Pretty good. Consider upgrading the mylar blanket to a Heatsheet(bigger, stronger, and quieter). I prefer an empty McCann's Irish Oatmeal can. Its a little smaller but has a steel lid. For emergency food, add a couple of packets of instant oatmeal and a plastic spoon. You can prepare and eat the oatmeal in their packets. I prefer tealight candles, atleast 3. When used with 3 - 2" roofing nails they can heat the can with some water in it. In a hypothermia situation, the candles can be put in the lid and lit. You can sit over the candles and wrap yourself with the heatsheet. It's surprising how fast this can warm you up. This is a modification of the old hot poncho trick from Ft Benning when I was there in 1974.

This is a really good start.....and a great way to start a discussion. ;) In the hard choices of emergency preparation, this kit is heavy on fire, and light on water. I would leave out the ferro rod, the lens, and the candle. In that space, I would add 2-4 bits of tinder (fat wood, or impregnated cotton pads, etc), and as many water purification tables as will fit. If you could have enough water tablets to ONLY rely on those for water for 3 or 4 days, that would be ideal. A second zip top water bag would be good insurance against a hole or split. The snare wire and fishing kit are small enough, but generally unneeded in a 72-ish hour scenario. The bandana is not needed, and should be part of your clothing. I would leave all this out. In that space, I would add a second drum liner. I would also add 16-24 8" zip ties. Zip ties are AWESOME for building a framework for shelter with minimal effort. Zip ties are stronger than most lashings, and can be "tied" with a single hand (with a bit of fiddling), in case of injury. The saw on the multi-tool is capable enough to cut down 8-10 "thumb thick" poles to build a framework for a shelter. Mylar blankets are REALLY fragile in the wind. Having some reinforcement with a frame makes them MUCH more likely to last for 2 or 3 days. Adding some flat pack duct tape is another GREAT option for quick shelters. This makes very effective "corner reinforcement" for the drum liners and space blanket. I would actually stage the drum liners with those corner reinforcements NOW, when you are dry, and warm, and have good light to do it.

I like the fact that you exercise your equipment items and not only tell but show. I've done several coffee can survival kits. Fairly cheap and easy to put together. I like putting the 550 cord on the outside by wrapping it around the can. Get more line that way. Another thing I did is with the fishing set up. I took a wine cork and hollowed out all around the length of it then attached the line, sinker and hook to it. The cork acts as a bobber. Also strung a pearl to the line near the hook. Kind of looks like an egg sack that attracts a hungry fish.

If you take another can the same size and remove the bottom with a can opener, you can put it on top of the survival can for a lid under the plastic cover. It can be used as a back up cutting device. Poke a hole in it put cotton or punk wood in the can, cover with lid and it turns into a char cloth burner.

I store a similar can in my car inside a larger 20 oz coffee can with holes along top scaled end so I can use as stove. As well as storing extra food like instant oatmeal, coffee, high energy snacks, etc Each one of these also stormed inside a 3 gal bucket with lid that lets you store more items, and just need to grab bucket handle a go.

I took a wilderness survival class at the University of Utah back in 1996. We assembled and learned how to use a similar kit, however, the version in this video seems way more comprehensive than the one we built in a university level class. Professional design and execution, this is a really good kit to have in the trunk of your car. Andrew leads the way!

I just remembered that in that class we added a large piece of plastic wrapped around the outside of the tin and secured with bailing wire. It was used to build the Mors Kochanski super shelter. I saw you did that in that hunting video. Overnight in single digits, proves it works. Thanks for testing it out!

For every survival kit: I also recommend having on the outside, (or easily accessible inside), a list of shelf life items with their expiration date. Also, many survival kits do not have a one-a-day vitamin with minerals in it included. A vitamin takes up very little space and is very light versus the benefits that one can obtain from it.

The old bouillon cubes in kits was a crude form of providing a salt replacement. But we now have oral rehydration salts, which I would place at a higher priority than vitamin, particularly in hotter climates where you are sweating a lot. Lack of a vitamin pill for the length of time you expect to survive with a survival kit isn't going to make a bit of difference, assuming your healthy and vitamin levels were good to begin with.

The salt tablets mentioned by 'RenThraysk' above is also a good idea, depending upon the survival situation. The basic concept though is that they are small and lightweight for the benefits received, and hence a 'good' value. Individually packaged, with shelf life expiration dates on the package. Of course, could also have a survival tip on the outside of the package too to help engage the brain in survival mode.

This brings back memories from the late 70's and early 80's when these were popular, but no one heard of the 7 C's or anything like that. Kits were all over the place with most having the cans filled with a bag of rice and a bag of oatmeal, matches, a coat hanger to hang the pot, the pot had two holes drilled in it for boiling water and cooking food, sugar, bouillon cubes, a spoon, and a few condoms for carrying water. I think I had a small cheap Japanese made pocket knife too. Back then Japan was our today's China. It's fun to see how much kits have changed and for the better for sure. Keep up the great work.

Awesome coffee can survival kit man! Gonna put one together for my car and truck! I’ll be using your example as a template...! I realize room in the can is limited, however, it seems to me the kit is very light on first aid gear. I think a small “boo boo” kit could be made to fit in the can. An example would be : 1 large tough strip bandaid, 2-4 tough strip regular bandaids, 1 3”x 3 1/4” steri-strip pack, 1 2x2” gauze pad, 1 small moleskin pad, 2 alcohol pads and 1 betadine (iodine) pad, 1 small triple antibiotic packet, 1 small 1% hydrocortisone packet and a small medication packet of personal and otc meds like Benadryl, Motrin, lmodium, Tylenol, etc. I would pack a minimum of 1 dose of each medication. I think with a little re-arranging, this small FAK would fit with your parameters and criteria intact. Thanks again for your awesome channel! I look forward to future videos!

Add to that : toilet wipes Tablets, they are compressed and expand when you put some drops of water on top of them. They sell on amazon. You can fit few tablets in that can along with all that other stuff. You can also put few condoms there, they can be used as water containers or for medical purposes if you get injured to prevent infections.Also add a tampon, helpful to filter water and to start a fire.

In the SAS Survival Guide it recommends special forces use tobacco tin sized kits. Regular Squddies something about three times the size and civilians something about the size of a canteen pouch. This is great, a decent size and well thought through.

Great video. Thanks. I've been building kits for years and giving them away. FYI... You aren't going to carry a can around with you. A haversack is a great option, even if you are wearing a knapsack or backpack. I keep my fire kit needs and aluminum foil in a canteen cup with instant coffee packets, granola bars, instant rice (in separate pouch) and beef jerkey. Beef w/rice for dinner & granola bar & coffee for b'fast. I also carry dental floss, swiss army knife (has scissors), and several other small items. With a haversack or pack you will have the room. A hip pack is great for small, easily accessable items as well.Your coffee can kit is great. You can also use the bottom of the can as a signaling device. Great, short video with good advice.

Another great video, might I suggest that you put a couple of holes in the top inner ring of you coffee can. This would make attaching a wire handle more easy and wouldn’t effect the waterproofing. Keep up the great work.

Very nice kit. I would wrap the outside of the can with 550 para-cord along its entire length, tied with a series of half-hitches. I would also make a small cloth possible bag with a shoulder strap and a tie down flap to secure the can within it. Internal pocket to hold four (4), 4"x4" gause pads and at least a folded sheet of aluminum foil for cooking. You need to keep your hands free and the can needs to be attached to you. To the can itself add one (1) felt tip pen to write messages on surveyors tape and three (3) packets of antibacterial ointment. Again, project well done. Thank you.

My coffee cans kit is mostly stove. I take an old three pound coffee can and punch air holes along top and bottom. That is the stove portion and can burn alcohol, sticks, charcoal, buddy burners but mostly use denatured alcohol. Pound size (now 10-12oz) can w coat hanger bail fits inside. Inside that is 2 cheap steel tent stakes for suspending coffee can in the larger one. Also put a green cup, lighter, matches, vaseline cotton balls, bandana, tea bags, buillon, spork, empty vienna sausage can (burner), most inside a freezer baggie. Sometimes it has oatmeal also. Finally I use aluminum foil to fry eggs with the big can inverted. Good luck w coffee can kits. There is no end to the possibilities.

Food for thought: Several commenters have previously shared what I was thinking. Drill holes at opposite sides of the can near the top so you may add a wire bail if needed for cooking/boiling water. Yes, it could be done in the field with your Leatherman. My thought was about safety and a "what if?" What if the tool slips when one of our youngsters is performing this task? Not a good thing to start a training with a "blow-out patch" on a young hand. We elected to pre-drill small holes and cover with tape to prevent water intrusion into a similar kit we made in the past. Thank you for the great up-grade ideas for our kits presented here.

Those are great items to add! One thing I like about having a small pencil and paper or even some sort of writing stick and paper is the ability, not only to leave messages, but to also draw a sun compass on the paper and track distance and direction for land navigation. If all I had was distance and direction of points traveled the paper or even sticks in the ground could recreate the route and be used to find the starting point to potentially get out of being lost!

Hmmm.. if only there was some way of attaching two straps to either side of the can.. then you could carry that coffee can on your back, keeping it handy in case of survival emergencies. Additional bonus to this strategy: if there are others close by who are also in duress, they could see your back-carry coffee can and realize, "Hey, that person has a coffee can. Maybe it's full of stuff that'll keep us all alive!" At least until the van shows up. 😉 I suppose now we'll have to paint the can orange. P.S. love the channel.

Idea I had yesterday, following someone else's old blazes until I ran into survey markers. And of course, everyone has ORANGE tape. So... Idea is, EDC sharpie, maybe a mini in the kit for back up. Put the date (and time if possible) and your last name or initials on the tape? And if a real survival situation LOST or SOS on it? Also, this is much like my usual kit, but I found some old, three piece rectangular French mess kits years ago. Let out the middle piece, and you've got pot and a bowl that you can leave stuff in or use as a pot. And when stuffed in ziplock than a beanie, same size as six NATO mags- lots of pouches there.

This is a good kit. Something I add to kits like this is birthday candles and for signaling, sparklers. Sparklers are cheap and weigh little but are bright at night. I don't count them as fire starters as you need significant fire to ignite them but results may very.

I would suggest if you can't find a metal coffee can to go to your home improvement store and buy an empty paint can and the opener. You can attach the opener to the handle via key ring. Still small enough to carry, maybe not with one hand like the one shown but still a can. Great video! I'm going to build one and keep in my truck's toolbox. Thank you!

The quart paint can would also be my preference -- the lid seals and is water tight. BUT.....all the options at my local home improvement megamarts have a coating. That coating will need to be removed (burned off) BEFORE using it in a fire to boil water or cook anything. Also, adding a handle or bail is tricky with a paint can while keeping it watertight.

I'm digging this kit, I am going to make up 3 of them. One for me, one for mom, and one for my dad. Keep on the vehicles and maybe even give some out for christmas this year because who doesn't need a survival kit lol you might even keep a small battery power bank like the pen style in there for emergency charging of your phone or headlamp if it is rechargeable. Also maybe a couple cotton balls in there in case your lighter malfunctions, then you can sprinkle some ash on the unrolled cotton ball then roll it tightly to rub between 2 pieces of wood to create an ember through friction and be able to blow it to life in case of last resort reasons.

Excellent kit! My only minor quibble would be the coffee can. Yeah, I get that it's "a thing" but since you have a good $150-$200 worth of gear in there you might as well spring for the extra $10-$15 to get a real cook pot. You can get a Stansport or MSR 1 liter to 1.9 liter pot for $20 or less that will have a proper handle that folds down over the lid. It won't rust out like a coffee can or leak at the seams (it has no seams). I'd rather have a real pot than cook in a reused can. Still, I like the kit!

Built a walking kit that is somewhat similar using a MOLLE water bottle case that has a side pocket. Liter Water Bottle nested in Walmart Stainless Cup, Neck Knife, First Aid, Fire x 3, Space Blankey, Flashlight & Snack Ziploc.

I enjoy these types of problem solving projects, will give it a try., thanks for the video and taking the time to share. My two cents are, a buck saw blade rolled up wouldnt take up anymore room, and put wax from the candle on the threads of the orange pill bottle for better seal. Once store bought pill bottles are opened they no longer have a good seal, that orange bottle is the way to go made better with wax thread seal, and with label of content taped to outside.

Great idea using the coffee can, but I'm going to add a couple more items. Home Depot sells empty metal paint cans that this kit will fit inside of. I'm going to "nest" the coffee can inside of that for the purpose of making a small still for desalination of seawater. As I live in coastal SW Florida I'm surrounded by salt water. By adding a piece of copper tubing with a compression connector to screw in fitting, I can attach the tube to the lid of the bigger can, fill with seawater and boil. The steam collects in the tube and cools, dripping into the coffee can. Fresh, clean water. Put a small amount of salt water in that for taste and necessary minerals and I have enough water for a lifetime. Any more room in the cans will be used for more fishing gear and various other items, super glue being one. Use it on larger wounds to close. Thought I would share this idea for anyone else in an area similar to mine. The paint can could also be turned into a rocket stove if not needed for making a still. Stay sharp, stay strapped, stay alive.

Awesome kit! I would try to replace that cheap Mylar with something more robust. Have you thought about doing one of those water bottle kits with a large steel Nalgene or similar bottle?

Love the Petzl E+Lite’s! I carry one as a back up to other lights. You should add an extra battery or 2 for the light. Very small, Lite, Compact. It takes up almost no room in the kit.

Same here! Besides a button LED light the Petzel is my go to for small urban kits as well!

I use a peanut butter jar....but I see the benefits of the coffee can more. Love the idea. I think throwing that can down in a red drawstring stuff sack (3 pack at Walmart for $5) would be a good idea also.... Just as a carrying device / bright color / and an extra sack for food gathering or fitting the contents loose in it....then using the freezer bag for possible water carry.
