I think teaching combat sports /martial arts is a great thing. For me, it doesn’t pay any bills. In fact, I lose money constantly. But I will do it as long as I am able. Why? Because teaching others makes me train hard. It also makes me learn new techniques and drill down existing ones. It improves me as a martial artist and as a person. Plus, seeing people get better, stronger, faster, and more confident, makes me extremely happy. Sometimes, a student will ask me after they do a technique exceptionally well, or throw a great combo: Why are you smiling? Did I do something wrong? I say, no, what you just did was beautiful to me. It made my whole day.....Now, do it again.

I teach martial arts since 2010. Today I'm 40 years old, I had this desire to make a living with what I love the most since I was a kid, I started back in 2010 by (accident) my former Muay Thai coach called me and asked if I would like to buy his gym with all the pads, bags, matts aso asf....i said yes and so I began. In the beginning I had like Ramsey 3 Jobs, welder on constructions and bouncer/security officer and gave 5 times a week my JKD and Muay Thai/Sanda classes. I took me around 4 years to make enough money with my gym to quit welding and constructions (which was from Mo-Fr) and I still work as security officer and bodyguard next to my gym. Go for your dreams and never stop learning. Hope you will get to your goal and wish you all the best. 😊 Regards from Switzerland

Ramsey, real quick - you’ve spent some time talking about fight scenes; what are your five favorite movies featuring martial arts? Movies can’t usually depict them too accurately in the interest of entertainment, but some movies are closer than others, and some display picture-perfect techniques that inspire us to learn martial arts. What are some movies that inspired you, and that you might recommend? PS - This includes movies like Rocky and the Creed movies. Boxing is definitely a martial art too!

Ephraim Belnap - If I may add my two cents: Regarding swordsmanship (Kenjutsu), the very old japanese samurai movies („7 Samurai“, „Ronin“ etc.) are a good representation of the art; the people choreographing the fights were classically trained in the old ways for one thing and they wished to bring that to the silver screen (for the most part; there were already more „flashy“ depictions of MA back then, i.g. the „Zatoichi“ series of movies)

It will differ from country to country and I never looked too much into it, but from what i gathered along the way in our country it is most: 1) self regulated criteria of specific traditional MA organisations 2) education and certifications of central state-level bodies for recognized combat sports 3) degrees from the faculty of kinesiology (either scientific or professional). It is my impression that a lot of successful coaches have a career path that goes from successful competition in the given sport to coaching certificates to part-time -professional degree programs at the said faculty, either in the particular sport of a more general field like "physical conditioning for athletes". So IMHO you need to look into your local regulations in general and for the specific MA or sport in particular, and also look into options that might amplify your income source potentials with certifications (if needed) for more general sport coaching (like aforementioned degree in sport conditioning, or fitness etc). More than a few full-time coaches around here do that as it helps them in physical preparation of competitive athletes in their sport, but also in widening their client base beyond the particular sport, specially into general fitness that attracts a lot of clients.

Some styles have rules or requirements such as age, experience, rank, or other things like that before you can teach. It seems like it's common sense, right? But it could save you a future fight. Especially if that style is part of a larger organization that regulates that kind of thing.

The major TMAs have a national body or some version of group collective, but it's all self-governed. My instructor does have a certificate from one such body. Accreditation is basically demonstrating to a panel of your peers that you can faithfully teach your art, more or less like how a PhD student would earn their doctorate. I think this is a very important way to not be a McDojo. Anyone can open up a dojo and get students, but if you are truly committed to your art, then you will do so only with this physical permission from those proven individuals who have walked the path before you. Getting a black belt is not enough- it's not even a sufficient start.

imo the first step should be to assist the trainers in your club. Teaching-practice helps a lot to get a deeper understanding of the main principles of a fight and will improve your own style a lot. But it's the opportunity to test for yourself if this is the thing for you to do for a living... And you have to be the guy, people like to take advice from - you might be the best fighter but the worst teacher or vice versa - so you have to find out and find your way to balance these two things and afterwards build up your gym if it seems to be the right. There might be some psychological reasons not to talk about your goals too much. Subconsciousness is a strange thing and it is particularly iffy with "The Truth". There was a study where they gave two groups certain goals. One group had to tell everyone what their goals are and then work towards them, the other just note them down and work towards them. The first group accomplished less but felt a lot better about what they did so far. It seems sometimes our brain mistakes "talking about a goal" with "reaching that goal".

Is it really that much different from working as any other kind of fitness instructor? Sure, Ramsey's personal path is unique, but there are lots of potential paths to doing something as a martial arts instructor even if it's only a part time job and you have to keep another job to pay the bills. Find some initial step that gets you started and don't think about it as just one big mountain to jump over all at once. Like Ramsey started teaching kids. It could even start with "free" teaching. Do you spend time helping the white belts in your gym right now? And is that satisfying? Each of these small steps helps you have confidence that you actually want to keep going that direction. Or maybe you start down this path and then decide later you really want to do something else

believe it or not I have seen it happen by accident more then once. as far as setting out to do it, any chance this person speaks Russian? you can go to higher education (like college) specifically for combat sports/martial arts in Russia. as far as in the USA (other countries of course could vary wildly) one of the easiest ways to go about it is either trying to get a class schedule for a YMCA or at a church. church's are often looking for things they can do to help their community (at least we hope lol) and sometimes if you can work out the schedule to be out of their way when they need the space you can often use the area free or very cheap. there are a lot of potentaill opportunities, the real question that will impact things most heavily is what you plan to teach, the needs of a TKD academy vary dramatically from a Judo club...anyway I have seen more then one martial arts academy open and prosper so I'd be very glad to share my experiences with this person who asked or anyone else for that matter.

Hey all, I would like to share my story. I began training at the age of five in Shotokan (currently a black belt) and boxing and later added Muay Thai and Taekwondo (currently a black belt) to my arsenal while also beginning (though only a year ago) Jiu-Jitsu, Kung Fu, and Capoeria. I have had a few amateur fights (10-2) in order to better understand the sports. Recently at age eighteen, I opened my first gym with the goal to teach as much as I can to people who need it. I have made a handbook and visual guide and in-depth analysis of every technique I teach and so on and so forth. As it stands, I am having trouble attracting students. It feels like due to my age, I am not taken seriously even though I carry myself professionally; even though I have credentials, I understand I do not know everything, but I at least thought I knew enough to teach. It is becoming disheartening to have little to no growth for months at a time as my class currently only has a dozen regular students, and this is despite advertising, flyers, and social media. Any advice would be amazing.
@jeffnorris88485 жыл бұрын
Lets look at your motives."the goal to teach as much as I can to people who need it " is dozen students in need enough? I suspect your question is more about personal financial success and respect than merely teaching those in need. Generally speaking Famous coaches have to have Famous students. That means competitions and medals. Another model would be to see what your current group of students want and ask if they are getting it from you. My kickboxing Coach says my stance is to sideways (becouse of my 2 year intence taekwondo training), and it makes it harder for me to generate power with my hands, and makes me avoid brawls and i that i should be confortable brawling in the gym when its safe. Im afraid if i adapt a new kickboxe muaythay stance, i'll lose what makes me diferent. Can I get your opinion Ramsey? Should i be Stephen Thompson or Cowboy. Can i have multiple stances and change as necessary?
@RamseyDewey5 жыл бұрын
Of course you can and should be able to change stances dynamically in a fight, from a side stance to a squared forward offensive stance, to a squared defensive stance with most of the weight on the back leg, to a back stance where you can spin and pivot, etc... it gives you more options. So learn them all. That being said, a side stance can allow you to move very quickly and cover a lot of ground. This can work really well in a larger arena. It does not work well at all in a smaller arena. One of the biggest drawbacks of a side stance is exposing yourself to leg kicks that you can’t check. If your taekwondo is good enough, and you’re fast enough, you can counter kick with a lead leg side kick, a front kick, or a spinning back kick. Watch Michael Venon Page’s fights. He’s made a whole career out of the side stance. Buy pay close attention to his last loss and how that leg kick caught him- a kick that would have simply bounced off him from a squared stance.

Why do people say things like ‘it’s not a real job’. Just rude really.
@jaketheasianguy33075 жыл бұрын
People these days never considered anything that related to sport or entertainment is a legit job.All they wanted for their kids is to become doctor,engineer and stuffs.I once told my mum and dad when i was 10 that i wanted to be a game developer and they just laugh at me,shake their head like i just spilled nonsense.Back when i was 18,they tried their best to shove and push me into med school,i said i don't like it and imagine the shock on their face.I'm practicing martial arts right now but i know i'm suck at teaching and professional competition is a no go so making martial arts profitable to be considred a dead end.Imagine doing a job that you hate every minute of it but you still do it just because of decent salary for 30 years,sounds like a very pathetic and sad life.

Hello coach Ramsey, I have been binge watching many of your videos, enjoying the content. A couple of months from now I hope to look back at this comment and see how much I have improved since then. I'm looking into starting HEMA, because of my interest in swordplay and also the other historical ascpects associated with it, but I would like to know what martial art would be good for form as a second option? Having suffered some injuries in the past I know that competition is unlikely to be for me. Keep up the nice content! by the way have you seen this series on youtube for self defense? Might be nice for the self defense analysis series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6KWnqF6h7t8p5I

Is it children you don't enjoy teaching? Or is it the parents of the children that are just a bear to deal with?
@talaniel5 жыл бұрын
I believe he meant children. Or at least from my experience, parents are not a problem. Actually, they could become a problem when they force a child to train, but the child does not want to. I recall one such a case - this boy really did not enjoyed the training, but kept coming because of his mother. Well, he stopped coming after several years - he's won probably after all. I've never seen his mother to tell her something...

@@talaniel in my experience, the parents are ALWAYS the problem when it comes to kids in sports. "Why is my son still a yellow belt, why doesn't Billy get to play centre? Why isn't my child captain? Do you even know how to coach!?" And that's all without ever looking at how they push the child into hating the sport.

if you really want to make a life of teaching, maybe you should learn how to be a teacher, first, maybe in concert with learn to be a martial artiest. The old saying about those that can't teach, both my parents were teachers, and the true of the road is most that teach can't. So i'd advise going to a local community college, or your public liberty, get stuck in about teaching.
