Wow when you said, "getting older is a gift; a gift not everybody gets", that was a real revelation for me. Been kind of going through a midlife crisis thing lately, looking back at my youth and longing to be young again, but I never looked at aging the way you so eloquently put it. That really put things in a better perspective for me, thanks Ramsey!

The best thing I learned when I was training in Jeet Kune Do was, and I'm paraphrasing, "I can't be Bruce Lee or this other guy with great skill, I can only be me, so I have to be the best me I can be." I use that in everything that I do, be it BJJ or my art, music, even work, that's the best lesson I learned. I hope this kid learns this.

@ReLeonidaSpartan4 жыл бұрын
Hey kid, i hope you read this message. When i was your age i struggled a lot, i was poor, weak and ugly and almost nobody wanted to be my friend. At school was even worse since i was in love with a classmate and obviously it was a dead end route. Other people mocked me, i even got in a couple of fights and i was lucky enough to get out without a scratch, the most brutal one ended in the ground. Well, i think i deserved it because the other kid was the one i scarred for life in the face with my keys in a previous fight, but that was 2 against me. After that i tried to avoid the area where the fight happened fearing an aggression. And that's where i got stuck: Fear. I had no one who believed in me, i was alone, therefore i've never developed vital skills for that age. I'm still struggling every day because the problems of the period dragged along with the new problems. I was alone, you aren't. We, as a community, support you. If you want to learn a martial art you're welcome, you can write here and find friends willing to teach you, to share their experiences, to guide you even with the problems of your life. You are not alone.

back when i was a kid i didn't have a lot of friends either, always found making friends hard. anyway, back then i studied books, used furniture for weights, etc., studied how to do this and that, and practiced everyday. i only picked the realistic moves i thought might come in handy. you'd be surprised just how useful it was and soon if someone picked a fight with me, i didn't have a problem making them regret it. i practicing everything, exercised, and persistence paid off as the moves became muscle memory. never needed someone else to practice, in fact i never considered it since i'd get enough practice just defending myself, that and i came to like the challenges. biggest thing i eventually learned is attitude when i got older. someone picked on me i just didn't react or let anything show that it bothered me, sometimes even let a slight smile go at the right time. well unless i got mad anyway. you'd be surprised just how many people will change their minds when they discover it doesn't bother you and they can't intimidate you. but usually having a reputation of not taking crap can help too. never let them mentally get the best of you, if you let them then the battle is already lost.

The key to make friends is to be genuinely curious and interested about everything in life. Gotta get experience from others to add wisdom and knowledge to your own. In return of getting interested to others passions, you can talk about yours and that's how healthy discussions and friends are made. I used to have no friends thoughout almost all the time I was in school, but once I got out, being a hard worker who respects others and who's interested in all kind of things helped me make friends with so much ease compared to the past it's frightening. Don't lick anyone's boots or be passive though, but be curious of others, of different activities and be respectful, not only will you have friends but if you do it right they won't be complete douchebags either. Also love yourself, it will never be said enough, and if you can't, give yourself reasons to be proud of yourself.

Bruce Lee learned the rules before he figured out how to break them. His skill was built on that mastery. There are no shortcuts. When you know nothing, even a child's teaching has value. But one should also know why one wants to train - and make sure it's for good reasons. Bruce Lee would not have stood a chance against my Nana in her Buick. There are other reasons to train than to be invulnerable. Sterling advice in this presentation RD! Never heard it put that way before. Spot on!

But whenever I think about teaching people, I always think of how much better I have to get before I can call myself a worthwhile instructor, and while it's exciting to know how much room there is to improve, it can also seem like an impossible mountain to climb at times, so I was really encouraged by your answer to this question.

This is a wonderful video. Bruce Lee is my primary hero. I learned a lot from his philosophy, including thinking for myself, taking what works and throwing away what doesn't, and being your own person, and not falling into traps of tradition. I utilize his concept of JKD for my entire life, creating myself in my own image and editing the image to my own likings. Your points on the potential that we all have with the information available to us are so very true. Having said that, I must say that Bruce Lee isn't the only person who has motivated me. I've always loved martial arts, despite my limited experience with them, I always knew that eventually I'll have to get into it. You are the one who has tipped the scales in my motivation that is leading me into this inevitable slide towards martial arts and fitness. Thank you for your informative videos and your motivation. I have a lot of respect for you and credit you for finally 'pushing' me in the right direction. I have plenty of experience with fitness in my life, starting with the Army, later in my interest in bodybuilding, which led to continuous interest and research into fitness and nutrition, even when I wasn't practicing it. My fitness and martial arts aspirations have long been foiled for many many years by my personal problems such as drug addiction, getting involved with the Russian Mafia, then prison. Now that I am free and find myself in a situation that with very likely allow me to train at a place that teaches primarily JKD+BJJ+Muai Thai, with a focus on functionality. I will take the necessary steps to make this happen and will continue to watch your videos. Thank you again.

Bruce Lee just wanted to make the mystical aspects of martial arts into scientific practical moves he knew a lot of the movement where not worth the time and traditional martial arts would spend a lot of time with the mystical aspects of martial arts and never explained the actual moves that also where hidden within these movements. That's why he loked boxing because boxing completely eliminated the mystical and philosophical and focused on practicality and effectiveness. He was literally working on the what modern day MMA has become today. He was like firas zahabi before his time or shamrock. Only difference is Bruce didn't have an Avenue to do it in. So yes we are in a better position to learn and develop our own style because of all the knowledge out there but at the same time there is a higher level of criticism out there and eager challengers.

He usually just used one stunt double: Yuen Wah. Mr: Yuen stood in for Bruce every time there was any kind of acrobatic maneuver, for example- the gymnastics tumbling pass in Enter the Dragon after the first sparring scene, and the backflip kick later in the same movie.
@jamesrowlands19434 жыл бұрын
@@RamseyDewey I know the gymnastics was beyond him because of the back injury he suffered lifting weights, his films were great for the era, but the legend he acquired as a result is nonsense, every tale of people he "fought" were usually people who relied on him for employment, stunt men, etc. How long would someone keep their job if they openly whooped their boss? Bruce Lee told a lot of lies about his fighting prowess to garner students to his martial arts classes before he was famous, and it's not as though people were going to travel all the way to China to fact check his bad ass street fighting credentials in the 60's...
@williamwest70084 жыл бұрын
@@jamesrowlands1943 That's not true. I don't understand why people constantly need to find some way to put Bruce Lee down. If he's as bad as you think he is then why do you even spend time thinking about him enough to write these things? You can talk all day about how bad he was in your opinion but I bet you don't have his dedication,discipline,ability, or his physique. If you can surpass him physically, spiritually, mentally, then say these things. I'm sure you can't, that's why you're finding excuses for why he's no good.

@@williamwest7008 you're right, I don't share Bruce Lee's physical attributes, the last time I weighed 140lbs I was 13... he was a talented actor but he was not a fighter, he had glorified sparring sessions with people. His only real fight was against Wong Jack Man, and Bruce Lee lost...
@williamwest70084 жыл бұрын
@@jamesrowlands1943 Okay if you think he's no good then stop talking about him. No point wasting your time right? Oh wait you won't stop because every person who belittles him and tries to discredit him are jealous and insecure. Ramsey Dewey explained to you that Bruce Lee had to use Yuen Wah for acrobatics in films because of his back. You had to go and rant on about how Bruce is fake, made things up etc. That shows me you're insecure of another man's achievements. Same as when you mentioned being 140 lbs. You try to make yourself feel better by insulting his size which by the way he was 135 lbs. Bruce Lee haters never ever know what they're talking about. No facts, no research, just something you heard or thought up to comfort your own lacking in life. Lastly if Lee made things up then tell me how is it that everyone who ever met him says how good he was? These people range from Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Gene Lebell, Mike Stone, Jim Kelly just to name a few fellow martial artists, world champions and friends/students/teachers of Bruce Lee. Even UFC fighters and Dana White credit him as the "father of mma" and give him his due respect. Why can't you? Think about it and grow.

Damn! How I wish someone said this to me when I was in my 10th grade! Would have changed the direction of my life. But i guess it’s never too late. I’ll keep on trying! Thanks for that coach.

He reminds me of me when I was his age. The best advice I can give him from experience is that don't be afraid to get hurt and don't try to actively avoid it either. Easier said than done, but it will help mentally toughen you up and increase your confidence, which is just as important, if not more important, than your physical prowess. Even though he's young I would say to him to start taking his life a little more seriously but enjoy it at the same time. Don't let others make your life decisions, start really thinking about what you want to do. Key question to ask yourself: What are your values?
