James, That's the crazy part. At 400 the 1 click adjustment should have been 1" but it moved much further. I guess I'll have to go back to the ranch and test it again!!!! Nothing more "funner" than blasting away!! Thanks for the comment.

This concept is simply ideal for any shooter who wants or needs to dial to distance rather than holdover, which invites aiming error. I have a Leupold Mk4 M3 with dials for .223, and M118LR. It works and since the reticle is mil scale I can use the scope to range distance to target.

Your 400 yard gong is HUGE!!! If you really want to fine tune your set up make your gongs MOA. That’s what we do.

I got a Ruger American Ranch 350 Legend two years ago. I see Leupold has come out with a Freedom CDS for 350 Legend. Can't wait to get it, zero it to 100 yds and use it deer hunting in 2021.

@@RanchFairy So I finally got my CDS today (pretty quick turn around if you ask me), took it out to the desert, zeroed my scope at 100 yards, and put the new dial on. After 100 yards I went to the next unobstructed spot, 325 yards. I think it was a bit too windy (10-20 mph gusts), as it was causing my shots to go with the wind almost 13 inches left. I was 4 inches high, does that sound normal, or should it had been around 1-2 inches off? After having the wind blow my target over twice, I decided to call it a day and will go back on a calmer day. I have the cds Leupold on my 270 rem sendero. 5 shot 3/4 inch groups at 300 yards. Thats as far as I can shoot here . Love it.

@3:25-ish ... I'm a little confused. You said you need to adjust your scope dial 1 click left for 1" at 100 yds = 4" at 400 yds. I never heard of a rifle scope that move the reticle an entire inch at 1oo yds with just one click. Doesn't your Leupold scope adjust 1/4" (or 1/4 MOA) at 100 yds, which would be 1" at 400 yds?

Yup, getting real close to pulling the trigger on the 3-10-50 CDS for my 270wsm. Been researching it, and it seems like a great system. I hunt the Prairies of Southern Alberta, so long shots on big ole Mulie bucks and Prairie Elk are a must sometimes. And being able to do your dial ups quick is what I need. Still thinking between this or the Nightforce SHV, but that's a heavy bastard. And no custom dials. Well, some after market. I might just spend the money and get one of the Vx6 2-12. Or even 3-18. Damn, too much good quality stuff on the market nowadays. Keeps ya guessing. Not wanting to buy something, then out hunting ya get a peak through a friends scope, and ya wanna sell yours for what he's got.lol Well, someone's getting rich of us hunters. Great review. Almost sold.lol

The dial ups work fantastic. My buddy has the VX 6 CDS on a 7MM mag and they just recently killed a couple Aoudad sheep in West Texas. One at 325 and the other at 505. Dial up, dead hold. I love the Leupold Warranty and haven't had any trouble losing zero. Awesome shooting!! One thing, if you were dead on at 100 but off just a bit at 400, it could be that your scope is slightly canted. If there is the slightest tilt in your scope at distance it will show, but not so much at closer ranges. It will get worse the farther out you shoot. Great job though! That would have been a dead deer at 400...definately a deer great setup you have there!

So currently on the journey deciding what glass to put on my 7mm Rem Mag. Tikka T3x ... I think the Leupold VX-3I 3.5-10x50MM CDS WIND-PLEX is the way to go. I am getting all this figured out for an upcoming October hunt for Moose in Quebec Canada. The area I will be hunting apparently can give me anything from a 20 yard shot to a 1000. I do not have 1000 yards to practice. I can barely manage 650. Frankly I will not shoot past 600 and even that should be a monster that I just can't call in further and just can't let go. Ideally I would like to shoot at 400y and in. So here the question: With a 100yard zero on a CDS dial where would you hold on a 20 shot ??..... would you typically put the crosshair 1.5" or 2" above the spot you want to hit and squeeze off a shot or would you say a dead hold on a moose is good on a 100 yard zero from 0-100? Thank you !!! (I do not like arbitrary "oh it's in the kill zone, it's fine" shooting. I like heart shots which anchor animals within a few yards .... aim small miss small has worked well for me) p.s. Love the energy you bring to your presentation. Keep it up.

goonerdotcom Thanks for the question. The scope you are planning to buy, I do not own, but a friend has that unit on a 300 weatherby mag. It is deadly to 600. On a moose. Short range. Dead hold. The heart is easily grapefruit sized! Have a great time and let me know how the scope works out! CDS is really consistent. Great system.

This is a stupid question but I don't know anything about scopes. So is its 1/4 MOA and I click at 400 yards moves it 1 inch on the windage, does that mean at 400 yards moving 1 click on the top turret you replaced will also move it up 1 inch?

Wireline .Cables Not a stupid question. Ha! Here’s what I know. “I think so”. How about that for an expert answer! Mathematically that makes sense, 1/4” at 100 should be 1” at 4. I’ve had a few people tell me that it’s different. I need to go retest!! Testing is fun. What I DO KNOW. I have many friends and people I’ve talked to who zero spot on at 100 or 200 (you can get CDS that starts at 200) and then they went hunting. I have been on confirmed kills at 360 - 30.06 150 grain SP - mule deer and 430 - 300 WBY Mag - 200 grain SP. both shots hit spot on. That’s what I’d do and then we can play around and see what happens!!! Keep the Ranch Fairy Nation posted if you find anything new. CDS is totally cheating! It’s great

I purchased a Leupold VX-3i 4.5x14mm CDS, I have it mounted on a .308 Remington tactical. I had some problems with Leupold getting it to zero. I went to a gunsmith and we worked it out. From my zero of 100 yds. it would shoot plastic bottles at 350 yards. something went haywire and I was looking at a nice buck at 300 yds. No problems to this point. The scope was set one number 1. I had the rifle barrel out the window of a permanent stand with the dial on # 1. I turned to # 3 on my CDS and it would not turn. It was jammed. Now Maybe somone can give me some advice, but I am totally pissed. As many Leupolds I have owned (this is my first CDS ) I cannot figure this out, here in the middle of deer season. Thanks

I want to know how this CDS dial will change when made 800ft elevation to 8,000ft elevation.. how many clicks of 1/4 MOAs worth will it change? I hunt mostly locally at 800ft elevation but also wanna use the same set up for mountain hunt. No $ to buy any more rifle and scope according to my wife😢

There is nothing magic about it, it just counts clicks for you, but I love it on my 270 hunting rifle. For a tactical match rifle, I want more precision and adjustability, but for hunting, I love the speed and ease of this system.

So when you made your 1 click adjustment to the left ... you took off the CDS dial and put the original dial back on? Then you Zeroed the rifle ... and then put the CDS Dial back on? Nice Shooting

Not, sorry I didn't clarify. CDS is elevation only. The windage nob is still factory. One of my friends said "well, technically, it should have only moved 1". I agree. But I was just thinking about the overall effect and "Guesstimated" that one click would move "further". It worked. The conditions were very stable. Almost zero wind, about 50 degrees, pretty high humidity, but nothing crazy. I have been very impressed with the CDS. Add a Leupold rangefinder and it really makes you an incredible shot. 400 just isn't that big a deal. Cheating......is awesome and helpful for cleanly taking game. Great video! If you were dead on at 100 and then off a little at 400 for windage, did you check to make sure the reticle isn't canted a little? As you said, it was good enough to kill a deer, but just a thought.

So a lot of the "lower end" Leupold have the standard CDS nowadays and the VX3 and up have a ZL dial where it locks the zero. Have you had any issues while out carrying the gun or having it in and out of a case where not having a locking dial has allowed it to move? I have a few with the CDS-ZL already but am considering getting one with the standard non locking dial. My only concern is the turret moving on my while out hunting and I don't notice it when I am presented with a quick shot. Have you had that happen yet?

I’d buy a vertical turret that starts at 200 and zero at 200. I didn’t do that and it’s on a 264 win mag - zero at 200 For that gun is a dead hold from 0-200. The normal 100 turret will dial up to probably 500. Depending on cartridge So it doesn’t really matter Range finder assumed

photokendall Howdy, great question. You can get a zero stop or not. Mine does not, when I get another one I will get a zero stop. One thing I would do different is start the dial at 200 yards instead of 100. That way you extend your range. Thanks for watching.

Ok. I'm understanding the simplicity.. but given ballistic behavior.. this simply can't work at different altitudes. This scope knob can only stay accurate at the altitude you are set up for. Lets say we have a 7mm Rem Mag. Hornady ELD-X Factory Load of 162 grains (0.631 G1-BC) @ 2940 fps. Zero of 100 yds. Let's say your hunting in Austin, Texas (~500 ft. above sea level ~ 29.40 hg). Your 400 yds. your low 24.24 inches from zero. Now go to Colorado Springs, Colorado (~6,000 ft. above sea level ~ 24.12 hg). Same gun, same load, same setup, same temp & humidity .. Your 400 yds is now only 22.70 inches low from zero. Extend that to 800 and you have a difference of 130.26 inches to 146.28 inches... I just don't know how practical this can be for the traveling hunter, or just long range shooting in general. For hunting in your backyard every day... I can dig it. I guess limitations show up everywhere.

Nikko Leupold is a bunch of geniuses! You order the nob - for altitude as well. They will ask for your average or if you want to build a mountain set up and a desert mule deer set up. Change nobs

Thanks for the question. From what I understand, the CDS vertical nob will make one full revolution. If you're shooting a fast round like the .264 or 7mm you'll get more out of the turn than you will a slower round.

You can call leupold and let them know that you want another revolution. So they can actually go into the scope and change some of the internals and you can get an extra revolution. I actually just got off the phone with them about that

Correct on this. The 264 is a wildcat with a short lived life, replaced by the very popular 7mm magnum. Caliber doesn't really matter, Leupold will make you a CDS nob for any caliber. Call them, tell them what you are shooting, the BC, speed, etc. and place your order.

Sorry, missed somthing: IT IS VERTY IMPORTANT to find out what ammo your gun likes (you may already know this). That particular rifle LOVES the Nosler Trohy Grade Ammo pushing a 130 nosler accubond. You figure that out (for your gun), then call Leupold and order the nob, for the ammo your gun like. Super easy. My buddies have them on 7mm, 308, etc. Great performance.
