i'd like to see a longer interview with Jeff's dad. My dad grew up in rural OK and they didn't have electricity until the '50's I think. They also had an icebox and raised cattle for sale. My grandfather ran a small store and gas station on hwy 29 until he was 79.

We did not have a fridge when I was a child. We had a box made out of a clay material, which I think is only fired once, it is porous. It had a dish shaped hollow on the top and you kept that topped up with water. The water spreads to the whole box, and as it evaporates it draws out heat from within the box. No electricity needed. It lived outside on the north side of the house. I remember putting jelly in it to set. It also had milk in it, though we got milk delivered fresh every day, the milkman had a horse. I remember when the horse was replaced by an electric milk cart, the milkman was not happy about it, because he had to walk further. The horse knew the route and would move on and wait for him.

It was so nice to meet Jeff's dad!! I can now tell where Jeff gets all his energy! When Sam said he was 86 I was shocked. I was thinking he was probably in his 70s! Hope Sam has a good flight back to San Fran! Glad #30 finally had her baby and you got her tagged before mama charged at you too much. Glad the Gator was close so you could get in before she actually made contact! She's definitely a protective mama.

There was a peer-reviewed study done back in the 50-60's (?) that has stuck with me ever since that basically concluded that, over time, hogs are $$-makers. Back when farms were a lot more like yours than most right now. Well, maybe other than that time in the early 2000's when it made sense for Canadians to ship their hogs to the USA to sell for nothing...just a little glitch in the supply: demand ratio lol :)
