Awesome video! My battery became problematic and needed changing, autozone and O'Reilly wouldn't install and dealership quoted $200 for installation alone. This video really helped me DIY and save $$$. My car is back on the roads! While installing, the jumper cable lost contact for a few secs twice but when I finished, all my data was still intact!

Thanks for your feedback. Yes, I noticed too on my friends 2017 Prius that not data was lost but you may lose you drive monitor data. That is used for emissions purposes.

Thank you for the instructive video! The tip about keeping the keys away from the car was not something I would have thought about. I was able to successfully replace my battery, seemingly without a disruption to the power (no settings or clock times lost). For anybody reading this, my car was showing symptoms for (weeks, months) that the battery was having problems, but I didn't realize that they were indicative of a failing 12V battery. To wit, the most obvious symptom was that the car seemed to have a power hiccup upon starting--when I would push the start button it would hesitate to start--looking briefly like what it does when it can't sense the key--but the continue on after this brief blip. I measured the battery voltage with the car off (i.e. maximally unloaded but still connected) at 9.6V. So yeah, kaput. Thanks again!

I would like to thank you for this very helpful video. While I have swapped out my car battery on my 1991 Ford Mustang GT a great many times, I wasn't sure about the process on my 2016 Toyota Prius (Touring); there's a 25 year difference between both vehicles. In regards to the Mustang, the Prius does have a few more steps when removing the battery but it's not that much harder. Your DIY video did a fantastic job of making the Prius battery replacement process easy to follow and not complicated. On a side note, my Prius did retain my radio station, map data, and Bluetooth link to my cel phone after I disconnected the battery without maintaining a constant power flow to the Pirus's memory banks. However, the clock and calendar had to be manually updated, and the backing up and forward parking proximity sensors took a short time to reset and reactivate on their own. The emission data was lost but that isn't a problem for me because I don't plan to get the car smogged anytime soon. Thanks again for your video... :)

Well done video. I had the entire thing done in less than 10 minutes. The details including bolt sizes was invaluable. Also, I didn't bother bridging the battery during the switch. The radio setup was not affected by the power disruption, but the clock needed to be reset. Not sure how it affected the smog data, but not really concerned about it. It did clear my trip log but didn't reset my MPG data.

I don't know as I try to keep all my data.thr battery charge may work if it's not smart charger as those look voltage before powering on but again it may.

Thank you so much for this amazing informative video! I’ve bought an AGM Interstate H5 (47) battery for my 2018 Camry Hybrid LE (4th gen hybrid). The car is 5yr 3mo old and with 159K miles. After jumpstarting a few times the original battery in this cold New York City weather I decided to get this new one. I have already bought the emergency memory saver OBD 2 Kit from Amazon which I’m planning to hook up with my Tacklife T6 jump-starter that has a cigarette lighter port outlet. Is there anything else I need remember to do? Somebody mentioned in a different article that there is a temperature sensor in the OEM battery that needs to be taken off and put with adhesive on the new battery which I’m not so clear about. Will be waiting for your response. Thank you again 🙏.

great instructional video! I need some expertise to help me locate the 12V battery on my 2018 Prius C. I cant believe it is so hard to find! I looked under the hood and in the trunk, with no success. I was told I could reboot the sound system by briefly disconnectingh the battery. How can they hide such an important part to a car?

Sorry for the later reply, your battery on the 2018 Prius c is under the rear passenger side seat. You will see a cutaway once you open the rear passenger side door. Above the cutaway there should be a pull clip that will let access the battery with ease. Good luck

A helpful video, but I have a few corrections. You mentioned at 0:50 that this procedure applies to other Priuses, but the Gen2 Prius has the 12V battery in the trunk, so a little more disassembly is required. It's not too bad, but folks will want to watch a dedicated video. Also, please drop a link to some interior LEDs that fit the Gen4 - I'd love to support the channel. Please mention the battery group code for the Gen2. Supposedly the NAPA part # BAT 75140R fits, but I'd like to get confirmation.

Could I use this a regular lead acid battery ? The Walmart by me sells brand new ones for $55 with 535 CCA . Is there a certain group sizing you used for the replacement ?

Inland E / Yes, you can. Just make sure it fits inside the tray and the plus-minus posts are on the correct side. Don't forget to charge it with a battery charger before you put in the car, because it can have some lost capacity even if it's brand new.

@@RANDOMFIX yes I did , I went with a AGM H4 from Walmart ( 4 year warranty ) for $159 , but I have found out that 4th gen Prius can use Group 26 batteries ( non AGM ) which you can find at Walmart for $60 with 1-2 year warranty.

Battery group number 140 REXT for all Prius after 2016. Oreilly has to special order them $189. And they give you 22 dollars back if you return the old battery.

After replacing my buddy's battery last week I suggest change to a suitable optima battery. Screw the crappy lead acid battery. The Prius doesn't need a lead acid battery because it doesn't start the motor. The fluid acid is for peak amperage.

It's a regular battery so you don't need to spend $$$ as it's not an agm battery as you are restricted because it can vent outside the car under the hood.

😢 I got a brake pump failure message take to dealership. But i cant take to dealership since it doesn't start. How would you reset that message so i can start the car? Is it ok to take off negative terminal and put back on to fix the error message? That way i can jump start it.

Thank you for reaching out and this is very easy process. The cables are only providing power to keep the computer's memory. Hooking up the cables is optional but highly recommended especially if you need a smog test in the next 3 or so months. There is also a cheap device you can buy like in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpPHdaJ4jaicd5o So you don't need jumper cables if you use that memory keeper device. With a typical car, when you jump a dead battery, you should have the car with the good battery running while you do so (keeps the battery charged). But in this case, the good battery is really only being used for a small amount of power to keep the electronics powered, so it should be fine to leave the second car off.

There only one 12 volt battery. In the 2nd and 3rd generations premiums models the battery was in the trunk area on the right. This 4th gen Prius only has this one 12 battery in under the hood. The Prius c ( the smaller version ) had the battery sometimes under the rear passenger side seat.

1. Went to autozone and they looked up 2017 prius and the only option was the Optimus or AGM battery. Brought it home and realized it isn't even the right type, because the terminal doesn't even fit. What is the battery group size for the 2017 ?

H4 is the battery size I believe. I went with the AC Delco LN1 AGM from. Summit Racing. $142 shipped! Better than anything I could find locally. Comes with a 36 month warranty.

I followed this video without the backup power part, and it worked at first. But it's the next day, and the battery is totally dead. Like no electronics, no key lock, nothing. No idea what it could be.

Check the connection to make sure nothing is loose or corroded. If the connection are good, check the voltage at the battery and if the battery is reading a voltage under 11 volts you most like a have a draw ( something is staying on in your Prius) and you need to further investigate. Where did you get battery from ? Was it new?

Wow, okay, well I didn’t get it from the dealer, I normally buy at o’rielys auto parts or Walmart. If you have the option of buying a agm do it. These batteries suck. You seem like you are to please and I hope you find some way of appreciating any effort anyone puts into helping you.
