Have you noticed if the MPG of the car has gotten better with the new battery? We have the 2007 Prius and it is still going strong. Had some electrical problems such as A/C fan and now almost a year without issue. Wondering if I should jump at the possibility of replacing the battery before it is necessary. I think the MPG is right around 40-43 MPG. I remember when I first got it, I got almost 600 mile per tank. Not sure what it is now since my kids have been driving it for the past 4 years. I am more careful with it than they are.

I'm an electrician. Trained by the US Navy and over 30 years in that field so, legit. A word on electrical safety. Once you had the battery together and started the car there was upwards of 200 volts on the two high voltage connections on the battery. In your next step, you held solid metal tools and the cable strain relief clamp plate right over the high voltage connections. If you had dropped them or touch those connections you would have been shocked or sparks would fly. It could ruin your new battery as well or start a fire. Please be careful during this step. You need to put a piece of plastic or something nonconductive over the high voltage connections while the covers are not in place. Safety first. More people get electrocuted off of 120 volts than any other voltage and I guarantee those high voltage connections have a higher voltage than that. Food for thought. I love your videos Chris and I am a subscriber so keep up the good work. I support your channel and all the charity work you do Chris.
@chrisfix6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Those wires are coming off of solenoids and they are not active when the car is off and or the battery safety plug is removed which is why I remove the safety plug right away before touching the battery. Not only does it half the voltage but it opens up the circuit on the battery since it is in series. There are no wires or bare metal that can be contacted that is "live" or "hot" as it is all covered or sealed. That is part of the safety design done by Toyota. Now that doesnt mean you cannot be more cautious and I appreciate your advice!

By far, the best thing to do to keep track of where bolts go is once you remove a piece you partially screw bolts back into their holes by hand. It will save so much frustration of remembering where they go and the possibility of forgetting. The only downside is the little bit of extra time of taking them out again when u want to replace things but it's worth it

Getting into the Rich Rebuilds territory, but with a Prius!
@haroldtheraypist87742 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to share my experience. I took my car to my mechanic and he told me it was about a 97% chance that I had a dying hybrid battery. He said he doesn't deal with hybrid systems which is respectable. He told me my best bet was to go the dealer because at least I will know it gets done right. That's decent advice if you have cash to spend but me being a broke caveman decided I would rip my sisters 07 prius battery out and shove it into my 06. (lucky for me she just bought a new car 4 days prior to this so she sold me the battery for super super cheap) Using only this video and 200 dollars worth of harbor freight tools I was able to successfully perform the delicate operation in a mere 9 hours. So far, so good! I can't express how insanely great this video is! In my case I didn't have to open the battery core which made the job a lot easier, but after dismantling the first prius and reassembling it, the experience and guiding from this video made me knowledgeable to dismantle the second one after with only a few references for remembering which way that fan goes... was it up? down? left? Again, I'm a caveman so I retreated to my den and waited for my stone tablet to load up this video so I could reference it. I also have to mention that you should never buy a 30 piece ratchet set for $5 at harbor freight. after finally testing the swapped battery in my 06 and confirming it worked, I oogaboogad in glee. I quickly began screwing the battery covers back on and that's when disaster struck. My 20 cent ratchet adapter snapped in half, leaving me with a 3/8 drill and only a 1/4 socket. Anyways that sucked. Also pro tip, don't drop the negative battery lead screw from the 12v into the battery crevice. It sucks because you can't retrieve it without a magnet, taking out the battery or shoving your scrawny arms in the 1 inch fissure and hoping you can find it in all the water that's probably in there. Anyways, great tutorial, perfect 5/7, if anyone read this far then you are a legend. peace.

This video is extremely well done; however, as a professional ASE Master Technician, I am very concerned that people weren't cautioned about the potential risks of handling these very high voltage batteries. I was especially concerned @ 12:00 min mark where you did not verify a proper disconnect, using a voltage meter, before touching the terminals. Professionals wear "High Voltage" gloves (same a utility workers) and use a class III volt meter to verify disconnect before proceeding. I admit that the chances of an accidental electrocution are low, but the voltage/amperage potentials should not be ignored and the proper testing @ 12:00 minute mark could prevent someone from getting seriously injured or worse. Except for the safety concern, I want to complement you on an excellent video.

@@8180634 - You are right about " Copper Bus Bars ", I see that too. But as you can see, corrosion was attacking it. As far as I know, once corrosion attack Copper..., it leaves little holes and degrade the Copper. Once Copper is degraded, Electrical Field travel limited and Charging / Discharging would weaken the Batteries. I think he did the right move by replacing the Bus Bars. Although I still stick to my original post with " Dielectric Grease ", so either route would be aok through time.

Very detailed video, absolutely precise. It shows everything important and nothing unimportant. Just two things: on my Prius, the side carpet elements also have a bolt on the bottom, next to the seat. Plus, if you replace the rubber pipes to a new silicone, the prius odor will diminish.
@flagmichael6 жыл бұрын
Another detailed video with your characteristic amazing videography! I would add one thing and amplify another, and add a note. The corrosion is not actually normal; it is the result of the battery seal problem that caused the battery to fail. Sometime toward 2010 Toyota got a grip on it. Next, nobody should *ever* replace individual modules. Since the battery ECU reports trouble based on difference in module voltages, adding new ones to old will make the symptoms worse! Finally, if anybody disconnects and reconnects the battery in a first generation Prius (the sedans from 2001-2003) they should be aware that the Triangle Of Death is likely to be displayed the first three times the system is started. It will clear on the fourth go. Oh! Finally, a safety warning. That corrosion powder contains sodium or potassium hydroxide. If it gets in the eyes it is extremely serious. Goggles would be a bit much, but care not to touch the skin with the gloves is critical.

Fabulous! I was lucky when my 2005 Prius' battery failed. Warranty is 10 years or 150,000 miles. I had 144,000 miles and it would have been 10 years old in a month. Whew! Thanks for posting this. RichE San Diego

Thank you Chris especially for the tip about cleaning the Fan, I had a dealer in Sweden replace the battery 2 years ago (25000 km) and paid around $2500 for it. I checked the workorder today and it says nothing about cleaning the fan so i am now asking the dealer if it is standard to do that or not. Probably i should check it out either way. Who knows, that could have been the reason the original battery broke.

The pack usually fails due to electrolyte dry up, which is caused by heat. A single cell gets depleted and reverses polarity at high discharge -> shorts -> failed cell -> failed module -> failed pack. Ways to make it last longer - keep the battery cool, esp. during the summer. The battery gets cooled by the cabin air, so use AC. Clean the FAN every now and then - certainly more often than 10 years. Don't park the car in the sun if possible, tint rear windows, etc, etc. Beyond that, grid chargers/dischargers (so called conditioners) can prolong the life of the battery, but it's a bit of an uncharted territory. Research and make your own conclusions before deciding on getting one - they're not cheap and the prices of new packs from Toyota are still dropping... and you're getting improved batteries as well - gen 4 cells in your case, most likely.

@@chrisfix The dealer says that the person that did the job doesn't work there anymore so he cannot ask him. He can only assume that all parts near the battery would have been serviced too, but he doesn't say if it standard procedure so it obviously depends on the ambition of the technician himself and is up to him to decide whether to do this important step or not.

@@SpiritLwerewolf Good info. This is one of the reasons I bought a used Chevy Volt when I was looking for a cheap used electric vehicle. It was designed with a very efficient liquid cooling system for the battery instead of air cooled, so the batteries are not failing like they are on the Leaf and Kia Soul etc.
@SpiritLwerewolf6 жыл бұрын
@@TheDeezelsmoke Lithium ion chemistries appear to be way more susceptible to high temperature/state of charge damage than ni-mh, so that applies even more to your case :) Of course, different chemistries and variations thereof have different tolerances. Now to figure out why Toyota chose to air-cool its lithium packs.

Have done this job on several Prius, Chris directions are exactly right. I am not a mechanic. The hardest part is making sure you remember which bolts go back where. Make sure you have power tools, and do what he says, easy peasy, very possible to do in one day.
