A viewer wants to know how I “get away with trashing Chinese Kungfu in China”. There are a few things to unpack there, since (1) I don’t, I love traditional Chinese martial arts, and (2) even if I did, no one would care.
(Even so, I get a fair amount of comments like this assuming that I have unfairly attacked traditional martial artists. If you feel this way, please link me to a video where you feel this has happened.)
Then we rehash the Xu Xiaodong and his social credit scores debacle. It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly certain people are about what happens in China when they have never even been to China.
Then I go on a tangent about jellyfish. To my vegan viewers: why would you eat a carrot, but not a jellyfish? Explain the ethics to me please.
There were literal tons of jellyfish being washed up on shore this week.
This episode of Q&A with the Coach was filmed on the beach of the Haitang bay, in Hainan, China, next to the South China Sea.

America has some major issues with giving local lawmaking powers to entities that should have no ability to pass laws. An example of this is city ordinances. A small group of people can literally pass any law they want as a city ordinance. Such as if you live in the city your grass cannot be more than 2 inches tall. They are not required to post these laws to the public in any meaningful way but have the power to impose fines and criminal penalties on violators. This in my opinion is a misuse of power and needs to be abolished stripping cities and countries of such arbitrary power.

Not only surplus jellyfish, there are a lot of invasive or problematic species we could be eating! The Asian Carp is a damaging invasive species laying waste to aquatic ecosystems here in America. Anglers cut them up for bait or cast them aside as trash seeing them as unappetizing. Which is incredible, because they are the most widely eaten freshwater fish in the world!

Hey Ramsey you are bringing up a very interesting point I am vegan and I have considered eating mollusks such as clams and oysters for this very same reason they don't have a brain but they do have a central nervous system I never considered jellyfish but I believe you are right if the general tenant of veganism is to not cause harm or suffering you're not really causing it to those animals they don't feel that they don't experience that and you're also right about some animals it doesn't take much to raise them. Man you and I could have some seriously long discussions about this and I personally believe you're on the right track and there isn't anything wrong with eating either one of those types of animals.
@makokx7063
@makokx7063 Жыл бұрын
Since it is alive you are causing "harm". Even to plants that you eat, they are alive, so you can't avoid "harm". As far as suffering goes would you eat an animal that was killed with nitrogen? They will just go to sleep and die without even knowing it themselves, 0 suffering.

Learned stuff about China, which I definitely had a skewed idea about (partly stemming from your statement a while back that you are forced to use a VPN because the government blocks youtube). I did learn to be more open-minded though, especially last year when I went to Vietnam for a week thinking it was going to be boring, and even a week in Vietnam was going to be too long. Oh how wrong I was. My week-long trip to Vietnam turned into a year-and-a-half stay, and frankly now I can't imagine living anywhere else. Hoping to visit China soon (it was on the agenda in March of 2020 but we all know how that turned out). Anyway... great content! Cheers!

This is great! Thank you for explaining some of the systems in China. We get fed some pretty bad sounding info over here. I teach Wing Chun in Australia. At my club we do regular sparring, pad training, interclub fights and at times have competed in the ring in San Shou (Sanda). When Xu Xiaodong became well known it massively effected my ability to get new students. Suddenly Wing Chun became very unpopular and many people were convinced that Wing Chun was always a joke and wasnt useful at all. I agree that the worst martial art in the world is Wing Chun done badly, but done well it can work. My understanding was that Xu Xiaodong wasnt attacking traditional martial arts in general but was trying to expose some specific charlatans. Is that right? Love the content. Thank you for your wonderful insights.

You know that Xu Xiaodong fought against one of the top 3 Wing Chun Masters of China? I do not think that he is after frauds, but rather trying to show kung fu is thrash, kind of reminds on the western occupation with the sick man of asia campaign. There are videos, where he gets beaten up too, running with a blue face, but these are not this popular

Take kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2q8lYZ8iJ14oMU - Ding Hao vs Xu Xiaodong , you can clearly see that he has problems with the ducking in boxing, usually shaolin has the three doors concept, so how come no one in wing chun can fight lowered opponents? Another issue about the ip man branch is often the entry techniques of wing chun with the front kick. There is the whole concept that you still have in shaolin wing chun and red boat wing chun lost somehow. But this kind of made me wonder on the low techniques of chen taiji how they would fare with it
@PaMuShin

I doubt that wing chun was always a joke, but i think the shortened big city version somehow was brought incomplete or is teached incomplete compared to the older versions, the older versions still have much more hung gar flavor in them

Peter Singer, philosopher of ethics, professor of bioethics at Princeton, author Animal Liberation, and co-author of The Ethics of What We Eat, thinks that it’s ethical to eat bivalve mollusks such as scallops, mussels, clams, and oysters due to their apparent inability to experience pain or suffering. Pending an anatomical verification, jelly fish would very likely make it onto the ethical menu as well. Other moral philosophers, such as Professor Shelly Kagan, would also add that it’s ethical for an otherwise vegetarian/vegan (such as himself) to eat leftover meat so that it doesn’t go to waste. Please note that this is not an appeal to authority because these philosophers always appeal to reason and evidence in addition to righting for a lay audience. I only mention their names so that people can find their books and evaluate the reasons themselves.

I am vegan, but I'm not sure how qualified I am to give you a good an answer on the jellyfish. That being said. Here goes. It's hard to say what should be accepted as an ethical food source. One that has minimal impact on the environment and suffering of other creatures? If that is the definition. There aren't any commercially available food sources that can be classified as 100% cruelty free with zero environmental impact. It turns in to a question of what creates the least amount damage. Even non animal agriculture uses animal by-products, is the cause of animal and insect deaths, and It has it's own carbon footprint and environmental impact due to farming equipment, pesticides(if not organic), transportation, and packaging waste. So to compare that to picking up a jellyfish and eating it. In that case. It may be more ethical and have less environmental impact than going to the grocery store and buying a something like a block of tofu.

Your kung fu is actually pretty good. Since...you know...you can fight. The videos you did analyzing Taiji, Capoeira, and the speed bag are A+. I would like to see more body movement (xinyiba), though. Last time I left a comment about that you said “there is no internal in fighting.” Hear me out: you do Jack Dempsey’s falling step, right? Body weight goes down and into the other guy, right? When you do the falling step, pay attention to the movement of your hips. The whole body moves at the same time but the forward movement of your hips will drive a vertical wave up your back that can be directed out your arms. Most people miss this, although I’m happy if people can just get the falling step correct. But there’s more depth to it than just body slamming. Dempsey also used isometric loading. That’s also an internal principle. Look up isometric loading for boxing.

Hi Ramsey, I have been watching your content for the past two and a half years, and I am a big fan of your work. Just had a question for the next time you do a Q&A. How do you deal with an opponent who has superb knee stomps, oblique, and general side kicks to the knees/ upper thigh, think Jon Jones. Some context, I am a bigger guy (orthodox middleweight), who has been training in Dutch kickboxing, and BJJ for the past two and a half years. My opponent/ training partner is a smaller guy (southpaw lightweight) who has a background in taekwondo, and we have been training kickboxing for a similar amount of time. every time I step into jab, or even feint a step in I am getting knee stomped, or obliqued, and once I reach for a kick, I can sense the lead leg snap kick to the face imminent. My head Coach clay tells me to play his game because my reach is longer, but I cant lie coach Ramsey, the time it takes me to chamber my lead leg, I have been body kicked, then head kicked already. that's the speed difference. Do you have any advice to deal with this tricky, fast style? Big fan from Vancouver BC. Best to you and yours coach - Justin

I am curious on anyone's thoughts on watching or studying fighting techniques while injured. I very recently had ACL reconstruction surgery and currently can not practice my kickboxing and what not. I still watch some videos currently but I have started watching less cause I get an itch of wanting to try the stuff I watched but know that I cant and that bums me out. Am I thinking of this the wrong way? Like is there a kind of mental aspect to studying techniques like with pro wrestling or is it better to just wait till I can train again? I hope this was a clear question but its something I have been wondering the last two weeks. Thanks for any tips or answers.

Hey mate, I address a pretty important question and I m going to sum it up as much as I can. 1.Why do some fighters get very buff from fighting training when this is supposed to burn you out so much and make you lose weight? Tyron Woodley, Mike Tyson, Francis Nganu? 2. (M * v'2)/2 , kinetic energy. Why do our muscles get bigger, from a evolutionary perspective if they might slow you down and losing speed so decreasing the more important factor in punching power? Was there not an evolutionary constraint that would favor idk fighting? I ask those 2 question because first of all I get very buff just from kickboxing and find myself very hard to compete, like to lose weight. I can send pictures if someone wants to see what I m talking about. PS : I know punching power increases little with muscle size but what is the evolutionary point to get buffer if you slow down? Whats the point of having tree trunk legs if you punch from arms ? I don't see how you could utilize a buffer body in order to maximize being buff. The only answer i found is that fights were not supposed to take long and being very explosive (me and the fighters above) ends them in the 60 seconds gap and that due to training the game changed from explosiveness to endurance.

Alot of vegans eat living things with mitochondia, specifically algae. Some even market supplements of chlorella and spirulina as superfoods because it has analogous forms of vitamin B12 (which have shown to not really be used in the human body). My source... I was a vegan for a year too in 2008-2009. I wonder if these algaes are closer to animals, like jelly fish and sea anemone, then plants.

You mentioned how you want to know more about the history and applications of Chinese martial arts and their taolu/forms, you might want to talk to Will from monkey steals peach, or Joshua from shaolin yuzhai, they seem to have done a lot of, if not, the most, legitimate research into the history of many martial arts throughout China and they're known for sparring and pressure testing with their kung fu too, just a recommendation 🙂

Please give Systema a fair appraisal. I have a spinal cord injury (injuries, plural actually) and I've found it very beneficial for my health overall, the biomechanics of it do stand up and I have re-learned how to use certain parts of my body to minimise the efforts going through my body and thus reducing the stress on my spinal injuries. Also, the gentle slow nature of our training that slowly builds in intensity is great for us wounded ones as it slowly allows us to build strength in muscles (some of which are hard to access due to nerve injuries) and improves our cardio as walking distance and running is right out of the window for us due to the nature of our injuries.

I’m all for lab grown meat, I think it is a wonderful thing that will do wonderful things to help the environment and save many animals, but I don’t plan to eat it. The thought of eating flesh is now disgusting to me, even it I know it isn’t from a creature that existed. I'm totally lost here. I had a run in with an old acquaintance and they became buff since I last saw them; I asked them what they did to achieve this and they gave me a few pointers. One of these was that, "Don't eat sugar," and they commented on having very few breads and such. I've heard WAY too much back and forth on sugars. I thought carbohydrates = sugars. I thought sugar was your body's preferred energy source. Hell, at this point I've heard people say that eating too much sugars, fats, and/or proteins is bad for you. Am I missing something or is this as crazy as it sounds?
@makokx7063
@makokx7063 Жыл бұрын
I know this is an old post, but concerning body composition and macro nutrients here are a few things. Protein is what your body uses to actually build things so whether you are a body builder, power lifter, athlete or whatever you should prioritize proteins. 1.2-1.7g protein / kg of body weight is common advice. Fats are also important for cell structures and vitamin transport and affect hormones but since they are the most energy dense it's easy to go overboard and gain weight. Generally eat in moderation. Finally we come to carbohydrates. They are generally categorized into sugars, fiber and starches. The thing about carbs is unlike proteins and fats they do nothing but create energy and affect hormones, so technically you could live without ever eating one again, but you'd die without fats and proteins. (Technically it'd be nearly impossible to get enough vitamins and minerals without consuming carbs though so. . . ) Carbs are very important in training because glucose (blood sugar) is the thing that gives you explosive energy. Burning fat takes time and if you have no glucose left you are probably going to be a bit sluggish and less explosive. I mainly do heavy lifting for exercise and could bench press 140kg for 2 reps. I went on the Keto Diet (extremely low carb - high fat diet) so I had little to no glucose and was burning fat for energy. I felt like I had unlimited energy, I could walk for hours and hours and not feel tired at all but my bench dropped to 120kg and I struggled with it; no explosive energy. Right now my diet is quick burning simple carbs (sugary things) before a workout for energy with protein and fats, then slow burning complex carbs (like oatmeal) after the workout, again with protein and fats, usually eggs. It's important to get carbs after a workout because stress (mechanical and mental) releases a hormone called cortisol and this impedes muscle growth. Carbs reduce cortisol (that is why we want junk food when were stressed). Then I usually just eat a big plate of meat and veggies for dinner. In other words I just use carbs as a fuel for intense exercise and stress regulation. (As well as the occasional treat ^_- ) The final effect of carbs is that the energy, glucose, is stored in the muscles with water in the form glycogen. This makes muscles inflate and makes you look bigger. If you have a big, sugary meal with enough liquid you can sometimes even feel yourself swell up like a sponge. If you took a picture of yourself like that and ate no carbs for 24 hours and took a picture again you could see the shrinkage. I suppose the final, popular diet argument nowadays is fats vs carbs. You could write a thousand page paper on it so very, very simply here is the basic concept. Carbs, particularly quick burning (sugar) ones, have a strong insulin response. Insulin is the hormone responsible for taking sugar out of the blood and pulling it into the muscles and liver and if your muscles and liver are full the body turns the glucose into lipids and stores it as far. Insulin also blocks you from using fat so you can't burn any with high insulin. So it's not difficult to end up storing the energy as fat instead of using it, this leads to blood sugar levels plummeting and making you crave food again. Ever eat a huge bowl of pasta or something and be starving an hour later? For fats, they are very calorie dense. Proteins and carbs are 4kcal/g and fats are 9kcal/g, so it is easy to go overboard with them and get fat. The good thing is they have nearly no impact on insulin and are very satiating. If I have a nice fatty steak for dinner I don't even get hungry until the same time the next day. So neither is necessarily good or bad, they are just different. One thing you do want to avoid to an extent though is eating them both at the same time. A large amount of carbs will make your body start absorbing any energy it can get and the fat means a ton of calories are going to get absorbed. So yeah, pizza is the devil, lol. I guess if we truly want to be thorough (and since we came this far, why not?) the 4th macro "nutrient" is alcohol. Alcohol has no nutritional quality itself but gives energy at 7kcal/g. Alcohol is a poison and the body will use the energy from it before anything else so if you have say alcohol and carbs, like a nice beer, it's really easy for those carbs to be absorbed while the alcohol is being burned. If you want to drink and are worried about body composition I'd suggest straight liquor. Whiskey, vodka, rum and no sugary mixers. Maybe some tonic water and of course no snacks while drinking. Finally, finally, moderation is key so don't feel bad for having a donut or a beer every once in a while, just don't make them a daily thing. Apologies for being so long. Hope that clears some things up!

As I understand while Jellyfish don't have a central nervous system, they do have a nerve net. I don't know if that gives them any self-awareness or not, or the ability to experience pain at all. I would er on caution since I don't need to eat jellyfish, not eating them, but if I were forced to eat a jellyfish or a pig, I would eat the jellyfish since it is less likely to experience pain or have a will to live. This is tangential to your question as to whether it would be moral or not, I would also be concerned about how jellyfish would be collected. If nets would be used, bycatch which would include vertebrates that certainly experience self-awareness and pain would be a reason to avoid eating jellyfish, due to the indirect harm which can quite substantial. TLDR: It's probably okay to eat Jellyfish if they aren't conscience, but if you don't need to, why risk it.
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 2 жыл бұрын
If catching a small number of vertebrates in nets with jellyfish make it immoral to eat jellyfish, then all plant agriculture is exponentially more immoral considering the vast number on animals that are killed (not to mention the entire ecosystem destroyed where the field is located) every time a field is prepared, plowed, tended, or harvested.
@dadungeonmaster
@dadungeonmaster 2 жыл бұрын
@@RamseyDewey I subscribe to Utilitarian moral philosophy and not a deontological one. Plant agriculture absolutely does kill a certain amount of sentient animals. As a result it would be better if we could minimize that sufferering, However a certain degree of suffering is inevitable. That said the majority of foodcrops are not grown in order to feed humans, but the animals humans eat. So animal crop deaths would be minimized if we ate more crops instead of giving the crops to livestock. This won't apply to certain kinds of animal agriculture but it does to the majority where I live. The second point I'd bring up is neccesity. By virtue of my existence, my consumption leads to a certain degree of suffering to sentient creatures. I don't think it is trully reasonable to ask people to ensure no suffering occurs as a by product of their survival. While I am vegan, I can concede it might not be reasonable to ask people in certain circumstances not to eat animals, ie subsistence farmers and those in food deserts. I and many others are in a privileged position where we can minimize the suffering we neccesarily cause by our own existence. My moral philosophy compells me to minimize suffering when I can, for others making the same choices would lead to their starvation. I wouldn't in good conscience be able to judge those people. I would simply hope we could empower them so they would have the opportunity to make the same choices i do. TLDR: I don't need to eat jelly fish, I do need to eat something. Eating plants will on average lead to less suffering.
