Ran-Day you really did pick a beautiful and capable vessel, she's definitely a head turner. Well laid out deck side and the interior is just gorgeous I can't wait to see what you do with her. I'm really hoping to see you head down to the islands for a season and hopefully you'll share some of your and your families adventures. I really, really hope Captain Q is up to going with or at least visiting for a week or so while your there. Can you imagine what we could learn just while your at anchorage with all the different vessels you'll see and the Captain's expansive knowledge? I'm happy to see the first leg went so well and wish nothing but the best for you and your's. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

West Marine sells a nice hand pump vacuum oil change container that you only have to pump a few times, and will hold six or more quarts. It also has a small tube you can likely stick down your dipstick. Great video thank you for posting.

Randall, Thank you. Your level of communication is astounding. You're articulate and intelligent, and we appreciate all your efforts with both aspects of the channel. Thank you for sharing your experiences with new (to you) boat ownership and with Captain Q! Your honest and sometimes self-deprecating delivery helps bring the humor out of quite frustrating events. We are new owners of a Liberty 458 in Kemah, TX. It seems as though there are new revelations, daily, about the actions of the P.O. Keep 'em coming! Glad to see you are making some headway against some of the things that have been let go, or forgotten, as the boat has been idled. Addressing corners that have been cut as well. You’re learning the boat, and learning new skills, and hopefully reducing your stress level by participating in something different than you do in your workday life. Keep good records, that will help in the future. Thanks for bringing us along on your journey. Take care.

Well said, Carl... that's exactly right... stress goes down with each passing week of familiarity and hobby puzzle-solving. Good point about the record keeping... thankfully shooting videos really helps me keep track of things too...

Thanks for taking us along on your OLD Sailboat renovation adventures. My sailboat was made in December of 1972 and at only 20 feet has no internal engine (has a 4 hp outboard) and almost no electrical system. She was in very nice condition when I got her so "Maintenance on an old boat, . . . what is that?" is how I think. But if I ever get a bigger sailboat, then what I'm watching here could become useful. : - )

Hi Randy. For oil changes, maybe buy a deep well socket with a magnetic insert and appropriate length extension to get at the dip stick nut. That should make changing oil much easier. Someone else mentioned a small electric transfer pump. That will cut oil change time and effort down to a couple of hours instead of all day.

Great video RanDay. I use a Pela pump to remove oil. Rather than directly pumpping oil, your pump creates a vacuum in the reservoir. You pump until you've created a decent vacuum and leave it while it continues to slowly draw under vacuum.

buy a vacuum pump for the oil way easier ! it works better than the electric ones, safer too I had a customer who put an electric one while changing the oil on a brand new fontaine pat Athena 38 with the engine under the berths he went away when he came back the hose in the empty jug had gotten away and it spayed the white skai cabin with oil everywhere ! Changing the oil is my second most hated job on my Hunter 36,(second place to head pump rebuilding). After 19 years I have it down to about an hour using a hand pump for the 3 quarts. Also, I learned that disposable diapers are great for catching the oil when removing the old filter, and one package of 20 diapers lasts for years.

Hope you get some drone footage on your boat sailing. Happy St. Patrick's folks.

Thanks, Friar! Yes, we'd love to go check out Moses' HC44 up close... it's described as 'whimsical' and has a very unique interior layout. He has ambitions to sail the world on it and has set his plans in motion... as far as drone footage goes, I'm still a little apprehensive landing it while sailing (which has mostly been short-handed sailing without a working autopilot) so most shots you'll see are her on a mooring or at the dock.... I'm rebuilding the courage and this year I'll definitely get more of her underway. She's going to look sparkling with all the work that I've been logging. Cheers

Hi quick tip if you havnt a oil filter wrench/grip get a sturdy scredriver longer than the diameter of the oil filter and punch it right through the oil filter then yo twist the old oil filter off using the handle of the driver . also good for hard to remove filters.the new one can be replaced by firmly gripping the oil filter no need for a wrench that over tightens it. Always double check the filter after running an hour just to be sure.dont forget to smear a little oil on the rubber gasket on the oil filter..

Use a vacuum pumped oil change device - 8-10 pumps can generate an good vacuum in vessel which sucks out oil. Until pressure in vessel reaches atmospheric pressure. You’ll only have to repeat a few times to empty sump. Much less work!

Oil samples are highly recommended atleast a few times a year. It will save you from destroying your engine and you'll be able to do a simple rebuild as to buying a new engine. Every bearing and internal part is made of a special materials and the sample test will tell you if you have bearings and where they are that are going out. I really liked your boat when it was on a episode and it seems once you do some maintenance including fixing the crazy wiring you'll have a wonderful sailboat. Last time I looked there was a several really different sailboats for sale in the Maryland area and for a decent price. I know one was a schooner built in the late 80s.

If you're going to run biodiesel fuel you better be prepared to deal with algae that will grow in the tank and ruin your fuel lines especially if it sets for extended periods. If it's going to sit I'd be adding additive to it.

Great video Randay..... Smart idea of getting the Capt. and your new friend join you on your trip.... The first thought that came into my mind when you showed the diesel fuel that you took out of the racor is that you need to get your diesel fuel in your tank polished ASAP.. Ask your Marina if they can recommend a good fuel polishing service in your area.. it's not something you want to do yourself.. Signs of leaking antifreeze is concerning, but may be a simple fix.. but in a tough spot to get to.. And I definitely recommend a electric pump to extract the oil out of the oil pan next time.. they're not expensive, check out harbor freight if you have one in your area..

Congratulations Ran-day on your boat and taking on that project. A note on SAE 30 non detergent motor oil. You can find that at most tractor or farm stores. I run that in old tractors. Didn't you have to bleed the lines once you change fuel filter? Thank you. Pete

Good idea… we think alike… I hit the local tractor supply and was out of luck… took more hunting than I thought it would. Yup, drained the filter lined as much as possible (gravity) so between that and the filter contents I got another 1/2-1 qt of oil out of the system. The remote filter is really handy and I’m glad it’s setup that way… just needs a better mount. Thanks for the note!

Well done Randy.and to your helpers as well. Its is a learning experience for sure. Nice calm water too, & that's a plus. Re the whales we get the smaller minkie whales in the had four and along coast in Nova Scotia as well. They are neat to watch. Some time so e balogas too. Anyway do enjoy the boat & be safe.Tks for the video. I enjoyed it & all your & the capt s content.

Good video! Next time, pull a vacuum through the dipstick hole and it's like magic. As others have mentioned, there's a West Marine manual pump that works really well. One of the few WM-branded items I can wholeheartedly recommend. Also: on your fuel filters -- your primary (the one that screws directly on the engine) is probably a 10micron, so your Racor should be a 20 or 30 micron. In theory, you could damage a delicate diaphragm on the fuel life pump if you make it work against two very fine filters.

Hi. Given how much crap is in the Racor filter, it would make sense to inspect/clean your fuel tank(s). That stuff is coming from somewhere!

Hi Randy, enjoyed the video, my love for sailing started in my early 20's (now 75) with a 16' Hobie Cat which I loved so much, but work and responsibility quickly became my norm, I did help a friend crew a 36' Hunter from Marsh Island, Bahamas back to Cape Canaveral, Florida when I was 57y.o. There's something soothing to the soul when you depend on wind for power. Thanks so much. Norm

Do you think your new friend would let you and the captain do a video of his Hans Christian?? God, what a beautiful boat. I'd love to see that!!

Pick up a dc powered oil changing kit. Comes with a jug to catch the oil. Hand pumping is for the birds.

Thx for the episode. I bought a kit from west marine w a little pump that’s powered by a drill. My Nauticat 44 engine holds 5 gallons of oil. I gave up on the manual pump after about 2 gallons.

I remember encountering a whale off Seal Harbor ME on a Rhodes 19. Then the fog rolled in. Chart sailing home. A great time to put my sailing lessons to work.

Thank you Randay for the "Making Your Engine Happy" video and the introduction of Moses and his restaurant. Hopefully I can make it to Portland, Maine from Portland, Oregon which is nearby where I live. Lots of work maintaining those engines, but well worth it when you have to go and there is no wind to get you there. Take care and best wishes to you and Captain Q and Moses.

changing engine oil on a sailboat is up there with prostate exams! maybe look into a small electric sump pump to facilitate oil extraction. the boat is looking sweet!
