Rana el Kaliouby: This app knows how you feel - from the look on your face

Our emotions influence every aspect of our lives - how we learn, how we communicate, how we make decisions. Yet they’re absent from our digital lives; the devices and apps we interact with have no way of knowing how we feel. Scientist Rana el Kaliouby aims to change that. She demos a powerful new technology that reads your facial expressions and matches them to corresponding emotions. This “emotion engine” has big implications, she says, and could change not just how we interact with machines - but with each other.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). How exactly does this help us reconnect with each other? It seems to me that all it does is more data mining and connects us more to our devices. How does an app responding to our emotions help to connect with humans? I do not see how it is any more effective than skyping, where you can See for yourself the emotions. I see how this is beneficial to businesses/corps, and I do see the benefits for certain disabilities, but not to reconnect emotionally. Perhaps we just need to have new priorities, put down the devices and be real. This is a step toward transhumanism.

***** bla, bla, bla. Bullshit. She's a well lived, successful and smart woman. She's doing this for the same reason why successful smart people do this kind of stuff. Money. Yes, this is nothing but corporate goals being fulfilled, and she's going to be able to give her kids college, houses and cars, like every parent wants to. On the bright side, it may be useful as a lie detector.

She states that our "devices" that we use today seperates us and she wants believes that by putting emotions on devices will bring us back together, how? If you can interact with an ipad and it gives you results or answers based on your emotions you will most likely spend more time talking to SIRI than real people. People that are shy will love this, but we want people to be more social. Her idea is good for small things but the bad outwieghs the good.

@aducksecho
@aducksecho 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. We implemented algorithms that learn an individuals resting expression. Over time the program will correct itself if at first it misidentifies. This is possible because an individual can sustain certain expressions for a limited time before exhausting the facial muscles.

***** let me reiterate what I try and get the mentally enslaved morons like this halfwit, rana el kaliouby, to do. Try Skypeing your loved ones (free) and talk to them, often with tears and that jerkiness in your voice that tells them that you love them and miss them instead of promoting transhumanism like this pathetic overweight halfwit is doing whilst trying to fill her pockets in the process. I am horrified that psychopaths like this are allowed to wander free in the country I was born in!!!

***** You have some serious issues. This algorithm is just a tool. A damn amazing tool in my opinion, but still just a tool. For some, like yourself, it will not be "their cup of tea" and for others it will be the next best thing after sliced bread. There is no eugenics agenda there. In fact from everything I can see, quite the opposite; the example of people on the autism spectrum would obviously be able to better get along with others and thus be easier accepted by others. That's the only bit I'll be feeding you, so please stop trolling.

I do not think that we are entering a world with less emotion involved. In fact, I think that we are becoming much much more emotional as we develop and I do not think this would help at all. People have passed time for centuries. People read books, practiced music, watched grass grow. None of those concepts have needed to read you face.

Where is the talk about "intentions", you know, the middle part between 'emotion' and 'understanding'?! For example, teaching a hard drive to identify facial actions, and not teaching it how to show show back the emotion - to show understanding (which is an intent), or not teaching it ask the right question with respect to the seen emotion - well, will cause to much "misunderstanding". So you think intentions (not emotions) are also conveyed in our facial expressions?

Say someone with aspergers who has little empathy or even the ability to read expressions at all would like to connect with someone. For them the practicality would be that they could gain some kind of insight as to what another feels. The practicality for a person with less altruistic goals might be completely different. Was trying to speak to that.

Great. That way if I'm having a bad day (spilled my coffee, kids were uncooperative in getting ready for school, whatever) I can look forward to a computer singling me out for an interrogation by the TSA. In a job interview it would likely serve to reinforce the status quo and make the truly creative unemployable. Institutions are rarely altruistic and more often than not seek to eliminate those who are, yes it certainly would be an invaluable tool in accomplishing that. The herd seems to feel safer with the shepherd and sheepdog watching over them but rarely notices when one of them becomes dinner. I prefer inherently unsafe freedom over a comfortable enslavement anyday. Let the cowards bask in an ever more watchful security state and homogeneity. This rush to a brave new world is sickening and a profound statement on how inhuman we have become.

Interesting research. Struggle to understand her intention of this “reconnecting” humans together. Her personal example of her family abroad not knowing her emotions were due to her not sharing them. It does not seem to be because she did not understand them but rather her choosing not to share her thoughts. If her computer could pick that up, what benefit would that have in this situation? I understand this can be helpful in some situations as the world becomes more digitalised from a commercial and perhaps even medical point of view (AI conducting initial examinations for example and sensing pain/discomfort) but i do not see it having any positive impact on the social scene and connecting people. We need to work on humans becoming more Emotionally intelligent for that and not AI becoming so.

eddie scythe Well, harming a dog can harm inadvertently harm a human because of their emotional attachment to dogs. Emotional trauma is considered harm. As for a car, well, a robot will have to check every place for a human to hide. Then check the data base if the human who owns the car will give permission to destroy it cuz emotional trauma. Then they will consider destroying it. Bocbo Of course, worse case scenario. Nuke everything.
