Huh, someone made a programming language out of Conway's Game of Life. Gives me flashbacks of a copyright protection mechanism in the old Commodore 64 game Zone Ranger. It was a fairly typical space shooter, but if you flew into one area on a bootlegged copy, the world would explode into a surreal, glitched out mess and you'd find yourself flying between random snippets of text and game assets before inevitably touching something that would make you explode. I get the feeling, old/retro tech like this straddles the threshold between our world and Plato's world of Forms.
@dragondragon8546 Жыл бұрын
Conway's game of life has more direct variants, which I think have varying degrees of proofs for turing completeness. Personally I think it's cool but kinda impractical, but art doesn't need to be practical, so it's as good a medium as any. Can't wait for brainfuck's doom release to happen. (A joke because there's probably already a brainfuck version of doom)
@Schnort10 ай бұрын
Do you know where I can find footage of this Zone Ranger C64 copy protection mechanism? I really want to see what it looks like, but I'm not finding any relevant results from youtube and google searches.
@Eidako10 ай бұрын
@@Schnort Not surprising -- a specific copy of an obscure game from 40 years ago isn't going to have many surviving artifacts. It's only because of the efforts of half-crazy archivists that we even have longplay videos from that era. Since my memory is the only evidence of the glitch I know of, all I can do is use circular logic and say it looked a lot like this video. XD

@Ongomato Жыл бұрын
@@ThatMathEnjoyer Sorry for late reply. It's a music making tool. Orca is a programming language for controlling musical instruments, that is represented in a nice visual way. Each symbol is either some data or an operator that read, modifies or creates that data. It's very fun to play with, and you can make some interesting complex stuff in it. It doesn't make sound by itself though, it just generates midi signal.

Hearing an iterator even process anything probably sounds like this, and with the wavers of tone is a thought moving to another, an idea moved to another idea. Thank you for this! Thanks to you, I found this program, it is very interesting to learn. Now I roughly understand what happens on the screen. Moreover, you made it not just a melody, but an art! Which sample did you use? Is it more than one?
@Ongomato Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad this inspires people to check out the program! The art aspect of the patch was a lot of fun to do and it evolved naturally over the iterations, almost as if it made itself. As for the samples, there's a bit more going on behind the scene that i didn't show in the video, there's a whole Reaper project with a bunch of tracks(5 or 6 of them iirc) one is splitting notes and sending to the rest of them. Each track uses Vcv rack to generate sound, so it's all synthesized in real time. The sounds are an approximation of what I'm hearing in the original, and it was kinda hard to get close to the sound and i think it has a lot of room for improvement still. In the end it was supposed to be more about Orca and less about sound synthesis so i guess it's ok.

Awesome dedication here, simply Phantastic! would you mind telling us what is the synth you used behind or where the sound is actually generated please?
@Ongomato Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Sure, so, i send the midi signal to a DAW(I'm using Reaper), there it gets split into 3 different channels based on velocity and then routed to 5 different tracks(serving as instruments basically) The only synth is VCV Rack(virtual modular) and most of the signal generation and filters are Surge XT modules. There's also an improvised FM synth on one of the tracks, but it's all very hacked together just to make it work for this particular project. Most of the time i'm not very happy with the rigidity of normal synths and when i know what i'm doing VCVRack allows me to build exactly what is needed, so yeah, great synth!
