When I last talked about Range Rovers - over a year ago - I promised you flying cars. Well, we’re getting there, but we’re not there yet. When we left the Range Rover, it had risen from a farm workhorse to a school run fashion accessory. But in the process it had turned into a steady seller that was keeping Land Rover afloat, despite no update for 24 years. So, what happened after that long overdue facelift?

On my 5th Range Rover and loved every one. Can't understand comments about reliability. Apart from servicing and parts, I've had 100% reliability: No.1 (P38) did 154,000 mls, No.2 (P38) did 127,000 mls, No. 3 (L322) did 184,000 mls, no 4 (L322) did 123,000 mls and No. 5 (L405) has done 87,000 mls and is halfway... No.3 was my favourite - BMW V8 running on LPG! Sad to see it go.

I enjoyed watching your video very much. My first Range Rover was a second-hand one in 1974 which I sold very quickly as it only did around 12mpg. I vowed never to buy another but relented in 1988 when I bought a new 2.4 VM diesel. Since then I've had a new 2.5 VM diesel, new 1994 and 1998 diesels, a 2002 L322 diesel and latest one a 2013 L405 diesel which has been the best one to date. It does around 30mpg and I've done over 50k miles so far. It might be my last one as I'm now in my 80s Since 1988 I've never regretted buying a Range Rover and have enjoyed every moment of the driving experience.

Your multi-part history of the Range Rover has been exceptional! I had a Rover/Land Rover parts business in San Diego, California from 1974 to 1986. I got out of that business when I lost total respect for B.L.'s marketing. (A year or so before quitting the Rover business, I approached Chrysler and tried to first get Chrysler to market Land Rover's products in North America; after several months, I changed my tune to having Chrysler buy Land Rover from its then owner, British Aerospace. I was still pushing this in August 1986 when Lee Iacocca wrote to say that Chrysler had given up on buying Land Rover. Mr. Iacocca did not say they were then looking into AMC/Jeep.) It took a few years to realize that Iacocca and Chrysler did the smart thing. Jeep's became better over a period of several years (or more). AMC got the chop---as well it should have. Watching your videos would push me into looking into the purchase of a new Range Rover or possibly the latest generation Defender, if it weren't for the fact that I moved from where I was living in Utah to the small island of Molokai in Hawaii in March 2019. Every one of your videos I've seen on KZbin has been fabulous. You always do your homework! I very much appreciate your knowledge of the vehicles and corporations you "lecture" us on. This one's up there with the 911, Capri and Interceptor. I went in one in 1970, brand new, must've been one of the first one's off the line. It belonged to an Uncle who ran a hotel in Torquay. Faulty took me and my Dad out in it to get some eggs from a farm in Dartmoor, it was beige of course. Showing it off, he drove up onto a grass verge at one point. When we reached the entrance to the farm Faulty let Dad have a go, expecting him to drive up the track. To Faulty's horror, Dad didn't, instead he drove it straight across a ploughed field much to the amusement of the farm hands. The car was plastered in mud.

Jag/Range Rover is/was one of those car makers that I was curious about regarding their future in a post-real-Top-Gear world. Like them or hate them, but those three guys did more for the wider knowledge/interest in of British* car makers that anything/anyone else. It’s good to know that such an iconic brand is still going strong and has been one of the few success stories of the British car industry. *regardless of who owns them, some car makers will always be British.

I remember watching a recording of that Top Gear special about British cars which went on and on about the greatness and promise of the British car industry, finishing with a massive, dramatic display of a Union Jack ...then as the end credits began to roll the BBC announcer came on: "And next up, what killed the British auto industry?". Owned a 2011 range rover sport excellent car fast supremely comfortable brilliant off road and luxurious far better built than the x6 I owned previously and far better to drive and it was totally reliable, the problems come when folk buy them third hand and can't afford to service and maintain them even older range rovers are reliable if come with full service history and they still look ace the rolex watch of the car world

JLR Products are not perfect, sure, But im so glad that they are both still around today, Not only that but after test driving them i understand why people live with them, They give so much emotion in driving unlike any other brand, and for most people who dont want to change their car every 3 years, any service costs are worth the little extra you generally pay, If you are in the UK they are not expensive to maintain, just average, meanwhile you will consistently get overcharged on smaller cars, And if you look on the used market the depreciation is high, and thats good if you find a nice one with all the extras and you want to save some cash, Thats how i own a XE S right now.

Ah, the story of my automotive life from 1990 to 2015. You forgot to mention that BMW stripped the company, they stripped out Solihull engineering blocks computer hard drives, kept the mini, as they didn’t know how to build either front wheel drive or 4x4, plus they took the plans for Rovers medium size montego/maestro replacement, the RDX60 which became BMWs 1 series. They only saw JLR as a development place they could poach the British designs

I bought a 2015 Evoque, the transmission broke around 38K miles, thank God it was still under warranty, other wise it would have cost me ~$12K to get it fixed. I do love my Evoque and would buy another Range Rover if I have the $.

Thanks a well produced history of an iconic British marque. I owned 2 Discos, then a Range Rover, then a Sport HSE, but after 20 years with Land Rover, I moved on. I also got given a 1 year old XK8, but never really got round to using it very much, so moved it on. Keep producing these videos, and your other channel.

The only Land Rover I ever owned, for about 4 or 5 years, was a restored road-legal 1952 Series 1 80” in green with a detachable metal roof and detachable door windows. The roof and windows were unrestored. The 2 L petrol engine had a brass tag with Made in Solihull. Unlike later Defenders, it wasn't full-time 4WD, it had the 2WD-4WD lever. What I found amusing was the fuel tank was under the seat. The wipers were hopeless, powered by two windshield-mounted motors similar to old tractors. I sold it to a hunting event company, they wanted it to take guests out shotgun shooting. I got as much as I paid for it and it went to a suitable environment.

My parents used to have a P38 generation 1999 Range Rover Vogue when I was little, with cream leather and black piping around the seats. I still remember to this day going to the former Worksop recycling centre in it not far from the nearby Tesco when I was about 4 or 5 years old, before it closed down in 2007.

I liked the way he explained how BMW and Ford made a difference to the brand but then when Tata took over he started explaining about how the designer made a difference and that Tata's investment was worth it. Give Tata some credit!

He did. Tata bought it and invested millions of dollars. But I think Tata didn't do much control, they let the board of Jaguar Land Rover to have full reign to what they do, because they know better what they are doing. Tata would be just happy to own the two marques to add prestige to their brand.

I'm sure there are many genuine tales of woe about Range Rovers but I can tell you I have had quite a few serious issues with new BMW luxury models. My first RR was a 2012 Westminster 4.4 V8 diesel and from the moment I test drove it I was in love with the brand and I did 100,000 miles in it with only an oil leak and a driver's seat motor spoiling the fun; both were cheaply fixed. I'm now thinking about my third and contemplating the Vogue SE and can't contemplate how I would feel behind the wheel of anything less than this brand.

The reliability was the deal breaker as a breakdown can spell disaster in outback Australia. But, hey, if you want to buy an overpriced piece of crap to feel good about yourself, knock yourself out.

Very satisfying doc. Great stuff as ever. You've covered events involving BMW from around 94 to early 2000s a few times, here, Rover cars, and no doubt one or two BMW models themselves. But might be interesting to cover the story of those 8 or so years from the pov of BMW as a company - Pieschitschreider (sp!!) partly emotional desire to grab Rover in general, not just LR, with ideas to revive old brands like Riley through to the dramatic breakup..

Always liked Range Rovers but put off by their scores in reliability surveys. The new cars look really well put together though! Also this is a great video, always like the care you put into them. I never knew they had so many owners and great to see the brand survive and thrive

Thanks! I'm sure I'll get to a BMW at some point. I thought of the 6-series, as it's one of those cars that doesn't get the love of the mainstream models. Maybe sometime.

Great video as always, but just a small correction - the Range Rover first became a hybrid in late 2014 early 2015 twinned with the 3.0 diesel, it was only when facelifted that it changed to the 2.0 petrol. Land Rover have also very recently announced a plug in hybrid Evoque which uses a 1.5 litre Ingenium petrol.

It would be a huge achievment if they would stop: leaking oil, have air suspension failure, diffgear problems, refuse to start (untill a mechanic is around), have electrical windows that don’t work(for a week or two), gear box breaking down, door handles that won’t come out,.... Shall i go on?
