Composer Papanasam Sivan's class slection of he meditative ragam, Sama, to compose a krithi while it is supposed to give mental equipoise and is known to be soothing to the nerves when seek refuge on Lord Narayana! The raga Sama is usually presented at a gentle pace without much fanfare and shorn of embellishments such as 'gamakam'. Beauty of the raga will be visible just by use of long pauses and appropriate turn of phrases that allow listeners to easily experience the essence of this melody. Sama can be seen different from Arabhi and Devagandhari by the fact that it doesn't have Nishada. It differs from Shuddha Saveri vis-a-vis the 'gandhara'. Popular songs in Sama , apart from this- 'Narayana Nalinayatha lochana' are.... 'Annapurna Vishalakshi' (Dikshithar), 'Santamu lekha' (Tyagaraja) n 'Manasa Sancharare' (Sadashiva Brahmendra). Here Ra=Ga sisters did sing the requisite eloquence exquisitely with down to earth style of pious singing as entailed by the ragam! Their rendition is soulful too. Good concert. Best wishes!

Short & Sweet. The inherent beauty of Saamaa, as we perceive, is its slow paced tempo allows the vocalists to savour the Raagaa's distinct elegance in a relaxed way though such slow paced Raagaas also demand a deeper breath control, thus making the singing exercise a bit strenuous. Not an easy task.
