I purchased my 2011 4.4 five months ago. It cost me 10 k for a fine example. Even so I put 5 k aside for maintenance . So far complete set of brake pipes. Complete fluid change all round. plus filters. plus some sundry pipes and pulleys plus , wait for it! Secondary turbo went and I had to replace. The rest of the car is fab! I love it! My 5k has gone but the I expected this on an older car. The key point is: You cant run this car on a shoe string, period! Don't buy it if you are not prepared to properly maintain. These cars are sublime. Oh, and its quick and must be driven on a good run and as you say here, weekly kick down to 3k on the revs to give the turbo a clear out. I never get sick of 1500rpm at 70 plus miles per hour in a chair thats more comfortable than any in your house. :)

Well said, this counts for any classic luxury car. I drive a BMW E39 530d in ultimate condition. Spend at least 2k every year in maintenance and service. The result is a silky smooth running classic BMW 3.0 which beats any modern BMW by far on any level for all times! A L322 TDV8 is on my next shopping list too! Not sure if it will be the 3.6 or the 4.4. Currently I fancy more for the 3.6 for several reasons 😊

With reference to your oil build up and smoke issue.. I’ve had my 2011 4.4 for 12 years love it fantastic vehicle. I noticed this very early in my ownership. Took the vehicle back under warranty and the issue is actually the scavenge pipe which takes the oil away from the turbo is of two small a diameter so the oil gets past the seals and into the turbo then engine and burns off.. the fix is to drill and thread a larger diameter in the engine block and get a larger pipe to the turbo.. I had it done under warranty and apparently it’s a long job as the subframe etc needs to come out.. never had a problem since.. I remember ranting at the main dealer that if I’d of wanted a car that smoked that much I’d of payed a visit to a local car auction on a Wednesday evening with £200 quid in my pocket and no doubt got fixed up 😊

Thank you. I've been longing for an L322 for quite a while and kept hearing different things about the 2 V8 diesel options, but this run-through has made my mind up. After everything you said, I'm actually going to listen to my wife instead and not buy one at all. Apart from minor stuff I can't do the mechanical work, so it would end up costing a small fortune whichever way I went. If I need something to tow my camper I'll just get something boring that won't give me nasty surprises. Sad, isn't it? Sometimes the head has to win over the heart. For the heart, my motorbike will have to do...

I've owned my 2004 TD6 Vogue for 18 years. In that time I've encountered and had fixed just about every common fault these amazing machines present. She's been completely re sprayed in increments over the years. All the usual rust areas (rear wheel arches, upper tail gate) have been dealt with. Chassis welding completed and under side wax oiled every 2 years. The vehicle is absolutely mint inside and out and completely original - no silly facelift front bumper / head light nonsense. I'm fortunate that my local specialist is also a Land Rover breaker, so they always have cheap second hand parts on the shelf. For example, last week the rear prop shaft was replaced. Part new from LR was over £900. The indy supplied it for £150 and charged an hours labour to fit. The point being that running these vehicles does not necessarily mean spending crazy amounts of cash. Regardless of the L322 spec or year, anybody who buys one of these machines for essentially beer money, with maybe 5 or so previous keepers and a sketchy history is opening themselves up to a whole new world of car pain. Just leave your wallet open on the passenger seat!

Great video - thanks. Got a 2007 3.6 with 101k miles. Just cost me a small fortune for 1 new and 1 repaired turbo + a load of welding and full over everything service, but it's now a well sorted beast and I love it. Do what you can yourself and find a friendly indy garage and you won't go far wrong. Never thought it would be cheap motoring but I've essentially got a car with up to date service history which is far more important to me as I know what has been done and how. Keep it up and good luck with the 4.4

Jumped into a 2012 4.4 3 and a bit years ago with 107k now on 124k, lots of maintenance to keep it in good order. no regrets, never let me down. Use it on european and uk road trips, no better place to sit. Always exercise 2nd turbo when warmed up! 😊 If buying just have a savings pot to sort it, as it will need it from time to time. i use a specialist for the difficult work, otherwise routine maintenance and even air suspension is simple enough to work on. Great comparison! I think I’ll stick with my trusty(?) 3.0 L TD6 with 222k on the clock that I’ve had for 7 years and have spent a kings ransom on it! I know all it’s quirks and annoying habits, maintenance is simple in comparison and the tax is very low, again in comparison. If I want revs I just stick it in sport mode. It is regularly serviced, gearbox annually and other oils eg diff etc bi-annual. Have fun!

I'd had that engine in a couple of E39 5 Series BMWs and it was brilliant but in the RR it has to work hard and I wasn't prepared for that at all. It's a shame really, I'd like to get back in one to see how it is now I've had a couple of them, I think I'd enjoy it far more.

Good video, one difference you didn't mention is the 3.6 doesn't have a DPF, and the 4.4 does. Having had previous issues with "DPF full" warnings due to short journey city driving, and having to go for a blast on the motorway to clear it. I chose to buy a 3.6 for that reason. So if you are like me and do lots of short journeys it might be a consideration. They are both great cars though and I probably could be tempted one day with a late model low mileage 4.4. to replace my facelift 3.6 which I have had for over 7 years now and still love to bits. Good look with the channel.

Great video, with a sensible comparison, but I'm going to stick with my 2003 NA BMW V8 4.4 powered L322, for many reasons. I do all my own maintenance and have full diagnostics, so looking after it is easier. Diesel is increasing in price, along with related road tax, and is heading towards being outlawed, possibly before petrol. I run on LPG (mostly) so my per mile cost is about the same as a 3.6 diesel. Ive already owned it for 4 years without any major problems and have completed long EU tours with 5 people and all luggage. Finally, I have a complete spare car, so parts don't really present a challenge. I drove a 4.4 tdi and loved it but I'll keep my petrol.

Thank you sir. Apprehension is the correct emotion; anyone that goes into these thinking it will be fine is in for a shock! That said, taking a realistic approach would serve you well. The L322 is a complex machine and the parts are NOT cheap but there is a good choice of aftermarket parts these days which may not be as good as OEM but they do make it more affordable. The biggest problem I've found is that people tend to ignore the issues because even if it's a relatively simple part failure, access is awkward so labour charges are high when it comes to repairs Set yourself a budget for the car and put a couple of grand aside for preventative (and of course inevitable) maintenance. Buy the one with the best history and service record you can find. Alternatively, buy something really cheap with a known issue, repair it and enjoy it. If you do buy one, come back and let us know how you got on.

I have 2011 4.4 tdv8 - use it mainly on motorways and country roads but not experienced the smoke issue - it does get a bit of ‘exercise’ when the roads allow, I run it on premium diesel as I believe it helps with the DPF issues. Just added a L405 4.4 to the ‘fleet’ - I also have an old P38 4.0 V8 petrol, in need of some tlc now, but owned that for 20 years, engine sounds lovely! Best cars in the world I believe, each generation is slightly better, but any are great cars - Just ensure as others have said to have £5k set aside for unexpected repairs and carry out the regular maintenance…

Only real consideration is extra space, but IF I do decide to sell "Duke" and get a 322, now it will almost certainly be a 3,6 as late as I can affortd. He's figures for the 3.6 are not right... They don't use much more fuel at all and easily do 40 British mpg .. 45 isn't out of the question. Re mapped the 3.6 has the same power specs and it's also 100 kilos lighter than the 4.4 not that you need any more power than a stock 3.6, I think the 8 speed would be nice but remember it is only an overdrive gear (400rpm less on freeway) and one extra that splits ratios between what would be the normal 6 gears ... Add the extra 100 kilos of weight your not really going to be saving fuel because of it

I have the 8 speed ZF in my XF, from a stationary it takes 2nd gear by default. If you go into the settings and allow the flappy paddles in normal drive, flick the paddle and slow to a stop, it will downshift when needed but will not go into 1st and will pull away in 2nd. Is the RR the same? This could be why when you lift off the brake it doesn't take off. Excellent video, btw.
@FatNFurious
@FatNFurious 3 ай бұрын
Thank you. I don’t think this does start in 2nd, I’ve had a couple of Mercedes that do that like your XF but I wonder if the L322 is too heavy for that to be realistic. The f you count the changes it always seems to start in 1st too. It would be cool if I could configure the dash with GapIID to show the gear (just as a point of interest) but I can’t find an option to do that. I expect the reason it doesn’t take off so hard is to reduce drag on the box and aid economy etc. probably just advancement in torque converter technology. It does still move well just not as urgently as the ZF6. I’m happy with it now I’m used to it. I’d like to try an XF some time, it would be great to see what these engines can do in a lighter form, plus they look cool.

@FatNFurious
@FatNFurious 3 ай бұрын
Thank you. The turbos are pain to replace on these and while it will be easier on the 3.6 than the 4.4 it's essentially still the same layout. The key differences are that the 4.4 has two different sized turbos with the primary (smaller) one having an electronic actuator that's prone to failure (ask me how I know!) but it is fairly simple to replace actually. The secondary larger turn sort of freewheels at lower RPM and vents back through the secondary air box hence the need for two separate air boxes as you can't stop it spinning of course. Turbo hoses on the top of the 3.6 fail but aren't expensive from LR so I'd definitely do those and you can also blank and code out the EGRs on the 3.6 (not than anybody would dream of doing that on a road car) but you can't on the 4.4. Keep the P38 though. I've always had a soft spot for those but never owned one, I think they have such great look and they're a really good size too. May have to try one at some point.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply, much appreciated. Great video. I have just gone from a 3.0l sdv6 sport to a 4.4l tdv8 and love it. Unfortunately my sport swiveled its crankshaft bearings so its now spares or repairs if anyone wants it. About reverse in the 4.4, I have found the same. I had to reverse park up a hill last night and I had to give it the beans to move. I was considering putting it into low range to see if that made it easier. I do have a question. Obviously I have the LCD screen, I am trying to find a way I can have it in KPH when I take it abroad. I asked the question on a forum and they said to change my trip to KPH, which does then show the trip mileages in K, but the little digital speedo or the main Speedo is still in MPH. I cant see anything to do it and the handbook is pretty useless. I have subscribed and look forward to going through your videos and watching any new ones. Keep up the good work.

@FatNFurious Ай бұрын
Do you have the digital speedo in MPH there all the time? If you do, somebody has changed the coding on the instrument cluster. The coding option should be set by default to something along the lines of "As per Trip Computer" so if you set to KM, KM/H, L/100km then it will put the little digital display in the speedo and it will disappear when you go back to Miles, MPH, MPG. If yours looks like this one in my car where the MPH display is there all the time then I suspect that someone has hard set the display to MPH and it won't change which is extremely unhelpful I did this for you to see the process but as I say, mine has the MPH display coded to be there all the time. kzbin.infozsRKOmiFKOg Don't forget to use the "Tourist Lights" function when you're abroad too, there are some small levers on the side of the headlight projectors to remove the kick up of the beam from the left so that you don't blind oncoming traffic or need to stick those awful things over the lenses.

@FatNFurious
@FatNFurious Ай бұрын
@@i.p.g8428 Thank you. Quite honestly, I wouldn’t let the mileage worry me too much at this point in the car’s age. If you bought one with 50k it may well be original but parts will be perished etc. A high miler now is likely to have had a lot of maintenance to get it to cover that distance. If it’s a one owner car with good provenance then buy it based on its condition. If you know it and the owner that’s even better. It’s all going to come down to price really isn’t it? If it’s cheap enough and you have a pot of pennies to invest in keeping it on the road, I’d say go for it. Whatever you buy you’ll need to invest in I expect and it could make for a good story. Not knowing your circumstances, I’d warn that if it’s cheap due to its mileage and that is how it’s ended up in your price bracket, you’d be better off walking away. These things need a healthy “rainy day fund” and if you don’t have that, you’ll likely end up regretting your purchase. Wait, save a bit more money and then buy one. I’m sure that one of the main reasons these cars get such a bad reputation is because they fall to an “affordable” price point without people realising that although the car was only a couple of grand, they’ll still need to buy parts or manage complexity for an £80k car! Cars get cheaper with age but parts and labour generally don’t.

As you said luxury cars equal luxury manteinance no matter the age of the car (maybe with the exception of the few parts shared with more modest models). In my particular case I have made my mind that I'd like to own a Range Rover (especially after a recent trip to the Cotswolds). Although I like the looks of the newer versions I won't be going for one of those because I find the sweetspot for my needs/desire in older models. I have been reading and watching videos about what to buy and I have narrowed it to an L322, a Range Rover Sport L302 or even a Discovery5, any of them preferrably with the most reliable diesel engine. I own several cars at the moment (two daily drivers and three "classic" cars, one of them I'm finishing restoring at the moment) and the fact is that I do not even need or use a car on a daily basis (I live in a medium sized city with all the services in hand and I do not have to commute for work nor use the car as part of my job). My inital idea is to get rid of my oldest daily (high milleage kind of "beater" with very little value other than the service I get from it) and get the Range Rover for esporadic use on weekends, so I won't be putting many miles in it. I tend to keep my cars for years and if I like them I won't consider selling them unless I really need to. At this point I have been searching the classifieds and among the cars I've seen worth to check, there is this high milleage one. I do not know the owner nor the car and I haven't contacted him yet to ask for further information, but considering the car looks right on the pictures, it's a one owner car with that high mileage advertised as a perfectly running car (I assume that with the original engine as it doesn't say otherwise), it makes me think it must have been mantained, otherwise it would be visibly falling to pieces. The price is lower than the average but not ridiculously cheap. I am not based in UK and the prices for these cars in southern europe are not even near from those of UK, nor the quantity or quality of cars on sale is the same, so I was debating if 270.000 miles were too much to bother checking the car and if I should pass and go for the alternatives (cars around 120.000 miles mostly with several owners already and lost service history). I have also seen a couple of "mint" ones (also around the 100.000 miles mark) but commanding prices around 25k euros that are over my budget for my needs and they still are cars of the same age or around it which are not free from the problems that arise from the age (components degrading) even with less use and regular manteinance, so the idea of spending less on a higher milleage car (given it has the most problematic areas like turbos, egrs, etc. solved) and keeping some budget for the problems that may appear is tempting me, considering also that that high milleage will keep its value quite low for the average potential buyer if I ever need to sell, although the investing aspect is not the biggest factor in my decission.

@ I do honestly believe there’s a lot to be said for maintaining the older stuff and stealth costs can be a factor too. I know it’s quite expensive to register cars in France and I’m fairly sure that is on a percentage of its value too so an older/cheaper one will leave more money for fettling on that part alone. I’d suggest you drive the L320 and the L322 before you chose the L322 😀. We have an L319 Discovery 4 which is utterly excellent and my wife adores it but the L322 is next level for the drivability. Also, if you want the most reliable version, I don’t think you’ll want the 3.0 TDV6/SDV6. They are well documented for snapping their cranks and I personally know someone who went through it with hers which was shortly thereafter written off in a non fault head on collision, she bought another D4 and that snapped its crank a few months later. So far, we’ve been lucky with ours but when (not if) it breaks it will get a remanufactured engine put in as my wife like she’s the car so much she won’t consider parting with it. For me, it’s TDV8 all the way but it’s not an option in the Discovery but weirdly is available in the RRS. I’d consider a 3.6 RRS but it won’t drive as well as a full fat. Let us know how you get on if you do decide to buy one.
@i.p.g8428
@i.p.g8428 Ай бұрын
@@FatNFurious Thanks again for your suggestions. I also believe TDV8 should be the way to go for me. L320 RRS are a more common sight around here and there is much more to choose on those at more affordable prices, altough maybe the smartest choice for one of those would be the supercharged petrol engine, especially considering I wouldn't be doing that many miles on the car. I am aware of the engine problems on the 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 (in fact many of them are advertised with having replacement engines) and that is why I lean to the TDV8. As the car looks I do aesthetically prefer the L322 over the L320. The BMW 177 bhp engines I don't consider as i find them underpowered for the car that is and the price difference against the 8 cilinder engines is not that big to make me consider them. In the end I think it is going to be an L322 TDV8 (either 3.6 or 4.4 like the ones you've owned) if I can find a decent one inside my price range which could be a bit stretched if justified. And by "decent" I mean one with the least hidden costs and neglection possible being open to higher mileages if it's an honest example. I'll share with the channel what do I finally get, until now I have been trying to target the model I'd prefer and now I have to go through the cars advertised and ask for detailed info, check them in person when possible or have them checked for me, etc. Regards.

Just read a comment. Dpf is an issue on 4.4 . 3.6 didn't have dpf . Short journeys with 4.4 dpf light will come on yellow in colour. You can clear it yourself with along run . Light will go off . If goes red . Limp mode . Then a fortune to have it cleaned. DPF DELETE AND STAGE 1 REMAP IS THE ANSWER . BUT IT DIDNT COME FROM ME

My 2008 3.6 has DPF. I used a long drill first, the a hammer and a chisel and now it is open. A computer guy deleted DPF from the software. It all looks original from the outside. EGR is also blocket, and deleted from the software. Use a GOOD protecting mask when hammering out the DPF, that dust is definately not good for your health. Engine now runs very sweet and finds 6th gear quicker than before. 290 000km.

I think the L405 with this engine also has AdBlue... I've also heard it's not as reliable, but anecdotal. A lot of stories you read on the internet seem to be from people who don't know the difference between a fullfat and a Sport, or don't know what engine they have, let alone why it's broken or the exact details of how or why it died.

@@JohnBaxendale ah yes, AdBlue. A friend of ours has that in her Discovery. Got a bill for around £1800 when it crystallised, ruined sensors and had to have tank replaced etc. I’m probably better off with the dearer road tax actually. Totally agree on the internet stories, I just wish people would come back and let everyone know what the resolution was once it’s fixed. As you say though, half the time they ask things like; “my car makes a noise, what is it?” Err, help us to help you please!

3rd option be happy and get the 5.0 supercharger jag engine L320 or L319. It’s thirty but is a tank, a fast tank on the roads. Major faults NONE. Just regular oil changes twice a year or every 10.000 km +- 6000 miles , keeping an eye on the coolant hooses that pass between supercharger and the engine block and changing tensioner belts every 80.000 km or +- 50.000 miles. Watching the fluid levels once a week for precaution and everything will be more than fine. No turbines to change nothing just a fine supercharger injecting life on the engine and roaring miles away on the road faster on 0-60 than any golf or mini cooper sport.

Sadly, you can't mate, it actually went before I could get the video finished. I had it advertised for about 2 months with nothing but dreamers, time wasters and people conducting availability surveys! I got a bit of a low offer from a guy who was up in Yorkshire (I'm in Kent), we had a sensible conversation about it and I told him that if he was willing to travel like that I'd take the offer. Picked him up from the station the following lunch time and he drove off 5-6 hours north. Bit disappointed that I didn't get what I felt it was worth but at the same time, I' glad it's getting used and has gone to an enthusiast. I put a lot of money into it but I'd planned to keep it and I wanted a good one.

No matter how much you try and convince yourself that the 3.6 is the better car, once you’ve bought one, you’ll always wish that you had bought the 4.4. The 4.4 is dropping in value like a stone right now. 18 months ago, you would have paid the same for a 3.6. The turbos on the 4.4 are less prone to failure (not exempt from, but less prone) Turbo failure on the 3.6 will wipe out any saving you made on the purchase price of a 3.6. Unless the very reason that you’re considering an L322 at all is because the 3.6 has dropped into your budget zone, then buy the 4.4. Also though, if that is the case, you might want to think carefully about Range Rover ownership at all. To be fair, if I had a 3.6 for sale, I’d probably say it was the better car as well!

Absolute rubbish... Perhaps your not getting the second sump plug removed when serviced or something. I've got 350 thousand ks on original 3.6 turbos which are fine. Turbochargers last forever if they have good clean oil and allowed to warm up and cool down... You have to do oil changes at 10k ks or less any turbo diesel, there is nothing in the design of a turbo that will not see it last as long as the engine is the car is used and maintained properly
