Thanks Randy....I especially enjoyed the heat treating portion. I wondered about the quenching process; first time I've seen that and wasn't sure how that sealed-in-SS foil method worked. I had heard about that from Stan but I can't recall ever actually seeing the quenching. Wasn't sure if you pierced the foil or not, but I guess it cools either way. Thanks for the insight and the cool projects we get to see.

If you take the anvil out of the foil before quenching it will end up harder and more consistent

Nice bench anvil plate Randy. I have found that some hardend steels do not fully re-harden the second time around...don't ask me why, metalurgists know but will kill us if they tell us lol!

Always good to see something useful arise our of something that was spent scrap. Great bench block Randy. It should come in very handy and loved to see the crap catching grove at the bottom of the V-grove, great finishing touch, very Professional looking block the only thing lacking to my 82 year old eyes are those old time Case Harding colors from those lovely vintage tools that always look so cool but it is a working bench block not a Picasso, it will do just fine as is. Great job Randy, love it.

I was guessing that they originally case-hardened the cutter blades. The fact that you have harder areas where the carbon from the paper soaked in tells me that I may be right about that.

Not so much the carbon content It is High in Manganese. You can tell when you cut it with a torch lots of smoke and fine sparks.
