With regard to driving on the correct side of the road, you are almost correct. It was not to hide their sword, It was so that when passing another horseman you could fight/defend yourself using your right hand without having to fight backhand.
@martinstaylor
@martinstaylor Жыл бұрын
No, fighting wasn't a primary concern. It's just that if your sword hangs down on the left, it's awkward to swing your left leg over the horse when mounting. Much easier to swing your right leg over. So the horse needs to be facing to your left when you mount, whence etc.

I find it weird when people say some generalisation about Brits - remember Britons come from historically different kingdoms, with their own cultures. It's why the Magna Carta refers to the ancient liberties and customs of London. Britons can be very different depending where you're from. Even if we just look at England, there are areas - usually South or Midlands - where people call pants "trousers" and underpants "pants" (and annoyingly claim on videos that this is how English people speak when people more North (before Scotland) use the correct so-called American way of referring to them. In some parts of England, you could wander around naked and people wouldn't care if you weren't threatening anyone; in other parts, you'd be labelled a paedophile. In some places, nudist venues or events are common, in other places, parents have gone insane over swim sessions offered to nudists. In some areas, people are friendly and if you drop a purse it will be returned; in other areas, if you don't zip up your pocket, your money could be gone in seconds. You've got the arrogance and lack of respect common in Liverpool and Manchester, the chilled pace of life in Devon and Cornwall, and the very obvious inbreeding in Lincolnshire. Long story short, the country is still like various different kingdoms in terms of language and customs.

With a sword drawn from the left side, it is actually quicker to draw it and rapidly strike someone to your right. Being on the left might not be out of politeness - more defensiveness. Right of way in a narrow road is generally done by one driver giving way to the vehicle heading uphill, or to the larger vehicle.
@rogueuniversities6866
@rogueuniversities6866 2 жыл бұрын
Where did you get that right of way nonsense? Are you non-British or just not a driver? Right of way is given to the vehicle that does not have obstacles on its side. When there's parked cars on both sides, it's whoever got there first, though it makes sense to give way to a larger vehicle then in case the driver is a knob

THE HIGHWAY CODE 8. General advice (144 to 158) 155 Single-track roads. These are only wide enough for one vehicle. They may have special passing places. If you see a vehicle coming towards you, or the driver behind wants to overtake, pull into a passing place on your left, or wait opposite a passing place on your right. Give way to vehicles coming uphill whenever you can. If necessary, reverse until you reach a passing place to let the other vehicle pass.

Brit here, few issues I have to bring up about this video. 1.) Lorries have priority when two vehicles meet head to head, otherwise it is the first to yield, not the more expensive one. 2.) I dont think we have purple. 3.) The white sign with a black diagonal line means national speed limit for that type of road. 4.) Roundabouts are give way to people coming from the right, there is an etiquette to indicating on them, but I don't know it exectly.

This might’ve been a useful video except for all the attempts to be funny. For example, what are the cross hatched pavement markings really for?
@norbitonflyer5625
@norbitonflyer5625 8 ай бұрын
First off, in the UK the "pavement" is what Americans call the sidewalk. The box markings are on the carriageway. And they do mean you musn't stop on them, except in one particular circumstance. The markings are usually at traffic-light controlled junctions. You should not enter the box unless your exit is clear - so don't queue in the box. This ensures that when the lights change, you are not obstructing traffic on the crossing route. The exception?. If you are turning right (i.e across the path of oncoming traffic) you may wait in the box for a gap in that oncoming traffic, provided that the road you are trying to enter is clear. YOu will soemtimes see boxes at other placxes, such as railway level crossings (which it is obviously a bad idea to queue across), or exits to fire stations (to ensure they can always get out)

Romans are responsible for driving on the left! If it was good enough for them, who am I to argue? 77 countries still drive on the Left, the last European country to change to driving on the right was Sweden in...1967! Napoleon invaded countries and "forced" them to drive on th right. Up until then, Europe was a left-hand drive place. 165 countries now drive on the Right. America became fully RHD in about 1850! The first keep-right law for driving in the United States was passed in 1792 and applied to the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike. Massachusetts formalized RHT in 1821. However, the National Road was LHT until 1850, "long after the rest of the country had settled on the keep-right convention". Red + Anber is "be ready to go", so, sort of start your engines! Karl Benz invented the car, (internal combustion engine,) in Germany in 1886, and they drove on the right but the "steering" was in the middle of the car so not "handed". NO! Never drive down the middle of a street unless it is a one-way street or there is parking on both sides, then it's really a matter of judgment! Yes, the less expensive car pulls over and we doff our caps to the other, better person. Unless there is a specific layby to pull into as there are on many narrow country lanes. The "Kiss" logo is actually the logo for the Rolling Stones. In a "grid box," there is no stopping unless your exit is blocked. You have to keep moving! They are there to keep intersections clear and free-flowing! Except at rush hour(s), then all bets are off! Red + Anber is "be ready to go", so, sort of start your engines! I cannot tell you what "purple" means. Unless you send me £1,000,000!

Completely WRONG in every way. Let's get things sorted out properly, without any sarcasm (lowest form of wit, usually for morons) 1, yellow box junctions - - - you must NOT enter one, unless you can continue without stopping, don't block the road - - - makes sense doesn't it 2 traffic lights, you stop on red, stop on yellow if it's safe to do so, go on green, flashing yellow means you may start if there are no pedestrians on the crossing 3 national speed limit (white disc with black diagonal stripe), for cars it's 60mph on 2 way traffic roads, 70 on dual carriageways...... larger vehicles are generally 10mph lower If you do come over here, one way of feeling safe is simple, go to a petrol station (gas station), ask for a set of "P" plates, white square with a large green "P" on them, one on front of car one on rear.......... Here we have "L" for learner drivers, "P" for new drivers (voluntary use).......... I 100% guarantee that 99.99% of drivers will give you plenty of space, won't be angry with you and will "be gentle" to you if and when you F**k up
