How to make a Leadscrew for a Clausing 5900 series lathe. This project was for a viewer, his was in very rough shape. This leadscrew is for the cross slide. The nut was purchased on ebay.
The material I used for this leadscrew is Pre-Hard 4130, 3/4" diameter.

Great video Sir. I cut some ACME threads a couple of days ago but did not set the compound to 14.5* and went straight in with the Cross Feed. Found out it works either way using the Compound or the Cross Feed. I learned a lot from watching your video. Thanks.

I remembered the previous one. Great work, as usual. My Taiwanese ENCO lathe has some screw holes that were obviously hand drilled, and are a good 10 degrees off. LOL Was going to cut my own new lead screw and nut, but my lathe had way too much backlash for any accuracy, so I bought a paired set.

Excellent work sir. A side note: could you leave the collar if the gear longer and set the shoulder of the shaft back to coincide with the collar? Reason: I think leaving the collar longer and shaft set back would allow a much thicker web for the new taper pin area. More collar would be less chance for the pin to wallow out at a later time,like the old gear and shaft arrangement? I saw that,thought I would ask. Not a criticism,merely an observation and thought. Chuck.

Great video sir. Nice work on that tapered pin. I scrolled down through the comments and didn't see where one person noticed that you were turning that hand reamer backwards! I do believe this is a left handed spiral flute reamer. Just for shits and giggles sir no disrespect intended. Keep up the great work Randy! I really enjoy your channel and have purchased your T-shirts.
@RRINTHESHOP
@RRINTHESHOP 3 жыл бұрын
Joe. No disrespect taken. I was not turning it backwards. Taper pin spiral flute reamers are fluted this way with the cutting edge so that RH rotation is cutting.

Does each tpi have to have a specific insert? Or can some do multiple threads? Do you use a positive rake insert with that 4130 and less tool pressure to cut a uniform depth? Acme seems a subject that many give an overview but almost no in depth information. Thanks for the video.

Yes the inserts are specific to the pitch. they are neutral rake inserts and holders. Using a follow rest is very helpful.
