Ultimate Sewing Machine to buy. Best ever made, in my opinion. If I had a choice of one machine only to take with me in a bug out scenario, this is it.
If Lexus was in the sewing machine business, I imagine their machines would be like this.
Top quality engineering and precision manufacturing.
Find one. Buy it. Thank me.

It has a built in thread cutter. There is a tiny blade attached to the presser foot lock lever. And OMG I love my machine! It was a Christmas gift from my husband in 1976 so I could make curtains for our new house. I have used that machine thousands of times and still using it…I don’t have that husband anymore…but I still have that machine!

You're so right. This has always been my favorite machine. The stretch stitch one is the same thing except it doesn't have those few extra stitch settings. Can't live without them. I have a few of them because I do a lot of sewing and it's quicker to have the thread colors set up and ready to go. Also when one is out for service I have backup and don't have to worry about what stitch setting I'm going to use.

I first bought myself in December a 1251 (think 1941 without the frills). It's a basic ten stitch machine, like the 1941, but it's a low shank model. Still has the extra high presser foot clearance, still has the one amp motor and double pulley system, but is incapable of running any of the accessories Randy's machine can run. I'll tell you something about some "repair" techs. The ones that own stores that sell machines, in particular. Randy, BTW, is not among this breed. That I'm certain of. A lot of store owners that fix machines make money from selling machines. They rely on people's ignorance to do so in some cases. We have such a clown where I live. Everyone that brings a machine in to be repaired is subjected to exactly the same speech you got. I'm not sure of where your model was built, or when, but the Ultra Stitch series are reputed to have a bit of plastic inside of them. Not a lot, but some. My 1251 has a plastic cam stack in it. Reason I bought the 1940. In saying that, even with the plastic both machines likely possess, it's still a much better built machine than anything you can buy on new. I was rooked into thinking my Janome HD3000 was made with mostly metal parts, like the hybrid Kenmore/Janome machines from the mid eighties. Well, I tore into that machine when I realized it only had a .5 amp motor on it. That machine...it's almost all plastic now. The motor, a wafer thin flywheel, and it's powered with almost every single bit of electricity because they installed an LED Christmas light where once a halogen light lived. So I bought myself what some engineers call "A Heater". Meaning, the motor spins far past it's design limits, emulating the performance of a much stronger motor. The machine, every last part made of nylon that they could get away with, cleverly disguised with older looking parts (think hubcaps covering junk wheels). The only part that is still all metal (well, mostly metal) is the machine's head and race. The rest, from the upper worm gear to the camstacks, the handwheel, commuter elbow, lower gears, even the feed dog pins that raise and lower the dogs, all of it made with nylon or that type of plastic that becomes brittle and disintegrates when exposed to heat of UV rays. My point...I'm unloading this, and two other machines that are new and full of features. Why? Because I don't want to be sewing with a paper tiger. Your Kenmore will live long past these designed to fail machines made of nylon so soft and so thin you can literally bend the part between your fingers, and see actual light through the part. Janome took a page out of Samsung's book and made planned obsolescence part of their entire product line. And this is a machine that costs three times more than a singer or brother of comparable features. Heavy Duty? I don't think so. So you were super wise keeping that machine. Even with plastic in them (again, I cannot be sure yours does, but in a Kenmore group I belong to, I was told they have the same camstack plastics mine does,). Even with that, your plastic is a lot stronger than anything you can buy on the market, it has a better motor, the dual pulley system (which makes good needle penetration), super high presser foot capability, and if you've a High Shank model, it can easily be converted to low shank. My 1940 was dropped on its back in transit from Texas. The case it came with was smashed. The machine was not protected at all, and suffered some serious damage to the paint, and the rear panel had a break on top (no big deal, I fixed it). The machine, one that clearly dropped from the top of a table or truck bed, works like a top. A testament to just how well built and engineered these baby's are. And they're super simple to maintain on your own, so you won't need to worry about some shyster trying to con you into buying a plastic pile of garbage because your machine is a "bad sew". High five for not being as dumb as I was.

Back in the late 1990s I purchased my first sewing machine, a so-called "jeans machine" which was advertised as a product over-run for high school home-ec classes. Long story short, it was a POS and I took it to a private individual who fixes sewing machines out of his garage. He told me why it's a POS (plastic parts where metal should be used) and offered to sell me a used, reconditioned Kenmore 158. I did and it's been a trooper all these years....

Jeans Machine. White of Elna? I know one of these companies made this model. By the time the 1990's came about, all machines were hybrids. Most had the odd plastic part (Kenmore machines, made by Janome had nylon gears, and a few plastic components, but the plastics were durable enough, and generally only failed if the machine was neglected, abused, or made to sew loads too heavy for their infrastructure). I only know this because I've torn down and rebuilt many of them from that era. As they got further up the 1990's, more and more plastic crept into their mechanicals, and machines slowly but surely started a long, ugly slide into a nylon-riddled world of planned obsolescence. One thing plastic does not do is age well when in a stressed, heated environment. Nylon, when put under load, sooner or later will crack as well. So imagine my surprise when I opened up my very expensive Janome and found nothing BUT nylon and made to turn brittle within ten years plastics. A machine that cost three times the price of their competitors. Singer, as bad as their so-called "Heavy Duty" machines are, actually have less plastic inside them than this Janome HD machine. l knew the infrastructure of the previous generation of the HD series, and it was built very much like a Kenmore hybrid from the late 80's. So I thought I was buying a decent general purpose machine (there was no way I would sew leather or pop cans on it like they do on the Shopping Networks). Finding out the stronger motor was bait and switched, learning I paid premium money for substandard junk...t'was a very hard pill to swallow. So, I know how you must have felt finding out your machine was garbage. Glad you got someone that showed you what's what, and put the right tool into your creative hands.

@@shopwornbear1171 It's too bad they can't build moving parts out of polymer, the same stuff that most handguns are made of today but we all know the reason; plastic dries, cracks and breaks under stress. Been using my Kenmore a lot lately and loving it!

I've had mine since about 1976. I was thinking it was my first machine, but actually it was the second. My twins were in elementary school and my youngest was a toddler when I got it. The twins are now 55 years old and grandparents themselves, and the youngest is 51. When they were young I made everything we wore except my husband's jeans. The Kenmore is now the senior member of my sewing shop, still working well. The only thing I like better about the newer machines is that you can use different threads on top and bottom. The Kenmore has a preference for similar threads. I really appreciate that it is all metal and sturdy. I can oil it myself. I like the top pressure button for different fabrics. I was glad to see this video and hear my old favorite get such praise.

That’s an awesome story and one that resonates with me. So many folks think that a newer machine just has to be better, right. Unfortunately no. The machine that you bought in 1974 was a specimen of perfection in sewing machines. Now, any machine you buy today, is worse than the one that was purchased last year. The one that will be on the shelves next year, will be markedly worse than the one purchased today. The decline is consistent and continuing. Go out and find one like your old one while there are still some out there roaming the countryside. Oil it and clean it, and it will still be better than anything you’ll buy new today. Just my humble opinion. (Based on 51 years of experience and observations) Kudos to you for your kindness in gifting an awesome machine to a person with the obvious need for it. Now, be kind to yourself and get one just like it for YOU! 😎👍🏼

I sewed so much on it! I remember I sewed a Vogue pattern swimsuit in the late 1970’s when Lycra first came out with shirring that was spectacular! I naively sewed it up, followed the pattern directions and it was perfect! I look back and wonder about that, the pattern was way over my newby sewist head at the time! Lol. I have the 1931, which is very similar but takes cams. Love it! The lady who sold it to me said her mother got a fancy new sewing machine, but still preferred this one. Not sure why she sold it. (I'm thrilled to have it, though!)

Congrats on the 1931. It’s as solid as a tank. Why she sold it is curious, but sometimes it’s about having enough space, sometimes it’s converting unused items into cash. Most of my customers who are looking for a “good old Kenmore”, are trying to find the one they mistakenly sold or gave away after purchasing their new one. It seems like all our new fancy electronic and plastic machines are having a short performance life. I encourage people to hang on to their old machines in order to have a “back up plan” when the new one fails. And…. It is going to fail. Thanks for your comments.

I recently bought an Ultra Stitch 12 (158.15612) from a thrift store, very cheap. I bought it with the intention to give to my daughter.(then found out she has 2-3) It was in the original (beat up)box, with the manual, and original receipt. The thrift store told me it was from a lady who was a seamstress. It works great. I decided to keep it, and try a few projects of my own. I have repaired many stuffed animals for grandkids, over the years.(among other things) Yes, they bring them to me instead of their mothers. I am a 65 yr-old male just learning this stuff. Thanks for sharing Randy. I've been using a Singer 338 my Dad bought my Mom new. Keeping my eye out for another machine. Someone was giving away a 158.19400. This is My first Kenmore. My wife has a Brothers with all the electronics. I don't like using it, I'm afraid I'd break it or something. I don't want to be the last one that used it if something goes wrong with it 🤓. I have not sewn with the Kenmore yet. Looks like they took real good care of it, other that it has been sitting a long time. Everything moves freely, I think I only need to brush out dust and oil it. I've been searching videos on it first to see what all to check before oil and running it. I'm impressed with this machine so far. It does not look like this S/N made your list, so now I'm real curious on how much better one could be.

I agree with you that the 158 series machines were built by Maruzen/Jaguar. And I believe the 148 series were built by Soryu. I know that some of the very early Kenmores were built by the White company and least one Kenmore was German-made but I don't remember the model. Just a little history on these if you don't know: from around the mid-60's and beyond, many (if not all) of these machines were designed by Charles Harrison, who became the first black executive at Sears. He was a brilliant engineer although dislexic, and he wanted his machines to be easy to use, even without a manual. The iconic 158.10x0 series, in particular the marvelous 158.1040 was his design - simple, easy to use and very functional. Plus it could do anything a full-size machine could! And sewing machines weren't his only designs. He lead the team that updated the old Viewmaster (if you're old enough to remember it😄!) and he designed hair dryers, blenders, lawn mowers, stoves, fondue pots, Craftsman tools, the first plastic nesting garbage can and much more. He's no longer with us, but his legacy lives on in these wonderful vintage Kenmore sewing machines. I'm a collector and have a bunch of them, including a158.19412 - a superb machine!

Well I took your advice. I came across a 158.17600 and no question. It's an extraordinarily good machine. Mine looks like it pretty much was never used. The only thing wrong with it are two very tiny dings on the paint. It was partly frozen with old oil, but otherwise, in like new condition. No question you've nailed it. Top quality engineering. Top quality components Precision made. All the built in stitches that one could need for any sewing project, capacity for all sorts of great embroidery cams. I find it hard to figure out what more anyone could want in a sewing machine. This is the machine that Singer wished it could make in the 1970's.

At my Singer store in the Six Flags Mall in Arlington,Texas, (in the mid-seventies)we had machines that were not so good. Five stores in the mall sold sewing machines: J.C.Penney,Montgomery Ward,Sanger Harris,Sears, and Singer. Every other store’s machines were better than ours at Singer (in my opinion) because unlike ours, theirs were Japanese with precision parts and incredible workmanship. We sold a lot of machines based on Singers prior reputation and strong brand name. The Sears Kenmore was the best of the lot. When a shopper said they were headed to Sears to see their selection before they made up their mind to buy, I knew I was sunk. The Kenmore of that era was so superior to the Singer machines that it was a classic no brainer. After servicing those same machines for 50 years and noticing that all these years later they’re still the best you can find, I buy and sell them, as well as recommend them.

Really enjoyed your video! I have a 158.19411 and 12. In my notes on my 41 I had written that it was made in Japan by Maruzen. Back in the 70s, my mom had a 18030, 31 or 32. One thing you didn't mention (and I might be crazy for saying this), is these machines have a very distinct smell. When I use either of my Kenmores, the smell takes me right back to sewing at the dining room table in my childhood home. Nice mention of Lexus - I am in my second one. Thanks for caring about and loving these Grande Dames! P.S. Not sure, but I think "newer" Kenmore machines were made by Janome.

You are correct on your manufacturing origins. The smell you reference is most likely the sparking of the motor armature and the subsequent reaction to the surrounding atmosphere. It’s almost like the ozone smell outdoors after an electrical storm. Sometimes it’s reminiscent of my old Lionel train set on Christmas morning in the 1950’s. It’s amazing how our brain can conjure up memories when triggered by a fragrance. Thanks for watching and providing your valuable comments. 😎

It’s not IF it will stop working, but when. The price is the determining factor of the time of expiration. Pay a little, dispose it right away. Pay a lot, sew a little longer, But not much. There was a golden era of vintage machines that personified the excellence of craftsmanship and manufacturing precision. I guess we are blessed to have access to all those magnificent specimens of skill and accomplishment. It’s a stark comparison to the flimsy contraptions that are being foisted upon the sewing public these days. I tell everyone to grab a vintage Kenmore and sew forever without a care as to whether it will fail and disappoint you. Have fun with yours and thanks for commenting.

I don't have this exact machine, but mine is very close. I will never, ever, ever get rid of it! (By the looks of it, probably an iteration or two earlier - I'm not home, so I can't check the model.) It belonged to a family friend, and I my mom bought it from her to give to me in the early 90s. I've tried other, newer machines - none compare.

Thanks so much for this video. I bought one new in the 70s and used it for 40 years. My Mother got same one at same time. I made so many clothes that I wore out the buttonhole template, but luckily mom didn't use her template as much so she gave it to me. She recently passed and now I have her machine, in like new condition which I will continue to take care of and use. It really is the best workhorse. Model 158.17600 serial# 0053167 are you familiar with this one. It has the cam dept on top. I'm looking for cams. I've Never used cam sewing. I don't even know what they're for. Yet, I'm about to look it up and purchase some. I got this beauty at a thrift store for $19.99 case dirty & yellowed. When I took the top cover off this Kenmore looked brand new. It sews like a dream. I usually use a baby lock brother Serger or a Brother machine. If I could send a pic I would do so. I'm very excited to learn and stitch using cams to see what's up with that process. I have done trial stitching & came to your site to learn the function of stitch dials and settings on this awesome machine. 😊😊 Thank you so much! I'm a happy owner of what I feel is a machine of a lifetime no doubt . If you have any suggestions on the cams please let me know. Again, Sincere Thanks!

I picked up two of these old Kenmore machines from the local community store, one Model C877.69 for $10 (Cant find any information online about it, but I think it's from the 60's, the lady who owned it kept a service record back to 1968) and a Model 158.13470 from about 1970/1972 for $5 (They thought it was broken so offered it to me for free, I gave them $5 and when I got it home it worked fine). I got them a few months apart, but they both look like the Rolls Royce of sewing machines from their time. They are in beautiful condition, solid metal cast body, no plastic anywhere, no plastic cogs like my singer from the same period, and they run almost completely silently. I gave them a clean and some oil, and they look and run like they should be in a museum. I'm pretty sure you would have to pay over $1500 if you wanted a similar quality machine new these days. You should definitely add these two models to your list.

I made a video regarding the 385 and it’s propensity to not reverse after sitting idle for a while. That’s about the only malfunction that the 385 is famous for. Otherwise, put a drop of oil wherever you see parts rotating, pivoting, or sliding. Don’t over oil it and don’t oil the motor unless you hear the bearings squealing. I’m not the biggest fan of the 385, although it’s better than most machines you’ll buy new these days. It doesn’t have metal drive gears. They’re nylon and don’t break often. Thanks for watching.

I just bought myself a 158.1940. Very few differences between these models, except the 1941 has that wonderful shiny handwheel, while mine has to suffer with the ugly hard plastic one. :-( . I went and bought a bobbin hook from a parted out 1774 so that I could use the chainstitch accessory in the race. Since getting a center needle plate for chainstitching is now literally impossible, I'm taking a page out of a James Rogers video (smart guy, but that voice...nails on a blackboard) and modifying a straight stitch plate to do a chainstitch. By the time I'm finished (this is a low shank machine), it'll do all the good stuff the 1941 does. I just wish I could change out that ugly handwheel, but I am not sure what sort of bobbin winder arrangement is going on with the 1941 (good luck buying one here, they never stick around longer than an hour). If I at least understood how the 1941's handwheel worked in tandem with that bobbin winder (not sure if it's different, etc) vs the twist knob version on my machine, I would buy one and swap it out with this one. The machine came to me in very good condition, EXCEPT that handwheel. It's literally turned green with age. Underneath, it is the same colour as the machine. I've ordered a used one from an Ebay part out that at least is the same colour as the machine . As Red Green always says: ""If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Жыл бұрын
The foot control gets hot when you sew slowly because that’s exactly what it’s designed to do. It is a “heat sink”, which means that it collects the heat so it doesn’t damage your motor. Most people discover the heat in their foot control if they sew without shoes. And yes, the resistance lessens when you sew faster. Resistance = heat. The new electronic foot controls will just fail instead of dissipate the heat. They’re like light bulbs. Once they’re done, you throw them away and get another one. The old school ones are better, but they’re heavier and more costly to ship. They’re also more susceptible to damage if banged around, because they’re ceramic in the middle. In other words, older is better, but you can’t treat the old ones like ping pong balls. You treat them like Faberge eggs. 😎
