Hi David just wondering why you use riddle powder instead of a harness.

Think it goes back to when rams were running with 90+ ewes. Always found the harness chaffed them a bit. Also when the fences were not great losing/breaking the raddle crayons was a problem when the rams were moving through hedges..

We were really tight for time so let all out to try & get all the rams re-raddled. Ran them back into the shed later that day & treated both of them 👌

rams with sore feet can have a temperature - that slows down the sperm (so the fertility of the ram reduces). David just throw some grass seed over those bare dirt now so once spring comes it should get up and grow - it will be lambing time so not on the priority list once that starts

The secret to having a good dog is to leave the training to professionals and then get time with said pro trainer and the dog you buy from him/her, to tune up your own ability to work the dog; before you bring it home. The time wasted training a dog, when you don't have the knowledge base, is better spent paying for a good dog that has been selected as a puppy for it's outstanding ability by a true dogman/woman and then properly trained. Trying to train your own dog, is frustrating for you and the dog. It was instantly apparent in the commands you gave, then let the dog ignore a command and then verbally reward her when she ignored said command, you're just confusing for the dog....you can see she has no idea what you actually want from her. Yes a trained dog costs more, but it is instantly effective, if you are guiding it correctly and spares a dog the frustration/negativity of poor training. Lovely Christmas tree, I can see why Orla puts it up early, so you can enjoy it longer.

I think by that logic none of us would learn anything. My thinking is even the pro dog trainers had to learn and I wouldn't be a sheep farmer and I believe the learning is all the fun!

You are here trying to teach people about raising sheep, to literally save someone from errors you've made that you know will affect income, or affect the wellbeing of sheep. By that logic, you should be seeking to be schooled by a pro sheepdog trainer on how to train your dogs, otherwise you are just learning from your mistakes and your mistakes affect the mental wellbeing of your dog; it's not "fun" for your dogs. You are able to recognize when looking at your sheep, some aren't worthy of being in a breeding program, so you don't put years of time and money raising that sheep, it gets culled. A professional dog trainer can tell from a litter of well-bred pups which will be rough working dogs, which will be softer and even if a pup won't work, because not every puppy will be a good worker. That pro trainer can match the dog to the work, a rougher dog will go on cattle, the softer dog on sheep or goats. He/she can also match the dog to the new owner to improve the likelihood of success. They will also teach you to properly work the dog, because they don't want the dog ruined. When training a border collie = a highly intelligent dog that knows more about sheep than you ever will, having been genetically selected for hundreds of year for a single task ~ you have to understand the nuances of canine body language, have perfect timing in your commands, use commands correctly, only one command for one action, spend hours upon hours one on one with the dog and a handful of sheep in a smaller fenced area, honing your skills and the dog's. Those are the basics for training and you are doing none of these. You are currently a detriment to your dogs; if you truly want to properly train a sheep dog, you should be working with a professional sheepdog trainer to teach you those skills. And some of the skills can't actually be taught, if you do not have the capability, which then excludes one from being an effective trainer. I suggest anyone who doesn't have hundreds of hours to put into solely training a dog, but wants a successful sheepdog, to buy a properly trained dog from a reputable dogman. Because 99% of people who own a sheepdog don't have the innate skill to properly train it which ends up with a confused mediocre working dog and a frustrated owner and many of those dogs get dumped on someone else (as you have experienced). If they're lucky ruined dogs get a good pet home, if not they end up neglected, abused or dead.
