Every time I think I have seen the most complicated Tomy gear mechanism, and then you find something that is even more complicated. Also, I know it is not possible due to copyright, but in my head "paint it black" by the Stones was playing during the painting :-) What I don't understand about that static charge effect with the paint is that it continues after you have touched the paint brush to the piece. With static electricity I would expect it to equalize at that point. Fascinating stuff!

It always amazes me how they can do so much with just one motor. What's weird is how less complicated these are getting to me. You start seeing repeated techniques.

@@RandiRainregarding that gearbox although I'd actually called this a multiplexer of sorts. I have also seen occasionally toys that would use some sort system of clutches and one or more solenoids combined with motor reversing as well this is a bit more elegant probably easier to control in Hardware. But the mechanical complexity is the the king here but very clever indeed! As a matter of fact I'm actually an adult fan of Lego! I'm actually worked on a few ideas to do something like this except a lot more complex even being able to have numerous mechanical outputs from say 2 Motors. However not getting any sensors and using just standard older Motors without any encoders. It's actually one motor would control for reverse power output. The other when rotated One Direction would select the output and when in ran in reverse of that direction resets the mechanism to the first output being default so all you have to do is run one motor forward to select and no sensor feedback required. As long as you remember to run Dean select motor in Reverse you're always knowing you're in default output. Besides this could be used manually for something that is being on mote control say some sort of barge Contraption or otherwise not only adaptable to something like Mindstorms 9 volt range. Easily adaptable to even using two of the 12-volt Motors and two of the control switches the momentary ones from the Technic manual control center not very computer Technic control center for 9 volt system this was earlier 4.5 V from Lego education. The control switches were based on the 12-volt train control switches for track points the level crossing and the track signals except for just a momentary version think it's just double pole double throw award for reversing but I've not seen the back of the electrical switches as of yet

@@RandiRainalso that gearbox does remind me in a way of the one from the Radio Shack armatron not the mobile Armitron but the original. The idea was there was a simple spending shaft with essentially two-speed clutches. And the fingers would catch on these as the controls were operated. Ingenious mechanism I did have the Armitron robot originally it was in rough shape but it was fun to play with still in the end one of the gears somewhere had broken completely it was time to do some Salvage did reuse some things out there including the motor but really seen that intriguing control skiing was really almost worth it! Also the little slip clutches those got repurposed for some custom Lego stuff back in the day the clutches were not available not even slip clutches yeah sure you can rig up a way to do it but not officially supported for a specific parts to do this back in the day. Found some of those custom parts and so my custom stuff the other day still getting The Big Short done at this time back into it big time after all these years! I remember one set they were using vintage Louis belt drive as a Slip clutch. At least in this one set perhaps others? I'm referring to a technic space shuttle for the output from the gearbox that goes to open the shuttle Bay I think that was really the first one to have that many outputs on a gearbox which did incorporate the clutch parts it almost look like a stricture of arrangement except instead of multiple gears you had multiple mechanical outputs at the time I remember that was one of most complicated sets there was at least I had built in terms of mechanical

OMG you had the paint thing happen! I had it happen one time in my life when I was painting a model. I've never got it to happen again. I always thought that if one was able to some how induce this effect and make it happen on purpose that it would be a useful painting technique. I was never able to replicate it. I even bought the same model again and nothing.

It had something to do with the flat black spray paint. To replicate it, that's what I would try. Flat black spray paint on plastic.

As for building one working 1 out two or more non-working ones I've done this numerous times and various devices I've seen people have the same thing go out over and over at various ways but still have workable parts! Because of different things happening to the same devices but different ones of them. Few times I heard that they said they had multiple ones failed and still had them. I said would you like to have at least one working one out that they're like really and I said sure could use a good chance of it and success and spare parts in some cases for the one from the old

It's the flame retardant chemical they put in plastic that causes oxidation, a strange property of that is that direct sunlight is fine but light passing through glass accelerates the discoloration, so toy shop windows are the worst place for them. However it seems like nearly the whole batch of Verbots got it the worst since most of the other Omnibots never get this yellow/brown. I actually think your solution of painting them makes more sense than retro-brighting them, always thought Verbot needed a splash of any color since it's a bit monochromatic in color scheme. If I get one I think I'll try Cherry Red. ;)

I looked into the yellowed plastic issue a while ago. The explanation seems to be UV light exposure causing breakdown of some of the polymer chains which produces the color change and brittleness. That it varies from peace to peace piece to piece, frequently across batches but even within the same batch, is well documented and seemingly not well understood. There are theories that break down of a bromide compound which was commonly used as a fire retardant in the '80s is part of the problem.
@RandiRain2 жыл бұрын
That doesn't explain why one piece does it and the other doesn't.

Spray paint on plastic rarely looks good, like almost never. For me, it always comes out looking too thick and unnatural and very obviously spray painted. BUT, I have found spraying with acrylic model paints looks MUCH better. In some cases, as good as factory painted plastics. You can now get an air brush with a cheap pump for well under 50 dollars. I was watching a model train guy using these inexpensive air brushes painting his own 3d printed train car shells and they looked fantastic, like it came in that color from a factory. So I tried it myself on some plastic stuff I needed painting and had the same great results with some cheap acrylic paint my father had given me. You can do finer work with it as well.

I never paint plastic unless I don't really care, and want that roughness look of it. If I want color and do care, I will remake it and dye the plastic.

Hi Randi, I just found a verbot at a local flee market that is in almost perfect condition the only yellowing is on the arms. The Remote is also with it, everything lights up and the bot also is able to recognize my voice, the only problem is when I give it a command it doesn't do anything...any thoughts?
@RandiRain Жыл бұрын
Is the motor running? How do you know it can recognize your voice if it doesn't do anything? The motor should be running all the time. If not, give it a few bops. I've had that fix a robot more than once. If not, I have no idea.

10:50 You rubbed on the plastic (10:32). It looks like you were rubbing away some dirt or spec of paint and it put a charge on the plastic. Certain plastics build up static electricity very easily. I have to say, that was impressive. I have never seen paint or water ever jump an inch through the air like that!! You probably couldn't do it again if you were actually trying to do it!!!

Why not retrobright them? Do you oppose retrobrighting? I'm generally not for retrobrighting in the context of old computers and old game consoles (SNES is notorious for this yellowing as are most computers), but there reaches a point where there is nothing to lose because the yellowing is so ugly. If you're going to paint them away, why not try retrobrighting first? Getting them back to their original color is far preferable to paint.
@RandiRain2 жыл бұрын
I retrobright all the time. This was beyond retrobriting. It would just come right back if you got anywhere. Not to mention it could make the plastic even more brittle. That's why I painted it. Because it was beyond getting back to white.
