Thanks Lisa, for this brilliant long range view of what looks like a cruiser going out of the channel and getting beached then needing the Ranger to tow them back into deeper water. I hope that you are well. Take care and all the best. Stevie

Thank you Stevie, I wonder if they’ve made the return journey back across Breydon yet ?

Despite you probably being miles away you still managed to capture some good footage for us to watch. It is reassuring the Rangers were able to offer their assistance and get the cruiser on its way and everyone was safe too.

Thank you SW . There were 3 things that happened that day . The tractor fire which I’ve posted elsewhere and the air ambulance which is in Friday’s video. Luckily I go out filming with others so we all see what happens…… although they all saw the Osprey over Breydon Water but I didn’t.

Well the rangers certainly love a jolly ! what a waste of time they are ! In days gone by the boat station rescue boat would have dropped an anchor in the channel rowed across with a line and waited for the tide and winched them off ! surprised the life boat and air sea rescue was not called out as well ! What a pantomime !

remember those markings only have about a foot or so sticking out at high water - but we don't know how long they waited for SOB to arrive! All's well... and all that though....

it was certainly a strange situation , i kept seeing the ranger go one way but the boat go another , & i thought they were going to get stuck again , i'm just wondering if they'd done something to the rudder with going so far away from the green posts , great catch by the way lol .

Thank you Lori. I doubt we will ever know what the problem was. That doesn’t matter though, I’m always just happy to simply share what I see while I’m out.

I’ve really no idea but when I’m out, I’m out all day and you have to be out to see things. I went there to film 12 spoonbills but came back with a boat rescue instead. I’m with friends when I’m out too.

@@lovelifeloveboat you have to go out to see things and when I’m out filming, I’m out all day. I’m always out filming with friends. On Sunday there was this boat rescue, an Osprey, the air ambulance yet again and a tractor fire along the Acle straight. I only go out once a week like this all day filming. Imagine if I was out every day. Bird watchers go out every day to spot rarities arriving and spot lots, it’s just exactly the same thing I do, except I’m not out every day. The rest of the week I’m editing the videos and working. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed so get outside today and do what ever makes you happy I say. 📸🛥️⛵️

@@NewnameSameme And that is why we love your videos - actually in my real life job I am probably on the other end of your lens - no I don't have wings, but if the air ambulance is around, I am probably not far away!! PS if you were out every day, I would be glued to YT - keep up the great work!!

@@lovelifeloveboat well, you’ll see I only ever film the helicopter, never ever the patient or anyone closely connected. It’s about showing how lucky we are to have an air ambulance and how often it’s out here, there any everywhere. Fridays video will show it approaching from a distance way over Breydon Water and circling right above me, before they decide to land elsewhere. 🚁 🚑 🙌

Looking at the channel markers, it looks to be very low water - we know there has been insufficient dredging of Breydon and we have just come off a really quite big spring tide and so the low tide level may be below that expected - cannot rule out that the boat may have grounded unintentionally, but that is purely a supposition and only those onboard and the yard will actually know!

Interesting, a few thoughts having observed the events in the video: 1. Nobody on board the casualty vessel appeared to be wearing PFD. 2. Ranger boat seemed to execute a tow using a single cleat on the casualty vessel without the use of a bridle to spread the load unto multiple cleats. People have been killed in the past by flying cleats torn from vessels when tension on tow line became excessive. Dangerous risk towing approach. 3. Running aground on soft mud on a rising tide is easy to self escape from as the vessel will float off with the rising tide and can return to the channel if no stern gear damages. This single engine tubberware craft have a keel and a skeg to protect prop and rudder from groundings so should have been operable.. 4. RNLI would have put a crew member on board the casualty vessel to co-ordinate the tow and communicate steering under tow, and especially the timing of releasing the tow line (ie to avoid rescue or casualty vessel fouling props, or tow line crushing crew on either vessel). 5. Hire boat appeared to have a weight rather than a proper anchor on the end of the anchor line.

Thank you for your detailed message. I’m sure others will read it and give you their thoughts. I simply film what happens in front of me. I know nothing about boat rescues, nor boating in general. Thank you though.

As a former RNLI crewman, I can say that yes, where it is safe and possible to do so, putting someone aboard the casualty vessel is preferable. However, in this case it was clearly neither safe or possible due to how close the boats could get to each other due to depth of water. Also, the Ranger vessel is only manned by two people in the first place so placing one of them on the casualty vessel is simply not an option in this case. With regards to the casualty getting themselves out of the predicament, you need to remember that this was a hire craft and as such, what may be simple common sense to an experienced boater, could be far from easy to an anxious novice, even on a flooding tide. Also, hire boats are notorious for having too few cleats for easy towing and on top of that, asking someone who is far from experienced to attach a bridal might not be the easiest thing to do. So while you are right in that a bridal set up would be preferable, given that the boat had enough water under it to float and the tide was flooding, the strain being placed on the tow line was clearly assessed to be acceptable and safe by the professionals involved. Finally, everyone onboard WAS wearing life jackets. Oh, and regarding the mud weight, these hire craft are designed to be used on inland rivers and waterways, and by hirers of varying levels of experience, so a weight is absolutely the appropriate equipment for the environment and vessel type. Yes, Breydon Water is an estuary where an anchor would be preferable, but hire craft are not expected to be anchoring there unless in an emergency in which case the weights (there are usually two onboard) will suffice. It’s easy to be an armchair expert but unless you are there, it’s not always as easy to make an accurate assessment.

ref. 5 the mud anchor is standard fitting on all Broads cruisers, as the Broads have muddy bottoms and shallow depth, no room for the 5x depth lay of a fluke anchor. The alternative is a Rond anchor, a single hook to stamp into trhe soft ground of the bank, the rond.

I have just crossed Braydon water twice last week and have no idea how you get stuck, tides are well published and known and even during a windy week it was fine for us.
