This Used Gaming PC Is a 5GHz Fire Hazard (Pt. 1)

I recently picked up a second hand AMD FX 9590 prebuilt gaming PC online with the intention to sell the internal components individually, after testing out the performance of course. However, I couldn't help notice that a couple of the components weren't up to the job of keeping the notoriously power hungry 220W power supply under control.
Today I want to discuss what I found inside this used machine and talk about the upgrades that could be made in order to get this system working safely.
Thanks for watching :)

OK so I gave the 850 generic psu a go in a ryzen 2400g pc and it shut down after an hour. Not sure what to make of that but I'm glad I didn't use it here. Also, turns out the 550ti from this machine doesn't work :(

Dammit...that's a shame about the 550ti. I wonder if it got damaged by the over-rated CPU causing power flux on the motherboard? Maybe give it an oven treatment?

My guess is that the previous owner cannibalized the power supply and GPU to put in his next build, and tossed in a cheap PSU and GPU just to sell it.

Yeah realistically who'd buy something like a 9590 which was never cheap and pair it with an at least two year old, $150 MSRP low-end video card? The 550 Ti was actually probably closer to $50-$75 street value by the time the 9590 was released. The 700 series was out by then, at least the high-end parts, and the still-last-gen GTX 650 cost slightly over $100 when it was new.

@@dycedargselderbrother5353 well.. When I build my pc in 2013 I initially had a 4770k in it and started up with a single GTX 770. Later down the line I threw in a second one for sli as they became cheaper.. That was my trick back then. But well I gave one of them away and left just one in there as I sold it. i had an fx 8350 on a £30 motherboard (literally the cheapest i could find) and had no idea why my fps would spike down every few minutes. Didn't help that i used a aio cooler so wasnt getting the passive air over the VRM's. The only way i could cool it was to literally fit a fan directly on the back of the motherboard behind the VRM'S and never had the fps spikes again. That poor motherboard kept on going for years though.

Lonnie Murray yep, and even my 4 phase mATX ($40 new in 2015) allows for similar high clocks. I had mine at 300w on the CPU (increase from the wall hitting Cinebench button) with a 120mm AIO, and it lasted for years doing some 24+ hour fluid simulations pegging it 100% and ran fine with $3 in VRM cooling mods. My board only allows up to 1.7Vcore, so it wasn’t able to fry when the CPU was sub-zero when I really wanted to push it (kinda disappointed...). Still does fine, it just won’t allow high enough voltage for liquid nitrogen or even my phase cooler (which I’ve used for testing long term effects of -60c over nearly a years span, nothing bad happened, not such story for GPUs though... the BGA solder on GPUs cracks from the cold thermal cycles...) It would VRM throttle around 180-220w CPU power (granted, I only had 1 case fan, and that was my 120mm AIO fab exhausting), but after adding 2x 40mm cheap fans and some hearsinks on the chokes it has no issues really pushing the power well beyond 300w for 24/7 full load (my case was quite frankly terrible... so that’s even more impressive!)

Intel? They’ve been setting fire to even $1,700 boards, melting the sockets and burning scorch marks on the chips with even water cooling and nothing real extreme. I’m shocked the 600w 7980XE (mild overclock on water, around 4.6 GHz for 600w and then it goes crazy high) doesn’t set boards on fire (maybe it does but I haven’t heard of it being a major problem like the 28 core, meanwhile Threadripper 32 core is super efficient and doesn’t melt boards even on LN2). One of the last comments someone sent me was they fried a 10 phase VRM on a typical 5 GHz 9900k overclock... damn... I pull more power on FX and still my 4 phase budget board was fine... it’s getting kinda insane on power draw over on team blue! It’s putting FX to shame, lol!

@@jakegarrett8109 ok I'm gonna lay this out real simple. There are only a few 5.0ghz CPUs, practically at least. 7600k 7700k 8086k 9900k 8700k 2600k 2500k Fx9590 And maybe a few other Intel x or overclocked fx CPUs. Now this channel typically has old parts, that rules out 8700k and a few others, cheap parts, rules out the XE or X products. So really all that's left is the 2500k, 2600k, and 9590, which one of those uses litteraly double the power as the others? So as I said, "only one cpu this can be" And stop comparing an 18 core to an "8 core"/other CPUs that aren't 18 core CPUs, you make the rest of anyone who defends amd look stupid.
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 5 жыл бұрын
M.Streicher I was comparing it to 32 core Threadripper (which still uses less power when overclocked to beyond 4 GHz), plus any 8 core burning 10 phase boards in normal clocks is scary. But you’re saying there are few 5 GHz chips Except basically every Intel gen since 2nd gen (3rd gen did 5Ghz, same with 4th gen, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, I mean, basically any k series since a while!), and with FX added, that means basically half the CPUs since like the last 7 years... that’s basically all except Ryzen... so how is that a few chips?

TDP and Total power usage are 2 different values... so technically it's not a 220w cpu... just throwing that out there.

I used to have a 9590 in my main system. It's not really uncommon to exceed 300W at the EPS connector
@ericandruszko7563
@ericandruszko7563 5 жыл бұрын
@@David-wh8zs I was talking about the difference in TPD vs TDP. TDP is about heat dissipation, TPD is power usage. 220w is the heat measurement of what the chip will output. Your actual power usage for that given component is going to likely be 1.5x that, or more, since the excess heat given off (denoted by TDP) is inefficiently used energy that needs to be dissipated.
@David-wh8zs
@David-wh8zs 5 жыл бұрын
While TDP != Power usage, especially not at the EPS connector since you have to consider switching losses, most of the power consumed is converted into heat.
@ericandruszko7563
@ericandruszko7563 5 жыл бұрын
@@David-wh8zs Yes, that's what I was saying >.> TDP may be 220w, but that is all byproduct of the actual power used by the CPU. So the real power draw is higher than 220w. Any loss outside that CPU component isn't considered there, nor is it relevant.
@David-wh8zs
@David-wh8zs 5 жыл бұрын
@@ericandruszko7563 The additional power consumption caused by signaling really is minuscule, in the sub-200mw range, I would go as far as saying that the TDP is rarely exceeded as long as you are not stepping out of spec (That involves boost). What I was originally trying to say that the TDP of the 9590 was underestimated by a lot.

I work as a PC tech and I remember a customer buying (not from us) a machine with an FX-9590 or 9570 can't remember, with a €40 aftermarket air cooler and an AsRock 970 board. The computer wasn't working very well, so we updated the BIOS... and it had a message saying the processor wasn't supported and wouldn't boot past there. So we downgraded the BIOS, underclocked the CPU to FX-8370 levels (4 GHz) and the processor would pass all tests, including thermal. I think the VRMs couldn't keep with the 220W TDP of the CPU at stock speeds. This was in 2015 or so, so it was still an OK computer (but a terrible buy). I think the customer kept using the computer for at least a couple of years. Keep the motherboard, underclock the processor. Or don't, and see how toasty the VRMs are after a couple of hours in Prime95. I would be interested in that. :D

A 5Ghz, all-core overclocked FX-9370 is my daily driver. In the peak of summer, I (sometimes) crank it down to 4.8, and in the dead of winter, with mods, I can get it to 5.1, 5.25 just for desktop screenshots. H100i, presently only in a pull configuration. I even ran it without any case fans for a year. The plan was/is to replace it with Ryzen, when it dies, but it just doesn't seem to be capable of dying. Worth testing the 9590, for sure. Btw, I rock the Sabertooth FX 990 R2.0 board. edit: Presently running a 1050ti, as I lent my 7970 to a 9900K build that I did for a friend.

the 970 Aura doesnt "officially" support the FX 9590...but there is actually very little risk of blowing up that motherboard with this CPU. it works just fine, ive repaired a system locally in the past year that used these components and the customer had no idea what was wrong, feeling either the PSU or motherboard had fried because of the same thing. PSU was 80+ Gold 750w and worked fine in another system, so that wasnt the issue. turns out they had a stupid memory configuration and a busted 1060, NOT as a result of the CPU/mobo choice. replaced the sticks with matching XMP 1866mhz DDR3 and installed his new GTX 1060 6gb and the thing fired up just fine. stable as all hell and quite the gaming beast. least i'd do is replace the PSU with a quality one and either drop that 4.7ghz overclock to something like 4.3ghz or just replace that cooler and some Kryonaut thermal paste wouldnt hurt. as long as that CPU stays cool, youll be golden. dont sell it either...im sure itll beat your current personal rig, that thing is a monster.

Go for it. You'll be fine. :) I've been running the exact same CPU and motherboard combo (32GB RAM, Corsair 800w PSU, AMD RX580 GPU and an Antec 360mm AIO liquid cooler) for several years now. That little 120mm Cooler you've got in there won't keep up. I had the same and was overheating like crazy until I put the 360mm in. It (obviously) runs hot but has handled just about everything I've thrown at it, including VR. The only achilles heel I've found is CPU intensive video rendering for long periods. I've managed a maximum of about 90 minutes before the 9590 hit the magic 75c and powered down.

For sure, there are lots of motherboards that will have serious problems with the FX 9590. This isn't one of them. It's got a 7+1 phase VRM with a decent size heatsink. One thing to keep in mind with cheap PSU's is that, cheap PSU's can BARELY ever supply the advertised wattage across the entire unit, where real brands like corsair, can support the advertised wattage on a single rail. This means that while the PSU might say 800 watts, the 12v rail may only support 300-400 watts, which really makes the PSU no more valuable than a good 400 watt PSU.

I have my FX 8320E 4.5Ghz + Asus 970 Pro Gaming Aura. I can assure that board is very capable of a FX 9590, it have a 7+1 phase layout. My CPU is cooled by a Noctua NH-U14s. Testing the overclocking potential of my CPU, I saw it reaching 250W on Pryme95 and the VRM never had problems. In the end I configured for 4.5Ghz at 1.375V with Load Line Calibration at Extreme. Temperatures are very good. Is not the best CPU for today standarts, but is still capable of some good results on gaming, but for 60 fps of corse, I have a GTX 1060 6GB.

The 9590 is literally a higher clocked 8370 that consumes more power and produces more heat. If you OC a 8350/8370 to 4.7 it would perform identically. Since excessive use in a 970 board could easily kill the VRM, especially if over clocked you'd need a 990 board. Those still sell for well over $100 used, upwards of $150 on occasion. Just put an 8350 in there and OC it, will be identical performance to a 9590.

I recently bought a used FX-8370 to replace the Phenom II 1100T in my old rig. The seller offered a 9590, too. Point is: My rig has the priciest 990FX MoBo in it there was at the time, the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 (rev. 1.3). That is one of the few MoBo, you could pair with that 9590, If you wanted, because of the decent sized VRM array. Still: Even back then the stability was not a given, as I remember. You absolutely NEEDED a separate fan to blow on the VRM. For that reason, I think, Gigabyte did remove the official support ads of that processor at a later time. It still lists in the manual, though. But I know, that the "PC Games Hardware" magazine from Germany did run that config, saying that it is like living on the edge...more or less. But I didn't want to go under water for it, so I opted for the less powerful one. That processor is just one thing, as it was back then, too: Ridiculous. The reason I have that beefy board is, that it's predecessor was a 870 based one from AsRock (wich I still happen to have), that couldn't handle the 1100T - other than advertised. And I wanted a board that just works and I wouldn't have to care about the VRM. With that Gigabyte one I got what I wanted. Just need to repaste it to get it going, a new CMOS Battery is due for sure.

honestly, i think you're being too paranoid with a lot of this stuff. I do a lot of risky stuff with the spare computer components i work with, and using a high wattage CPU on a motherboard that isn't rated for it isn't that bad. The motherboard wattage ratings are mostly determined by the heatsinks on the motherboard power delivery cicructs being able to dissipate the heat. i've been able to push full 91w i7's on OEM dell motherboards that were rated for 51w i3's. keep a fan on the motherboard and throw in a 650w psu, and everything should be fine.

i know that Videos is 2 Month old now, but you can use that board and CPU combo no problem. The Board is rated for 125Watts because there werent higher usage CPUs at the release i think. TBH the VRMs are beefy enough with 8 big phases and cooling on it. If there is some air over them anything will be fine. The board is made for high OCs, so it can handle a Stock 9590 without problems.

Motherboard should be fine tbh. When you consider say a 8320 heavily overclocked is essentially the same thing. I really think you will be fine, not to mention regardless of any negative perception of the AM3+ cpu's are really well built. I don't you will kill it at all tbh. So yeah I suggest you keep that board as that board is actually a really well built board. I would wager it's better built then some of the older 990fx boards that had some issues. You really will be fine especially with claiming it up and proper airflow. It's been awhile but when I looked into it one of the reasons why some of the better 970 boards will not lost support for the 9590 was part of the marketing of the 990fx benefits. Of course older cheaper 970 boards are not advisable and are not as good as the 990fx older boards. This Asus as I said earlier is a higher end 970 board. Just my suggestion based on AM3+combinations I have done and some I still own. I'm sure you will find it performs really well all things considered, good luck.

The board would seem to be the least of your worries, maybe a bit of extra airflow for the VRMs might not hurt. Isn't anyone going to mention the daft cooling setup though? As it stands, the exhaust fan is sucking air through the radiator, probably this is the only way it fit easily and they didn't want to blow the hot air right back into the case for obvious reasons - however, Corsair recommended pushing air through the radiator, 'cause as you may know, axial fans totally _blow_ when it comes to sucking (they need an intake area as large and unobstructed as possible). Besides, the two fans on top are also blowing out while there is only one intake fan. So this is a negative pressure setup. Even more static pressure required from the radiator fan. Like I said, daft. At the very least, turn those two top fans around. If you can also swap the radiator and fan around, even better.

The AIO is installed upside down. This could potentially over time as liquid disappears from the unit, cause air bubbles to be pumped to the CPU and cause noise in the pump, damage it and provide less cooling for CPU. The lifespan of the AIO could in a worst case scenario be reduced to only a few months.
