Every morning in Maarghazhi, our local Easwaran Kovil Gufukkall will broadcast thru the mike set early in the dawn. There were no other way than to own a Gramophone than to listen to this soul melting rendition by MSma. It woke us up for studying in the "Bhramma Muhoorththam" of each day in Maargazhi and we grew up with that. And it became a life long habit to wake up around Four AM even without an alarm clock!! After we learnt the meaning and the lyrics thru the Gurukkall, we were lured even more into this. Even since that, I listen to this at least once in a day and invigorate myself for the day. Now, our Sangheedha Dhevadhai Soorya Ghaayathri is doing the same with her "Swarga Saareeram!" I am all for Carnatic songs and I worship the singer's too. But what we have in this video is not a live rendition of a religious song. The girl in this video is just moving her lips as if she is singing. But, this is just a staged video . There is no microphone on her and the accompanying instruments can be seen nowhere. Maybe she did give her voice during the audio recording too. But, what is the need to have the song recorded separately and the video shot separately? The composer Dikshitar (1775 -1835) was aware of several North Indian ragas, as well as Western tunes. He composed this in the North Indian raga "Brindavan Sarang" and decided to embed the name of the raga in the lyrics, so it is always sung in that scale. You can hear the name of the raga mentioned at 2:46 in the piece. His compositions are beautifully and intricately crafted, and this is a well known example.

Whenever I hear to this song, I imagine like walking in a corner of Mahavishnu Temple of Hoysala architecture type ,inside an ancient city at morning Sunrise time around 5-6 AM ,after heavy rain at night, floor of the temple is wet and also fogg is filled inside that temple with the smell of sandal paste and incense sticks it feels like being in Vaikuntha.... imagining this little girl singing this song in a matapa near a kalyani.... this experience is soothing..... all my stress and disappointments will be forgotten for a while

I also feel as an older person, that this genetis preseing the classics in a more fresh, contemporary style and reaching out to a larger audience. Classics always had a niche dedicated audience. Either its a family tradition or you discover it and dedicate yourself. It can not be spoonfed. Govt. channels actually did more to showcase traditional arts 25 years ago, than today. No matter what propaganda tells you.
