon, in the near future) ). The verb "verleben" has two meanings. 1. to die (old-fashioned, out of use in common modern German). 2. having had a good time together in the past (seldom, but still used in this meaning). First "verleben" is a reference to the inverted title, meaning "life". Second in this single word with its double meaning Till applies the principal of inversion: 1. "verleben" in the meaning of "to die (in the near future)" = perspective to the future. 2. "verleben" in the meaning of having had common happy moments in the past = perspective to the past. Btw the music perfectly fits to express the poem's messages (check where the music sounds "windy" and where "eternal").

Maybe you can do a double reaction. It's about a Rammstein song called "Seemann" (Sailor). It's a song similar to "Nebel". Till sings in it very high for his deep voice. Then you can use the same title as the cover of "Apocalyptica - feat. Nina Hagen" react. Nina hagen is also a German singer who is called "The German Godmother of punk". In contrast to Till, she sings the song very deeply because of her voice range. To add something to the understanding of the song: It's about an older couple, where one partner notices that the other is dying and he finally has to realize that there is nothing he can do to help. Sorry for my English, I hope it's understandable anyway.
