I heard this song when I was 18. Sung by Bonnie Raitt. I've loved it ever since. it described how I felt about myself perfectly. It was gift during a time when I was in emotional pain. I used to think it was because it described me, but now I see that the gift is it's gentleness, a tenderness we all need when we're low. Thank you Randy Newman!

This is absolutely the saddest song ever written, and the saddest version ever recorded. Brilliant, simply brilliant. "It takes a whole lot of medicine for me to pretend that I'm somebody ese." Just... wow...

It is most certainly up there very near the top in the saddest song listings, and IS certainly tops in the open honesty, raw confessional song listings. But I still have to say that Steve Earle's "Goodbye" is THE numero uno saddest song ever penned, and quite 'confessional' as well. ;)

This is a simple, beautiful version with just Mr. Newman and his piano... the way it was written. In my mind, a near perfect song.

Those who have lived this way know he absolutely nailed those feelings. Fortunately, I broke out of the drugs and alcohol treadmill years ago.

He's been working (and getting very well-paid) in Disney composer hell for so long now that it's easy to forget what an unbelievably great songwriter he was and still is. There was such a purity to the work he was doing in 1970 and I wish he'd give us more of it.

Aus Joel Musictv - When my dad was 62, he told me he couldn’t stand to be alone because he didn’t like the company. I was shocked because though he didn’t drink and he didn’t abuse drugs, he sounded just like so many of my friends who were addicts or alcoholics. Randy Newman’s last verse in this song cuts to the heart of the dependency and esteem issues those folks experience. My dad was first generation survivor of alcoholism in his family and as a young man, he knew where the worm was in the bottom of that bottle. I just had no way of knowing how deeply that drug could affect the lives it touches, even decades later.

Wow what you written here my friend just cuts to the bone… “couldn’t stand to be alone because he didn’t like the company?… damn… he knew where that worm was in the bottom of that bottle…. Then even decades later…. Brudda that is heavy. I’m sorry you had to go through the hardships. But this is written so well….. be well my friend

Randy sure can put emotions into words. I can just feel the supressed pain of someone wanting to be in the comfort of an ex love, whom probably got sick and tired and threw out. I easpecially like the last lines of this great song... "You know how it is with me baby . Ya know, I just can't stand myself. It takes a whole lot of medicine , for me to pretend that I'm somebody else" [past story of my life]

Yeah baby, I've been drinking, and I shouldn't come by I know But I found myself in trouble, and I had nowhere else to go Got some whiskey from a bar man, got some cocaine from a friend I just had to keep on moving, till I was back in your arms again Well I'm guilty, yeah I'm guilty, I'll be guilty for the rest of my life How come I never do, what I'm supposed to do How come nothing that I try to do ever turns out right Well you know how it is with me baby, you know I just can't stand myself It takes a whole lot of medicine, for me to pretend to be somebody else

Randy Newman is a very prolific song writer. Many of his songs made it into the mainstream by other artists. This particular song was a big hit by Bonnie Raitt. I LOVE both Randy's and Bonnie's versions. A piece of his tune, "Dixie Flyer", was used on the long-lived NPR series "Click and Clack". That is another great tune!

I love Bonnie raitt's version bringing in half of little feat Lowell George Billy Payne and more back about 1973 I think she did this on about her second or third album

Even though Randy's original is much more 'raw' and bare (and maybe 'authentic' because of that, although I don't think that he ever had to battle addition like Bonnie DID??), I do really love Bonnie's deeply soulful version, right from that first listen way back in '73 (BEFORE Randy even put this, his own song, on an album). (And yeah, her accompaniment on that version is GREAT, especially the piano and sax!) In any case, it is THE ultimate song of dependency/addiction resignation, so YES, THANK YOU Randy for writing this!
